Jay-Z’s Mother Honored for Charity Work
Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, was honored at City Hall in New York City today for her work with the Shawn Carter Scholarship Fund, which she oversees. The organization, which was founded in 2003, helps disadvantaged individuals obtain higher education and provides mentoring programs and other services. Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Ms. Carter traveled with others to Houston to distribute clothing, food and toiletries to displaced New Orleans residents. According to the Associated Press, Queens Councilman Thomas White Jr. sponsored the ceremony and presented her with the framed proclamation before Wednesday’s City Council meeting. Jay was on hand for the ceremony and told reporters that he was “very proud” of his mother as they left the building.
