Jay Rock’s World Gets Pixelated in New “ES Tales” Video

Jay Rock has let loose another video from his June album Redemption. The "ES Tales" visual, released today (July 9), finds the TDE rapper driving around Los Angeles as his surroundings transform into an 8-bit fever dream.

The clip, directed by Jack Begert and Dave Free, opens with Rock waking up to the sounds of his son playing a 1980s-style shooting video game. The rapper leaves his house and drives around town, only to discover that police vehicles, street fighters and homeless encampments have all transformed into chunky blocks of pixels. The visual gag, presumably inspired by the beat's sampling of Super Mario Bros. sound effects, produces a surreal neighborhood tour.

Jay uses the opportunity to serve unfiltered observations of his very real surroundings. "Look, I'm deep inside the projects where it's brackin' at, you know the zip/Where we take a quarter piece, flip it 'til the corner lit/A1 yola, that fresh over the border shit/Shootouts and abortions, situations so unfortunate," he raps. The message is clear: This isn't a game.

TDE has gone hard on visuals in support of Jay Rock's latest album. "ES Tales" is the fifth song from Redemption to earn a video, following "OSOM," "Win," "The Bloodiest" and "King's Dead." The rapper is scheduled to kick off a 29-date North American in support of the project on September 12 in Lawrence, Kan.
