David Banner, Cuba Gooding Jr. Set to Star in Upcoming Film About the Juice Crew

Rapper David Banner and Academy Award winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. are set to appear in an upcoming independent film about Marley Marl’s legendary Juice Crew. Called The Vapors, the film will chronicle the rise of the groundbreaking Queens collective that counted MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, Craig G, Tragedy Khadafi, Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, Masta Ace, and Roxanne Shanté as members. According to Blackfilm.com, Banner will play Biz Markie, while Cuba Gooding Jr. will fill the role of pioneering DJ and crew founder Marley Marl. Other cast members include singer/actress Keke Palmer as Roxanne Shanté and The Wire’s Idris Elba as Tyronne Williams a.k.a Fly Ty. Marley founded the Juice Crew in the late 80’s and they went on to release the classic posse cut “The Symphony,” followed by a number of monumental solo records from individual members. MC Shan’s “The Bridge” famously ignited a battle with KRS-One and his Bronx based Boogie Down Productions, and Shanté’s “Roxanne’s Revenge” spawned a seemingly endless string of copycat and response tracks. Big Daddy Kane, Marley and Roxanne Shanté are all executive producing the film in conjunction with Questionmark Entertainment. Director Furqaan Clover is expected to helm the project, and filming is scheduled to begin in January 2008.

Thats a good look for David Banner and Cuba. Also I like this for hip hop because it can show where a lot of this movement we call hip hop originated so a lot of young guys can pay hommage and show respect to those who started our lifestyle. Me being only 21 I know about some of the legnds but I don’t know all that I need to know when it comes to details. I will make sure I check this out the day it comes out.

  • Big daddy

This is a good move for hip hop, but they should get some younger actors to play the roles not these old fools

First and foremst, this is the blueprint as to all hip hop crews are made, that is the first thing, Bad Boy, DEATHROW, RAP A LOT, they all got the real blueprint from Marley Marl, I KNOW you are going to say Rush but Run DMC never signed to Def Jam or Kurtis Blow, so he only got half props for that.

Mr Magic, Fly Ty, Marley Marl, they the originators of the new way hip hop is done, Kane, Rakim, G Rap, L.L, the fathers to this, they all got produced initially by Marley Marl, in Queens Bridge PROJECTS, (that place should get Historic Preservation Status) than you add in Biz, Shan, Shante (the first to make the beef really nuts) and Craig G, Master Ace and dont forget the DJ’s, Mister Cee and Action and Polo & Cool V, and the one who kept is moving and the original hook master to never release an album T.J. Swan.

The Juice CREW > EVERYBODY (except Ra)
