J.I.D and Ski Mask The Slump God Are Perfectionists – 2018 XXL Freshman Roundtable Interview

As the two designated verbal technicians of the 2018 XXL Freshman Class, Atlanta's J.I.D and Fort Lauderdale, Fla.’s Ski Mask The Slump God had a lot to live up to when they hopped in front of a camera for their XXL Freshman cypher. With their breathless flows and nimble rhyming techniques on full display, it's clear they had no problem living up to the hype.

Their rhyme session was an undeniably dope one. Just as awesome was their post-cypher conversation about the moment as part of the 2018 XXL Freshman Class, which also includes Miami’s Lil Pump and Smokepurpp, London’s Stefflon Don, Memphis’ BlocBoy JB, Birmingham, Ala.’s YBN Nahmir, West Palm Beach, Fla.’s Wifisfuneral and Canton, Ohio’s Trippie Redd.

At the 2018 XXL Freshman shoot, J.I.D rapped as if the cypher was something he'd been waiting for his entire life. You get similar vibes while listening to his roundtable interview with Ski Mask.

"I've been thinking about everybody's [2018 XXL Freshman] cypher all year, or when I found out that we'd be doing this," J.I.D says. Ski Mask echoes that sentiment. "I'm not gon' lie. Pertaining to this, I watched everybody's cypher," Ski confirms as he bursts into laughter.

Both Ski Mask, a.k.a Beyoncé, and J.I.D say they watched Freshman cyphers from years' past before they stepped to the mic at the 2018 XXL Freshman shoot. J.I.D reveals it was his own competitiveness that led him to do so.

"I'm just gon' every time put my best foot forward and I know [Ski Mask] will do the same. I like perfectionists," J.I.D states of his approach to his part of the 2018 XXL Freshman cypher.

"I know I do swag rap also, but I also take it seriously. It's like 50-50," Ski shares before he gives J.I.D a microphone fist bump. They also reveal they're linking up with each other in the studio. Hip-hop needs this collaboration.

While J.I.D and Ski Mask didn't know one another well before the day of the shoot, you get the sense that they became pretty cool with each other after the day's festivities. All in all, this moment was pretty dope to see unfold.
