Dr. Donda West, noted professor and mother of Kanye West, passed away at a hospital in Los Angeles on Saturday night (November 10). Patricia Green, Dr. West’s publicist, confirmed to CNN that she passed during an unspecified “cosmetic procedure.” Kanye’s close relationship with his mother was well known to the public, and he penned the song “Hey Mama,” which appeared on his 2005 LP Late Registration, in honor of her. Dr. West taught English at the university level for 31 years and served as chairwoman Chicago State University’s English Department. In 2004, she retired in order to manage Kanye’s career, taking the role of CEO of West Brands, LLC and heading his non-profit organization the Kanye West Foundation. Earlier this year, Dr.West published the book Raising Kanye: Life Lessons from the Mother of a Hip-Hop Star. Dr. West was 58.
