The Ying Yang Twins to Appear on Dr. Phil to Debate Anti-Pants Sagging Campaign

Rappers Kaine and D-Roc of Atlanta based duo the Ying Yang Twins are scheduled to appear on an upcoming episode of the Dr. Phil talk show to debate a recent campaign to put an end to saggy jeans. The pair have been invited onto the show to discuss the issue alongside the founders of the Dallas based Hip-Hop Government organization, Rev. Al Sharpton and Dallas Deputy Pro Tem Mayor Dwaine Caraway. Jay Scroggins, Damon Wofford, and Chris Williams launched Hip-Hop Government in 2005 as a way to get young people within the Hip-Hop culture involved in the political process. In October of 2007, the group launched its “Pull ‘Em Up” campaign against the fashion trend of sagging jeans and exposed boxer shorts. The men believe that the trend is often misinterpreted by people outside of the culture and used to stereotype young people, ultimately hurting their chances of securing employment. Hip-Hop Government eventually erected 17 billboards across the city publicizing the campaign. While their project seems well intentioned, the “Pull ‘Em Up” campaign and similar pushes in other cities have stirred up much controversy. Opponents have called the measures an affront to free speech and another excuse for authorities to racially profile minority youth. “We are excited for the opportunity to address issues that concern our culture,” Williams said of the appearance on Dr. Phil. “Too often, when members of the hip hop community are in the media, it’s for something negative. It feels good to know that we are being invited because we are recognized for our positive contributions to the community.” According to the Ying Yang Twins’ Myspace page, the episode will air on January 28.

    time and money goes into these tv show debates, and with all of the negativity in the world (violence, drugs, sex crimes, etc.), they decide to talk about sagging pants. trust, our generation and the next has way more important things to focus on and fix then whether or not we wear a belt. and i’m tired as hell of sharpton…he does all that preaching, when he’s really exploiting his own people…every day, right in our face.

    and for the record, wear a belt. it takes 10 seconds to put that bitch on, and 10 seconds to take it off. it’ll benefit you in the long run.

    The first comment I have is that we as blacks need a wake up call.We have lost our idenity as a people.Young people you have to educate yourselves. This world is one big chess game and the best players are the one who knows how to play it. You have to realize the game is not made for you its made for them.(If you know what I mean.) You have to beat them at their own game. If not you will never compete. With the issue of sagging. I believe you are a product of what you put out. If you sag maybe your lifestyle sags. Blacks as a whole have to stop showing their trump card. Were too busy keeping it real. While the white people are making millions and millions not telling you how they keep it real. We also have to start listening to their talks shows and stop listening to music allllllll the time. I challenge anyone to start listening to Shawn Hannity and Neil Boortz to see and learn how they view us, this world and everthing else. And see if what you hear will change the way you think about life. Most importantly you have to keep God first in you life and the rest will always fall in place. Peace.

    They tried to start this shit in my city, but there is just no way possible that they can enforce this issue. They had on the news that the laws were gonna hand out tickets to anybody the see sagging. There are other more serious crimes going on in the world than people sagging. Now I dont sag, because I know where the trend comes from (prison) but I dont agree with this.
