Brooklyn MC Mos Def is organizing a tribute concert for his friend and collaborator, producer J Dilla. According to the Detroit News, the rapper will be backed by the Mos Def Big Band, an eight piece brass ensemble that has performed at Lincoln Center and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The show will be held on January 21, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, at the University of Michigan’s Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. J Dilla, who passed away in Februaury 2006 after a long battle with Lupus, was a Detroit native. “I know it’s going to be great,” said Dilla’s mother, Maureen Yancey. “I will be behind anything that they do.” Tickets for the event go on sale this Friday (November 16) and can be purchased online at ums.org, by phone or at the League Ticket Office on the University of Michigan campus.
