beatnuts.jpgThis Sunday (August 13), the annual Black August benefit concert will be held at the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill in New York's Times Square. Billed as "A celebration of Hip Hop and our Freedom Fighters," and organized by the Malcom X Grassroots Movement, the benefit is now in it's ninth consecutive year. This year’s show is dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina and The Angola 3, and will feature performances by Brand Nubian, CL Smooth, the Beatnuts and M1 of dead prez, as well as some surprise headlining acts to be revealed on the night of the event. Born within the California prison system in the 1970s, Black August was originally intended to honor the memory of slain political activists such as George and Jonathan Jackson and James McClain. It has since evolved into a month of political awareness and outreach with the goal of educating individuals and communities on the ongoing struggle for equality and justice.
