Riot Breaks Out at dead prez Concert

What started out as a brawl quickly escalated into an all out riot at a performance by dead prez at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wa. on Thursday night (February 14). According to local station KIRO 7, the fight started in the crowd at around 1:30 a.m. and a campus police officer tried to arrest on of the participants. As the female officer tried to remove the person from the venue, she was surrounded concertgoers. As the officer was removing the suspect from the building, dead prez started performing their song “Fuck The Police,” and the crowd became more aggressive. Eventually a large group surrounded the officer’s car and demanded that the person be released. The campus officer then radioed the local Thurston County Police for backup. When they arrived, they helped the female officer out of the car and released the man. But when one of the deputy’s cars would not start, things became violent. The crowd overturned the police car, broke the windows and started throwing rocks at the officers. Additional troopers and a SWAT team eventually dispersed the crowd, but a deputy’s laptop and a radar gun were stolen in the confusion. No further arrests were made.

I was at the show and watched it all go down. Part of me thought it was cool, but you gotta pick your battles. The cops didn’t actually do anything that fucked up, (well I guess pepper spray) and now the community is pissed off at Evergreen. Its funny cuz it wasn’t even the hiphop heads doing this, it was the anarchist punk kids.

    • PURLE HAZE

Yo ain’t no mutha fucker from evergreen go to that concert. That was all those fools from down south who started that shit.

i bet dead prez would tell you they support riots. because they are faggots. why would they play fuck the police at that moment? hopefully they go to jail for inciting a riot.

  • jay

I was at the show, and for the record, dead prez didnt incite a riot, they said we need to be organized, get the officer’s badge number, and support the guy who got arrested.

  • R-Mont

I was there, it was fuckin moving. Fuck the cops and them busting on a movement

  • Real Talk

Wow, I thought Dead Prez couldnt get any lower. Didn’t they take a photo with the murdering, oppressive communist dictator Fidel Castro?…. maybe that was Aaron McGruder actually (the author creator of the BoonDocks). I think Dead Prez just shouted Castro out or something, but they pretty much preach the same rhetoric. Mumia, MOVE, we got a lot of looney toons like that in Philly. I kind of just lump all these extreme communist leftist with distorted world views together, my bad. Well I can’t really blame people like them for being who there are and believing what they do considering the history of racism, slavery, and genocide by this country and in this world by European peoples against others. But that doesn’t mean Dead Prez aint crazy wackos, cuz they is.

So there is a fight in the crowd and the police woman is just doing her job and removing who ever was bein rowdy. Happens all the time in clubs and shit. But this time was different…. It must have been some world wide racist conspiracy this time, cuz Dead Prez wit their looney toon asses started singin F* the Police and inciting the crowd! Ummmmm…. yeah, that’s a little psycho if you ask me. College kids I be around are kind of that way too. Retarded as hell. Like the ones up in NYC that was cheering the President of Iran (Ahmadenijad). I just don’t get that.

I like Dead Prez’s music when they speak about the history of things (some of which is true and relevant) but when they talk this revolutionary overthrow the government shit, it’s just kind of…… coo-coo. Public Enemy they are NOT. Politically and emotionally, there music is not empowering like PE was it is not cartoonishly outragously gangsta like NWA was. Dead Prez is just plain fucking crazy.

    • http://castro E-dog

Fuck you pig! Get on the right side of the revolution. This was a poorly organized event. The pig went in with no back-up one female pig in a crowd of 6-800. Cant condone the rioting cause I dont think itl help the cause but fuck a pig anywayz. The weak ass event security crackas couldnt handle one small incident and called in the ONLY campus pig on duty. This riot was funny as hell though. Even after the pigs caved in and let dude go, the crackers were so pissed that they got maced that they got crazy. White girls gone wild.

i was at that concert last night. stic told us that someone was being arrested, then told people to get arresting officer’s badge # and other information in case anything bad happened. they rocked “fuck the law” from get free mixtape, and then 2 more songs to end it. as i was going out, there were about 30-40 people around the cop car, and 4 more cruisers a way off.
people were sitting in front of/laying in front of the cruiser with the arrested person, and cops started dragging people by their hair and “restraining” them with batons, thats when the shit really jumped off.
i wouldnt say it was dead prez “inciting” a riot, but a combination of protest and police overreaction that lead to it. it would have happened under the same circumstances if dead prez wasnt there, same shit happened when the army brought shit from the port here to fort lewis, except the police won that round.

