A new generation of South Florida rappers has been making noise all year. But one name that's stood out from the bunch is Smokepurpp, a 19-year-old Miami native who has rode Soundcloud to prominence after dropping a string of popular tracks like "No Smoke," "Ski Mask" and "Audi.," his biggest song to date.

Purpp signed to Alamo Records—a new venture by former 300 Entertainment co-founder Todd Moscowitz under Interscope—in March. Six months later, he dropped his highly anticipated project DEADSTAR, a 16-track tape that features Chief Keef, Yo Gotti, Juicy J, D.R.A.M. and fellow rap phenomenon Lil Pump. Soon after, Smokepurpp revealed that he inked a deal with Travis Scott's Cactus Jack label and dropped a surprise Mike Dean-produced collab with La Flame called "Fingers Blue." He's even dropped his own smartphone app titled Deadstar: The Game, which features three new songs.

Smokepurpp's come-up story goes much deeper, though. The rap rookie dropped by for a proper introduction in the latest installment of XXL's Who Am I?, a video series in which hip-hop upstarts walk us through the career journey thus far with fun facts sprinkled in between. He sat down with XXL to talk about the music that raised him, his beginnings as a producer making "trash-ass beats," meeting Lil Pump and the origin of his signature one-liner "esketit." Watch and learn in the video below.
