Tru Life is on a mission to prove a point. Last year, the New York City rapper returned with Walking on Water, his first release in over a decade. On the 11-track album, which features contributions from heavy hitters like Future, Tory Lanez and T.I., among others, Tru reminds the naysayers he's built to last.

“I feel like Jesus walked on water to prove that God was real and me being an underdog coming out of prison for so many years I feel like everybody doubted me and didn’t feel like I could survive in this era knowing that the music is so different,” he says while explaining the meaning behind the title of his latest piece of work. Out to showcase his talent, Tru Life flexes his freestyle skills for XXL’s Flex Zone series.

“I learned all 10 Commandments from B-I-G,” Tru Life spits. “Put the white in the Holy Water, chef the P-I-E/Snoop taught the cripple to walk and Suge split the Red Sea/I’m trying to see, is Mary a virgin?/LeBron told me she’s not, King James version/God Son said it was written, I was born to ride/Seen a picture of Aaliyah then looked in the saint’s eye/Then I pulled the Cris' out like it was St. Ides.”

During his freestyle visit, the former Roc Boy spoke on his current Freebandz affiliation. Pledging allegiance to the label founded by his brother-in-rhyme Future, Tru Life says, “Freebandz is forever, whether I was on paper or not on paper. Freebandz is forever. I might as well tatt it on my face. Me and Future go back as being brothers.”

According to the Tru York MC, Future, who appears on the Walking on Water cut “Last Night” and “Baddie,” supported him from the moment he was released from prison. This ultimately led to the two making their partnership official in 2017. “He was the first person that called me when I came out," Tru Life shares. "The whole ride home in the Spinter, coming from upstate New York that’s who I spoke with on the phone.”