I go to evergreen. I wasn’t at the show, but people I know were. The story I heard was more interesting than just some kids having fun. The rumor I have heard is that it was all a racially motivated thing. After the fight, the cops arrested a black kid. Apparently he wasn’t the one that started the fight, and the kid that did throw the first punch was white and attested to that… Any greeners know?

  • http://myspace.com/wyking Wyking

Dead Prez didn’t incite that situation. I was on stage with DPz and the video footage shows and proves that. Here is an eyewitness account from someone closer to the melee…

    Peace all,

On February 14th, 2008, Dead Prez with Umi, Sis Hailstorm, Alpha-P, DJ B-Girl, Project Mayhem, and two other DJs from Olympia (sorry, I can’t remember their names) performed at Evergreen State College in Olympia.

During Dead Prez’s set, Olympia Police came in to the venue and arrested a black male, who was being accused by a white male of punching him and his girlfriend during a fight outside the venue approx. 30 minutes earlier. I didn’t see the fight, I just heard about it. I was told by another student that the white male started it.

Except for this incident, the actual show was completely peaceful!
Everybody who took the stage was dope. Slap yourself right now if you missed it. ;)

The local media, specifically [FOX affiliate] KCPQ-13, and [Cox Television affiliate ] KIRO-7 has been claiming on television that Dead Prez told the crowd, in essense, to attack the police. THIS IS A LIE and A MAJOR DISTORTION! If you follow the link, you’ll see that KIRO-TV in particular couldn’t even get the group’s name correct, let alone give complete and accurate details of what really happened.

M1 of Dead Prez specifically told the crowd, who were already shouting “cops are in the building” and “fuck the police” on their own, to “make sure the brotha was safe” and to “handle the situation responsibly”. They then went back to doing their set.

Once the police got the black male outside and into the car, the mostly white crowd of Evergreen students started chanting, “let him go!” and surrounded the car. They also shouted slogans denouncing capitalism and white supremacy.

As more police arrived, more students started surrounding the car. I estimate the number at about 400, plus many onlookers; including alot of people with cameras. The police pepper sprayed a few people, myself included, and then tried to penetrate the ring of people around the police car. When they did that, people in the crowd started throwing rocks, garbage cans, etc. Then, a small group in masks ( I was told they were anarchists) bum rushed the car and opened the back door where the black male was seated in handcuffs.

The police stopped the rush, and then announced they were leaving. Then more students surrounded the car, shouting “when he is free, you can leave!”.

According to a witness near me ( I couldn’t see so well, due to pepper spray in my eyes and more people joining the crowd near the car) the police opened the door, uncuffed the black male, and he walked away!

The police then started a hasty retreat. One officer and his car got separated from the group and he was pelted with objects until he ran over with his fellow officers. The crowd scooted the car away from the wall and then turned it over. The gas tank was punctured and the computer was taken out of it. Calls went out to open the trunk and take their weapons, but no one did.

After the police left, some in the crowd started taking the car apart, while others tried to set it on fire. Olympia police returned and everybody started leaving and the police deployed more pepper spray.

    End note:
Before people outside of Seattle and the hip-hop scene start thinking this was just a bunch of ‘drunk college kids’ or ‘outside agitators’, keep in mind that at the tail end of last year, Evergreen students laid their bodies on the line in an attempt to stop shipments of war materials (like Armored Personel Carriers and Tanks) coming back from Iraq at the Port of Olympia, in an effort to do something direct and tangible to stop the war (as they saw it).

At that time, police were accused of using excessive force, and the fall out from all of that hasn’t really resolved itself yet; so many people are still very angry; I was told this by more than a few different people present last night. Someone else suggested that the students were attempting to assert community control over the police using direct action.

