OutKast’s Idlewild Debuts at #2, Loses Top Spot to Danity Kane

outkast1.jpgThe soundtrack to OutKast’s long-delayed film, Idlewild, has landed in the number two spot on the Billboard 200 chart this week, after failing to outsell Diddy’s Making The Band protégés Danity Kane. The soundtrack, which doubles as the group’s sixth studio LP, moved about 196,000 units, roughly 38,000 less than Danity Kane’s self-titled debut. The first week sales represent quite a drop off for the Atlanta duo, whose last project, the Speakerboxxx/The Love Below double CD, moved 510,000 copies in its first week to debut at number one. Idlewild the movie also hit theaters last week, landing at number nine and pulling in $5.9 million at the box office. Elsewhere on the charts, DJ Kay Slay and Greg Street’s The Champions: The North Meets the South compilation landed at #57, moving just over 15,000 copies.

A lot of people are saying the album is wack but the movie is great. The movie was great but it still flopped.     i can’t believe Idlewild the movie did as well as it did. it was the highest-grossing movie based on per screen sales this week. i thought nobody would be checkin’ for the actual movie but it has done excellent considering it was limited wide release. all the seats were taken in almost all the theatres. the soundtrack didn’t move many units the first week but that’s due to the bad choice of the singles. once they make a video for “Hollywood Divorce” the sales should be steady. it’ll probably be one of those slow sellers that ends doin’ a couple million after its said and done.

    The movie didn’t flop. What people fail to realize is that the entire cast and extras are all black. That’s why it only released in 900 theaters, but it still did better numbers per theater than Invincible, and Invincible opened in almost 2000 more theaters.

    The album on the other hand… I’m disappointed. Forget that Dre isn’t rapping much, forget that we waited 3 years on this album: Dre and Big appear together on only 3 songs… This isn’t ok and it needs to stop.

    ok i think da only reason danity kane sold more than kast is because they had a way stronger buzz than outkast… they jus didn’t have dat jumpoff 1st single this time around but they still came out at #2 which is pretty damn good in my opinion!!
    dre does needa stop singin cus its gettin really old!! but knowin them they always surprise us and they jus might come back nex year wit sum heat… who knows… i do think hip hop is falling off though… i haven’t a real hit single since Golddigga… step it up yall!

    Average American Citizen-Goes to record store and looks at an album that got [once again] EXCELLENT reviews] billboard,internet and even media was supporting idlewild movie and album 100% as it seems],and skips it to buy an album cover with 5 WHORES…makes sense?-YUP…

    I saw the movie and the album was incredible…Outkast once again Defining what hip hop Could be if ignorant fuckers woke up and tried something different..

    Outkast is working on “The Hard 10″ as its currently being called [or 10 The Hard Way] and from what ive heard it should be similier to Stankonia? Which should be hot…id like to see some ATLiens style but its cool…if theyre gonna go out [sadly :(] they should do it in a classic way that should atleast get 4/5 album…somethin that will satisfy everyone…

    And Andre,i mean,its ok to do your vocalizing thing here and there,it makes songs better,but you cant make it your main style…andre has spit a total of 6 VERSES ON RECORDS SINCE STANKONIA…thats bad son…but atleast i can safely say Outkast is staying creative AND theyre music [instrumentals] continue getting better and better..

    Put “Hollywood Divorce” out and your fine ‘Kast….i think they know that too….

    Shout out to Coolblu2 for hor his comment regarding Idlewild. Idlewild is a soundtrack that is solely based on the theme of the movie. Thats what soundtracks are. so of course the subject and theme is going to b different than what they have presented in the past. Idlewild did not have a strong single AND was released on the same day as the highly publicized group Danity Kane. But I think creatively the album was superb, just not as widely accepted by the masses as their previous work. Hollywood Divorce is fire!!! And right on the money.

    I am a big Andre 3000 fan and I loved the movie and to thought the album was not all that great at first ,but it is the soundtrack to the movie. GO SEE THE MOVIE FIRST AND THEN BUY THE ALBUM. They go hand in hand. Also, realize that Outkast is not the same Kast they were before. They are growing up and out. Expanding their horizons. As long as they don’t stop rapping it’s all good.

If the Back Street Boys hit number one you fake bastards wouldn’t be talking about how great they are. Second of all, you can’t judge how good an album is by how much it sounds like what you expect it to sound like. And I could care less about Dre singing as long as he is singing quality material which he almost always does. Most of the people who are dissing this album are the same people that made “Laffy Taffy” a big hit…mindless retards with no real appreciation for music. This album isn’t perfect but it still gets 4/5 stars from me.
