Lil’ Flip’s attorney and manager Sandy Lal announced today that the Houston rapper has left the Sony Music Group. While he gave no reason for the split, Lal made clear that he was able to negotiate the rights to keep the masters of Flip’s upcoming album I Need Mine
. The album, Flip’s third for Sony, had its release date repeatedly pushed back since it was originally set to hit stores in late 2005. “Usually, it’s like the labels have all the power,” said Flip in a statement. “No one else could have negotiated a release so favorable to me as an artist—and I got to take my masters with me! Incredible.” While the record leaked to the internet earlier this week, I Need Mine
did not hit stores on Tuesday (June 27), it’s most recent official release date with Sony. Flip has not officially signed a new deal, but XXLMAG.COM has learned that he is in negotiations with the Warner Music Group.