Hopefully, a positive resolution can come from all of this that everybody can be at peace with.

    Greg

deadprez didnt do one damn thing wrong,

they lost their show tonight because of insurance issues because of the risk of a riot.

none of us wanted that shit, and we will be putting together some footage to show it, they should never not be able to get on a show because they might insight a riot, my fellow evergreen students just fucking suck.

  • Chaka

    Real Talk,
I totally agree with all what you said.Dead prez are extremists in the way they handle racial and political issues. In this case a representative of the federal police(the female officer)was just doing her job and that actually was the wrong time to start screaming fuck the police. In the place where I stay in Africa, the majority of people dont like the police because of all the bad things they do(i.e a stat just came out that in the past 8yrs the police has killed over 8000 innocent citizens in my country)but we still have the sense to think that without the police or an authority of that sort they would be major disorders or chaos in our societies. And from the way some of you spoke, you seem to think there is glory in senseless voilence.I bet non of you have seen a real war or have been caught up in a real war situation.Believe me when i tell you this,I have been caught up in an ethnic clash where I saw humans like me getting chopped up by their fellow humans with cutlasses(matchets)into pieces.I have seen new born babies getting stoned to the wall with thier brains staining the wall.I have seen people getting lynched, after which car tires are thrown on their necks and burnt.Other Africans too in places like Liberia,Serria Lone,Sudan,Rwanda,Angola and more recently Kenya will tell you a similar story.I say this not to frighten you but to tell y’all that we that have experienced such violence dont want to experience them again. So when we see people glorifying violence we look at them like stupid and ignorant fools.Peace an hip hop head in Africa wrote this.

I will express my views on the matter after analyzing the KIRO 7 report using quotes and responses.

“As the officer was removing the suspect from the building, dead prez started performing their song “Fuck The Police,” and the crowd became more aggressive.”

That is a lie. I was at the concert, and the riot happened AFTER the concert was done by at least 30 minutes. Looks like KIRO 7 twisted yet another story.

“Eventually a large group surrounded the officer’s car and demanded that the person be released. The campus officer then radioed the local Thurston County Police for backup. When they arrived, they helped the female officer out of the car and released the man.”

    True.

“But when one of the deputy’s cars would not start, things became violent. The crowd overturned the police car, broke the windows and started throwing rocks at the officers.”

No. Things got violent before the car wouldn’t start. It’s the violence that caused the car from not starting in the first place. At least get the story right.

“Additional troopers and a SWAT team eventually dispersed the crowd,”

NO WAY. Pure lies. I was definitely there for volunteer clean up and monitoring the aftermath. The police clearly left and did NOT come back until about an hour after the car was flipped. Swat did not “disperse” the crowd. What they did do was bring in their mini-bus after the mob was long gone and only photographers and volunteer clean up people were left. The police then blocked off the small road and proceeded to tow the damaged car away. There were about 10-15 people left. After the police and Swat left, me and others went to clean up the garbage, glass, and metal scraps.

“but a deputy’s laptop and a radar gun were stolen in the confusion. No further arrests were made.”

True. But whoever took the laptop is one dumb fool. Too bad for him/her, those laptops have GPS tracking because they are usually in police vehicles. It should only be a matter of time. Plus they have fingerprints and blood all over the sheriff’s cruiser.

    Now for how I feel:

First off, I was not involved in the violence against the police or vehicle, I was there to support Dead Prez and colored folk. But more importantly, I will say that in now way did DEAD PREZ advocate or rapped in favor of those idiotic actions. Their song “Fuck the Police” is in response to the real life threat of pigs on poor neighborhoods not a college campus. This is formally known as the Police State and the power they have over minority communities all across America.

But in no way were the events surrounding the angry mob, acts of Police Brutality. From what I have been hearing on campus, they arrested a man who hit his girlfriend publicly.
That looks like justice to me; get that womanizer off my campus.

