Cover Story
“Cocaina”

Jay-Z reminisces about his firstborn: Reasonable Doubt.

Features
“Been Through the Storm”

He was overshadowed by 50 Cent when he released his first album. Then, while plugging away at a second one, he was shot in the head. And he recently lost his friend, cousin and label mate, Proof. The things Obie Trice has to deal with…

“Where I’m At”

Can Diddy do it with Bad Boy South and his new artist from A-Town? Yung Joc makes it look like that might just be goin’ down.

“Told You So”

It’s been 10 years since Jigga’s first album, Reasonable Doubt, dropped, changing rap forever. In honor of the anniversary, XXL sat down with its creators to discuss the making of the hip-hop classic.

“We Gonna Be Alright”

We first met the Diplomats six years ago. After much growth, fame and fortune for the Dipset rappers, it’s time to jump some new blood into the team. Hell Rell and J.R. Writer fill the positions.

“Represent”

Is Pitbull an MC? Can he spit? Is he part of the Miami rap scene? We weren’t really even sure at first, so we decided to get to the bottom of what the hip-hop Cubano’s career is all about.

But of Jay-Z is the greatest MC alive.. Brooklyn stand up..

  • JCharades

Don’t get it twisted my dude, Jay-Z deserves that cover wit a classic album. Those who hate dont progress give respect to the best that ever did it. Pac was the greatest Thug Rapper and Big was the best lyricist. Hov change the face of Hip-Hop no question and is still doing it big. All that biting ish ppl talk is just an excuse cuz most cant take off like he did cuz where they try to branch out he’s got on lock as far a Hip-Hop. That is wat got him there and he paid homage always. Give respect where its do and hop off the hate train. Case and point the term swagger jackin needs to die that shyts wack as hell.

he is by far the greatest , he has been very consistent since he dropped with reasonable doubt , thou RS is his best , there hasnt benn nobody like him , not even tupac , he was a good rapper but not as good as hov , does he have some like RS ?i mean lyrically, and biggie i think is the only one that can compare to him nad probably better than him but he is dead and hov is not, RS is so deep, hov deserves this cover, get educated on this people go get RS and youll see what jigga is about

  • RAMMY

They could of picked a better cover this month. I don’t care about his fuckin album or how it was made 10 years ago. He is a great rapper but somethin like that doesn’t deserve a cover.

  • yagurl_MaciMace

Yo I freaking love Hov,I respect the shit out of him. He is one of the best to ever do it, and these little dueds think they could just step in and disrespect the nigga who open up the door for most of them. Hip Hop is way more than money and some similies and metaphors it is all about you showmanship. People don’t seem to understand that. They think its all about spitting a few punchlines and thats it. This man Jay-Z came from the worst and worked on being the best. He was doing rap and then he basically conqured that. Now he is progressing and learning more. Who says music has to be it for him. Now he is invested in basketball, restaurants, sports bars and fashion this man is doing big things why can’t people respect that. His music wasn’t gonna be forever it had to end sometime so why can’t he move on. Stop hating on the man and let him do him…Its Mace signing off…Over and out! Its The Roc!!!

  • neu.sense

Rammy shut the fuck up.and carlos nasty nas is the greatest of all time bitch get it right lyrically speaking that is.holla!!

I still smack white cats for sayin’ that around me. Yall need to do the same or white folks will keep sayin’ that to us and around us like we still on the plantation. Wake up yall. It’s ’06, and we need to step up.
    One Love

  • Killa Cam

    Fuck Jay-Z.

  • brown catro

jigga ma nigga, let me tell u sumthin u ignorant hatin motherfuckerz, jay-z is da most wel established rapper to ever maintain shine since da bigginin of his career. I’m also a fan of hardcore hip-hop but at da end of da day its not wat inspires me as a person but wat educates us as black folks…jay-z inspires one to live up and understand dat its a new day. enough with da politics dat wil never feed ur family but wil alwayz bring back bad memories of our 4 fathers dying as slaves. Its a sad thought but have u ever sat down and thought about urself 4 a change? Jay-z is da kinda rapper dat even ur lil kid wil b like ‘daddy i want 2 b like him one day’, dat is wat we need as ppl..inspiration. its ’06. Jay-z is wat u dudes are stil talkin about 2day, doesn’t dat tel u da niggaz big? Jay-z is actualy da rap industry itself not history. keep it up jay, hip-hop is proud of u! from B-catro in London/kingston. brownnxumalo@yahoo.co.uk

Hey, my first visit too this site, to be honest, im actually a reader of “The Source”, Im livin In Australia and we dont get too many hip-hop magazines here as you guys get up in the states, anyway i was passin through Magazine outlet and i saw the new issue of “XXL” to be honest i would normally just pass by but, what caught my eye was The Jigga, speakin out on Reasonable Doubt, i must of ast for a good 15 mins readin that article/interview, i was hooked, that album means the world to me, if it wasnt for that alum i wouldnt be a DJ, just wanna giv u guys a bigg!!! thankyou for doin that article, and keepin it Hood, wer im at the desert lol

  • Saadir

I gotta thank Chairman Mao for introducing me to Superiority Complex. This is the best album I’ve heard since “Be”. I was looking for someone who represented that Tribe Called Quest vibe (warm, soulful beats, lyrics, a variety of topics) and this is it. That jazzy Hip Hop is coming back strong. If you’re tired of the same o’ same o’, then check out Superiority Complex. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Thank you Mao. You done good.

