I think it should be noted that no one is dicussing, or even seems to be familiar with the facts of this case…

The official police reports coming out in Detroit cites the evidence as showing that Proof drew his gun and shot Keith Bender in the head after beating him severely… It was apparently over an argument over a game of pool. No charges of murder or manslaughter were ever filed against Proof’s shooter(who was not the man Proof killed), as the shooting of Proof has been officially recognised by the state as an act of self defense.

Now, the following are my opinions, based on the facts that I am aware of:

I wonder, what could have Keith Bender, or anyone on this Earth possibly do to deserve this kind of a sudden death? Disrespecting someone, as some of you have expressed?

Well I ask you, what is more disrespectful than stomping someone, and then shooting them in the head?

If you really believe in justice and a romantic idea of honor, then what do you think Proof “deserved”? Is he somehow exempt, just because you’ve heard of him and you admire him? Well who was Keith Bender? Another fact is that NONE of us know… We’re all just blowing smoke out of our ass in judging his character. It is unfair because dead men tell no tales. Proof on the other hand, did tell us alot about who he was, and in his lyrics, especially in the songs “Forgive Me”, and “Kurt Kobain”, it is clear that he considered himself a violent sinner who had hurt people during his life, and moreover, that he wasn’t proud of this. Only his actions now live to show whether this was cathartic confession and rebuke, with an honest hope for change, or simply observation or boasting that offered little or no insight or change in him. If he did long for change and failed, then the tragedy is only compounded in lewe of that.

I don’t believe in a human being “deserving” anything from another human being, but I do believe that the choices and behavior that Proof engaged in that night, and perhaps up until that night in carrying a concealed firearm illegally, directly resulted in his death. There’s simply no way this could have happened otherwise.

It’s sad to say, but no one else did more to instigate Proof’s shooting than himself.

This is especially tragic for a man who had had some success, and who had every opportunity to make his life about making music for his fans, as he claimed he was most about in his lyrics, instead of feeding on the perhaps very bad conditions and mindset that he came from and continuing to get involved in violence. No matter how any argument starts, it’s always your decision how it ends. Especially if you are holding the gun. Escalating it to the point of even brandishing a gun is never neccessary, except in the case of self defense, which, in Proof’s case, is the exact opposite of how it went down, according to the evidence and multiple eyewitness reports.

As a fan and follower of Proof’s music, I am indeed hurt by what happened. My hurt stems from his loss, but also from the sense I have of having believed in something positive happening in his life with his music, some positive change beyond material wealth and fame. Stealing victory from the jaws of defeat. Coming from nothing and turing your life around. Attaining a public platform to use to point out hypocrisy and to help others and affect change. This is what I believe rap, or almost any kind of music is supposed to be about. How can this happen when you can’t succeed in affecting that change in yourself? I always felt it sad when someone, like Proof, who should have made it out of the “fuck the world” mentality through creative endeavors, can’t find an inspiration beyond that. In listening to his lyrics, the way his life ended seems prophesized, and sadly suicidal in how avoidable it really was. The decisions he made in his personal life have let down the many fans who could only have wanted him to continue doing his thing and, moreover, to simply survive and stay on this Earth as long as possible. As far as his family and friends go, I have no idea how they feel, and I won’t speculate, save to say that if they loved him and enjoyed having him around, then I don’t imagine that they would think his honor, or his anything else was ultimately worth his life.

The fact that someone else had to be taken with him on his self destructive trip only compounds the pointlessness and tragedy of this “death over dishonor” mentality. Did Proof’s honor come out in tact? If so, was it worth his own life? Simply put, in this game, no one wins.

If you truly think that Keith Bender, who none of us knew, deserved his death that night, and the incident was justified, then what kind of a fan are you of Proof’s? Wouldn’t you rather have him alive today? Or if he had lived- on tour, and not in a jail cell? Is his “realness” as a rapper more important to you than his life or even his quality of life as a person? Do you think that those of you who refuse to let someone elvove as a rapper, or moreover, change as a person after they’ve had some success, could have led to this in some way? Did Proof feel he had to preserve his “realness” in the eyes of nihilistic hip hop fans? -The people who applauded where he came from rather than where he could have taken his life? If this is the case, then we all bear some responsibility for this in what we support as fans and the message that that gives to rappers. Maintaining an image, a credibility, or a mentality to stay inspired and “real” shouldn’t have to take this sort of toll. And fuck anyone who thinks this was all worth it somehow, and that anyone got what they deserved. Some people, or both people may have got what they were flirting with and perhaps asking for, but that’s only makes it more sad.

Of course, I don’t expect anyone who assumed Keith Bender must have been a whiteboy(which he wasn’t) right off the bat, and/or deserved to die for “disrespecting the realest man in the club”, would ever be able to look into this any deeper than they obviously have looked into the lyrics and life of Proof himself.

Had Proof survived, he would have most likely faced murder charges in Michigan. Another person would still be dead, and Proof’s career and life would still be fucked up. There is no silver lining to this in any alternate possible outcome.

In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with a grieveing family seeking some sort of official decision or statement for posterity in regard to holding their loved one’s killer publicly responsible, especially if he is dead and cannot face any repercussions for his actions in life. Is this detrimental to Proof’s family and legacy? Yes it is. But I ask you, who escalated the violence and could have stood to prevent this in the first place? It is yet another, posthumous, repurcussion of the choices Proof made that night.

Proof’s family would have been equally eligible under the law to this recourse had he been in murdered in the same manner as Mr. Bender.

The fact that someone has expressed the hope that Keith Bender’s family is killed over this is so appauling, and so obviously borne out of a solipsilstic psychosis that it would be an exercise in futility to discuss why.

There is nothing in the report of this lawsuit that specifies monetary damages so far. Perhaps that’s not truly the motivation, but rather, it is peace of mind, or exacting whatever justice is possible under the law. I don’t know. But if it is money, then how does that somehow make any difference? Have any of you ever lost a loved one and known exactly, through indisputable evidence, who was responsible and that it could have been prevented? I haven’t, but I can only imagine that any amount of money could only be a cold comfort after that.

It would seem that some of you are quite passionate about justice, and defending honor. But if you truly don’t give a fuck, then how can you expect anything more out of this world than chaos in return if that’s all you give? It’s hypocritical to not accept the fact that someone else may take the measure to defend themselves or perhaps even their “honor” in the same way you do and have it come back to hurt you.

At the end of the day, if that’s how you feel, then you should be elated at the way this unfolded. Proof lived up to his lyrics. Sadly, in my opinion. A triumph for the “realness” of the rapper, and a tragedy for the life of two men.

I can only imagine the what the next inflammatory posts will say about me, but I don’t care. I value life, and I had respected Proof. This whole thing was an upsetting dissapointment, but nothing more than some of the disgusting and hurtful opinions expressed here on xxlmag.com I felt compelled to express myself on behalf of anyone who gives a fuck about anything in this world and was really listening to the man himself. Maybe if he felt there were more of us out there really listening in the first place, he would have been in the studio, venting, having fun, whatever, instead of in the club with a gun looking for, or at least gladly accepting trouble, and this never would have happened.
