Immortal Technique is sponsoring a writing contest for high school students in conjunction with his Green Lantern-backed project The 3rd World. "The 3rd World Writing Contest" calls for students to write about their perception of the United States' relations to Third World countries. "Sometimes during the solace of a revolutionary life and the great responsibility of working with community organizations, gangs, prisoners, parolees, soldiers, and youth in general, I write all that I see," Technique said in a statement. "I write constantly. That is how [this contest] came around, in the middle of working on The Middle Passage and Revolutionary Vol. 3. I couldn't help but script the way I saw the world." The 500-750 word essays will be judged by the outspoken rapper and the winner will receive upwards of $1500; $3,000 total will be given out to the top three winners. The deadline to enter is July 8.
