Member of Anti-Gun Rapper’s Entourage Charged in Shooting

A Pennsylvania man associated with a rapper who has spoken out against gun violence has been charged with the shooting of one of the artist’s friends reports The Patriot News. The shooter, Allyn Gumby, has been charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and firearms possession after shooting Dante Laster, 31, in the chest during an argument over a borrowed car. The three men had just returned to rapper Michael “Mike Nasty” Mason’s home in Lower Paxton Township after leaving a nightclub where they were celebrating the success of Mike Nasty’s anti-gun song “Da Truth Hurts.” The song decries gun violence and is part of a promotional campaign for federal program Project Safe Neighborhoods.

Gumby asked to borrow Mason’s car to drive a girl home 15 minutes away and when he returned two hours later he and Laster got into a shoving match outside the apartment. Laster testified in a hearing on Wednesday (January 31) that he entered Mason’s apartment where the rapper lectured him on fighting. When Mason walked outside to leave, he says Gumby jumped out and fired several shots, one of which hit him in the chest. Dauphin County District Attorney Edward M. Marsico Jr. expressed regret that Mason, who has turned his life around after serving time on drug charges, was caught in the middle of the incident. “Fortunately, Mr. Mason played no role in the shooting and was just a bystander,” Marsico said. “It just goes to show how difficult it is for a guy like Mr. Mason to get away from the gun culture.” Gumby was ordered to stand trial for the shooting and was remanded to the county jail on $250,000 bail.
