Jay-Z Sued by 40/40 Designer

jay_close1.jpgInterior designer Ilan Waisbrod, the man behind the look and feel of Jay-Z’s 40/40 Sports Bar in New York City, has filed a lawsuit against the rapper, according to United Press International. Waisbrod, founder of design firm Studio Gaia, claims Jay-Z replicated the design of the club’s flagship Manhattan location for the newly opened Atlantic City property, a move he says violates the terms of the agreement between the two parties. The suit also charges that the Def Jam exec also planned to use similar designs at clubs he is set to open in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Singapore.

    uh…maybe a smart one? i doubt if any of the people who’ve commented know much about the legal system, contracts, interior design, etc., let alone what jay-z and the contractor agreed to. some lawyer (who does know about contracts and the law) has obviously taken the case on which means he/she believes it has merit. now it will be up to the judicial system to decide if this guy’s case has merit.

    that’s always the first sign of ignorance to me…people commenting on things they know nothing about. it happens all too often in these comment sections…

    When and If any of you idiots need the talents of an Interior Designer as Jay did, theres contract signed saying you cant use that design anywhere but where It was designed at unless the designer designs It, approves of It or Jay pays hime to replicate that said design.

It’s just hard to concieve that someone could copyright style because its not a very tangible thing. And do you not realize how easy it is to file a lawsuit against someone as rich and famous as Jay Z? Just the thought of the money and notoriety a lawyer could gain is enough for most of them. Look how many aritists get sued on a regular basis….

    i’m beginning to think Jon Jon–23 is functionally illiterate. first of all, where in the article does it say that the design was copyrighted? there is a difference between having something copyrighted and having a contract that states that the designed can’t be replicated without permission.

    second, just because YOU find something hard to conceive doesn’t make it so. you said yourself you haven’t studied interior design, so why would you find it hard to conceive anything about a subject which you know nothing about?

    third, where is the ignorance in my post? most of the people who commented before me tried to imply that the case was bullshit and all i said was that whatever lawyer is representing Ilan Waisbrod, he/she probably knows more about contract law than anyone posting on this site. lawyers don’t take on cases they don’t believe have merit. in other words, simpleton, someone who is trained in the LEGAL PROFESSION believes the interior designer has a case, so who are the idiots on this site (like you, who admittedly knows nothing about interior design) to say he doesn’t?