This riot was clearly the act of anarchists (as someone stated before) who took advantage of the situation and didn’t think about the consequences which by the way, caused Dead Prez to cancel their following shows, cause 30,000 dollars of damage to the Police Dept. (which by the way will come out of the people’s pockets through taxes which fund the Police Dept.), and on top of that, probably no more hip hop concerts at Evergreen State College, and possible video surveillance around the entire campus (due to the excessive graffiti this school year). Then of course they left their sign A with and O on a nearby building.

I worry about Dead Prez’s reputation, but only because KIRO 7 and other local news stations twisted the story to make it seem that Dead Prez supports that Un-Revolutionary event. If one would only listen to what they say and look at what they do in their communities, you would know right away that they don’t support corny college riots, but rather organized committed change.

I would also like to respond to the comment saying that Dead Prez are “extremists”.
    Hold up.
    Hold up.

    Are you Serious?

Who are the extremists? Dead Prez, who currently fight the system, continuing the legacy of black leaders like Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, and Huey Newton.

    Or…

The ones who raped Africa, stole her people and resources through colonialism, then continued to rape her people in America through slavery making unimaginable profits, then continuing to rap her people though economic slavery still to this day making disgusting profits.

You need to rethink what “extremism” is. On average, Blacks have an earning ratio of 56 cents to every dollar earned by Whites. The average Black net worth is 14 times less than that of Whites.

I don’t lie. Those aren’t even opinions. Those are facts. That right there is ECONOMIC SLAVERY. You tell me, who are the extremists? Dead Prez does so much for the Global Black Community, through organizations like the International People’s Democratic Uhuru Movement and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement; they help end oppression and injustice.
For goodness sake, They represent FREEDOM. Buy their album Let’s Get Free, if you don’t already know.

In concluding words, I find it dishonorable and disgraceful to call Dead Prez extremists when history’s greatest extremists still have the world’s wealth and power in their hands.

    Just To Clarify…
As a member of the Olympia Community, participant of the show and witness of the events after the show ended…It is important that all the details are revealed to the public.

The people who were gathered around the police car were holding space in a very peaceful manner. As they chanted ‘Let Him Go’ they stood in a circle, united and strong.

After the man was released, the backup police got out of their cars and in formation proceeded to divide the crowd. The police took the FIRST acts of violence by pepper spraying people point blank.

    VIOLENCE begets more VIOLENCE.

The individuals who reacted by throwing bottles, garbage cans and etc… were making their own choice at that point. It no longer was the united cyfer that had been chanting down the oppressors.

It is true…we are continuing to suffer from many many years of oppression, exploitation, power, control…

we must continue to rise up…above the mindset of the oppressors…

The Power is the People…the People are the Power!!!

    FUCK OPPRESSION!

    @Gam,Malik,RBG-Up,
My brothers you seem not to understand the point I was stressing in my earlier post.In that post I said:”In this case a representative of the federal police(the female officer)was just doing her job and that actually was the wrong time to start screaming fuck the police.”Now it is true like you said Dead Prez’s song “Fuck the Police” is in response to the real life threat of pigs on poor neighborhoods not a college campus. But it is also true that such a song can spark a riot when aired in a situation similar to the Evergreen case. And it did spark a riot in the Evergreen case.My point here is that, the local media may have twisted the story like you claim, but the fact remains that Dead Prez where wrong for singing that song in such situation. The song in one way or the other had an effect in the riot.you also have a problem with a statment in my earlier post that”Dead prez are extremists in the way they handle racial and political issues.”There are many Dead Prez tracks that backs up my claim in that statment. For brevity sake we will here look at the track ‘They schools’ off the let’s get free album. Now what Dead Prez where trying to do on that track was educate we blacks on the fact that in our schools the history lessons on the black race is not all that correct. But the way Dead Prez handled that issue on that track cannot be applauded by blacks who know the value and importance of education. Why?Because Dead Prez took it to the point that they seem to be telling their audience to abandon school altogether and become drop outs. That is way too extreme. Some of us push this anti-white thing to the point that we do not realize that we have become racists and are no different from our former colonial masters. For me Dead Prez are pushing this anti-white thing way too far.Peace an hip hop head in Africa wrote.
