Lil Baby Reflects on His Rise in New ‘Preacherman’ Documentary

Quality Control has released another documentary profiling one of the label's rising acts. Preacherman, which hit YouTube today (Sept. 26), tells the story of Lil Baby's origins and rise to fame.

The 26-minute film was directed by Mandon Lovett, who's helming the forthcoming full-length Jeezy documentary. QC founders Pierre "Pee" Thomas and Kevin "Coach K" Lee executive produced.

The doc opens outside Baby's childhood home in Atlanta, where his mother Lashawn Jones recounts his childhood and explains the story behind his nickname. The film traces the rapper's pre-teen days helping his mom's stepdad win dice games and briefly details Baby's high school legal troubles and eventual two-year prison stint.

Lil Baby famously started rapping after earning his freedom, and the doc tells the story behind that decision, too. It also recounts how Baby developed his relationship with "My Dawg" producer Quay Global, who soundtracks the doc, and offers a look at the rapper's process in the booth.

The doc's title comes from another of Baby's childhood nicknames, explained in the closing minute with a prophetic story by Baby's aunt Sadonna Grimes.

"Back in the day, my aunt, his great-great aunt, would say that he was 'Preacherman.' That's what she used to call him, 'Preacherman,'" she says. "He always had something to say. And he didn't have to say a lot, but he always had something to say. I think this is a form of him preaching."

Quality Control this year also produced a Migos documentary titled Culture and partnered with Mass Appeal on a City Girls documentary titled Point Blank Period. You can watch Preacherman below.
