Jay Rock Didn't Know Future Was on "King's Dead"

Jay Rock's "King's Dead" off the Black Panther soundtrack and his own Redemption album has become the highest charting single of his career so far. With verses from Kendrick Lamar and Future, it's no surprise the song became a hit, but according to Jay Rock, he had no idea Future was on the song when he recorded his part.

The TDE rapper stopped by The Breakfast Club on Tuesday (June 19) and discussed how the song came to be. According to Jay Rock, he was actually in the studio working on Redemption right across from Kendrick who was working on Black Panther: The Album.

Jay Rock says Kendrick played him the Mike Will Made It-produced instrumental and asked him if he had something he could rap for it. "I come over, he playing this beat, and I'm like 'This beat hard right here.' He's like 'Yeah, Mike Will did this. You got something for it?'" he said.

After laying down his verse, Jay Rock thought the track was a wrap but eventually heard Future's part on the song. "Basically I didn't even know he had the Future verse," Rock said. "I did my verse and then I went out and came in and Future on this motherfucker."

But Jay Rock wasn't too upset about Future's spot on the song, as the rapper knew it was destined to be a hit. "I swear to God, dawg, when I first heard that, dawg, I said 'This is outta here, it's a hit record,'" he added.

In related Jay Rock news, the rapper recently dropped his latest video for the song "The Bloodiest." Directed by Colin Tilley, the grim video features Jay Rock walking through the streets as scenes of stick-ups, funerals and more play out.