  • beettt

    i love hip hop…that all

*Comments on the September issue “Cruel Summer, Banks and 50″

I’m so tired of seeing G-Unit on the cover of XXL. Do they have some sort of contract with XXL? What don’t we know about them that we haven’t found out in the other 13 magazines which they were on the cover! I started reading this magazine when ya’ll had Foxy Brown on the cover looking sexy, which was the last time a woman graced the cover back in 2003. What’s the deal? I need some pics for my Yahoo Group, “Ladies of Rap Soul” @

    http://groups.yahoo.com/ladiesofrapsoul

Remy Ma deserved a cover, Trina deserved a cover. Shawnna’s doin’ her thang right now, put her on the cover! Mia X doin’ her thang on MySpace, put her somewhere in the magazine telling her Hurricane Katrina story!

    C’mon XXL, enough with G-Unit!

  • http://xxlmag.com AJ

There are more white people in jail than black people. We only make up 13% of the population while crackers like DSHHSH make up the rest.

Get your facts straight muthafucka- the only reason you ain’t in a coma is because you typing shit behind your damn computer. Fuckin’ pussy. Just like your killer President George Bush. Why you at a hip-hop website, anyway? Shouldn’t you be in some tight-ass jeans with a cowboy hat, dancing to your fuckin’ country songs, BITCH! Ignorant piece of shit.

  • Wez

Reasonable Doubt is by far the Best Rap Album ever….only Illmatic and Ready 2 Die come close. Jay is the Best Rapper ever. Please don’t leave Rap alone the game needs ya!!

  • Corinne

Don’t you people know, there’s really no such thing as “The best”, that’s all opinion based. Every rapper has their best and has their worse, then again there’s some that just has…worse. Jay Z has the cover, he deserves it, he is a good rapper. I mean come on now, it’s not a big thing, a lot of rappers are going to make cover, Chingy did….damn..=/

  • Mrs.Jones

Jay-Z is whats good. He deserved the cover point_blank!

  • dj

this magazine was hot just read it yesterday good issue

  • Darnell

Yo, I just wanna talk about what Khia siad about being the Queen of the South, This bitch sayin she’s indpendent and doesn’t aprove of these female rappers rappin’about what man want? Bitch ur song is called My Neck, My Back. Ur talkin about bustin nuts. ur just a hipocrate. Shawnna is the best female rapper hands down, u ain’t hot

  • southsown

big ups on the articles on jay hova. but one thing that i had a problem with in this issue, is khia!
what the fuck is wrong with her?
she claims to be the “real” queen of the south.
how the hell do you claim that and you only put one album out and one single out; and both of them muthafuckaz flopped!
tha best female artist coming from the south is, shawnna.
listen to “gettin some” and her new single “damn”!
listen to her on luda’s albums.
she can roll with the best of the niggaz in the game!
    big ups to XXL

    p.s.
please, no more g unit, shady, aftermath covers.
give snoop and the dogg pound some love or rick ross, maybe even dmx!

  • j street

This issue was nice…one thing you people gotta realize is that this nigga was rappin about ALL the things that were going on around him or things that he has been through

  • EIS RH.

Jay-z is well rapper like Pac, biggie, Em, 50, and others, please don’t talkin shit about rappers who got million bucks, I know you ain’t got it too, so these rappers haved really bad past and they grew up and now they stay on the top of world of hiphop

  • John

    Thursday
    08-03-06

I recently started reading XXL magazine and was interested to see Jay-Z on your August Cover.
I read the Article “The Making of Reasonable Doubt” and really enjoyed it. I never heard the album – was intrigued by the stories behind the songs and am now trying to find a copy of the CD. The writers did a great job of putting that issue together. Dpwn thje line I’m gong to subscribe to XXL.

It would be great – if the XXL staff did the same treatment for the early 90′s album “BREAKING ATOMS” by the MAIN SOURCE. That album contains NAS’s debut on LIVE AT THE BAR-B-CUE and all the rest of the great songs on the album. Just like you did for REASONABLE DOUBT, get in touch with and interview all the folks who helped to create that album.
    Now that would be DOPE!

  • Sel Dog

Reasonable Doubt is some more New York bullshit. Who said this was a classic? Every song I passed over bacause of wack lines and music. ‘Ain’t no nigga” was the only good song, because of the music. real classics are “Paid in full.” Almost any album from Public Enemy , NWA’s “Staight out of Compton”, and the first album from WC and the Maad Circle “Ain’t A Damn Thing Changed.” You could pick an album from Run D.M.C and Jam Master Jay. 2-Pac’s music is just the best of all time hands down. Nobody is,was and will never be on his level.

  • The Purest

I just wanna say that the Chairman’s Choice section has turned me onto some unbelievable music with the August Issue (The Jay-Z Cover). Superiority Complex’s album Stand Up is one of the best album’s I’ve heard in years! Very refreshing! It seems like we might have some worthy heirs to the throne that Tribe left vacant so 8 years ago. My only problem is the album was hard to find since they didn’t leave any info in the article. Check it out here at; http://www.cdbaby.com/superiority . Just listen to some of the tracks and TRY to resist buying it!

  • leodjoneluv

jay is wack, the only reason he blew, was because the real niggas like Pac, died out. New York tried to put somebody out there in the main stream. Nas is way better than that jungle looking monkey nigga Jay Z. Im from the Tupac and Biggie Era.

  • http://www.yahoomail.com african KING

jay is the G.O.A.T’the greatest that ever came if u can`t dig dat then fuck u.show em how to this hov
