Wyclef Jean, Biz Markie Join “50 Million Pound Challenge”
Wyclef Jean, Biz Markie and Doug E. Fresh have signed on to participate in The 50 Million Pound Challenge, a sweeping initiative to encourage African-Americans to lose weight and get and stay fit. Helmed by New York Times Bestselling author Dr. Ian Smith, the Challenge launched on April 7 and has signed up nearly 56,000 participants in its first month. On May 19, Clef, Biz and Doug E. Fresh will join Dr. Smith and other celebrities at Bay Front Park-Tina Hills Pavilion in Miami for a special event that will include entertainment, free health screenings and a walk. “No matter who you are or where you come from, we all need to take time to take care of our health, said Wyclef. “Life is too short and there’s too much music and good times to enjoy. The Challenge is giving us a great opportunity to look out for our health and look out for each other. It’s helping us make the choices we know we need to make. We all have the power to lead healthier, longer lives. Let’s not waste a moment. We owe it to our loved ones. We owe it to ourselves. If we pull together, we can make a tremendous difference.” As many as 135 million Americans are overweight and 80% of African-American women and 67% of African-American men fall into that category. “We will reverse these deadly trends together, one small step at a time,” said Dr. Ian. “The answer is clear. Reach your healthy weight, and you’ll look and feel great. You’re also likely to live longer!” The Challenge will be embarking on a 14-city tour that will include stops in Washington, D.C., New York, Baltimore, Atlanta and Houston.
