Kanye West Films Public Service Announcement for ED in ’08 Campaign
On Friday (August 24), Kanye West filmed a public service announcement aimed at urging the 2008 presidential candidates to address the country’s educational crisis and dropout epidemic. Sponsored by Strong American Schools, which is backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the ED in ’08 campaign seeks to make education a top priority during the upcoming presidential election. “Becoming a music superstar took hard work but it also took a solid education,” Kanye says in the PSA, which features him standing in a classroom full of actual Chicago school children. According to the Associated Press, Ron Livingston of TV series Sex in the City, and Maura Tierney of ER, will also film PSA’s for the program.
In addition to the commercial, Kanye and his mother, Dr. Donda West, have also committed to an upcoming joint on behalf of the campaign. In return, ED in ’08 served as the title sponsor for the Kanye West Foundation’s benefit event at the House of Blues in Chicago on Friday night. “For many youth in the U.S., there is a sense of hopelessness owed largely to cutbacks in federal and state funding for educational programming,” said Dr. West, who oversees the Kanye West Foundation. “Our foundation focuses on providing qualitative programs in partnership with schools and communities. Engaging with the ED in ’08 campaign is yet another way that working together can make a significant difference.”
