Desiigner loves The Temptations’ “My Girl.” The young rapper sang it in the studio last November and got another chance to do so during an appearance on Power 106’s The Cruz Show.

The 2016 XXL Freshman’s energy was infectious as he got the whole Cruz Show staff to sing along. Desiigner’s affection for Temptations’ classic song makes sense due to his appreciation for old soul music. Last year, spoke about his attachment to older music in an conversation with his G.O.OD. Music boss Pusha T.

“I like the old soul — you know how it is, Pusha, that old soul,” Desiigner said. “My grandfather, he went by the name Sidney ‘Guitar Crusher’ Selby; he formed that old soul, that old blues, that old rock that I put on my songs. He bluesed it out. And my pops, he was old-school, too; he played that old funk. I fell in love with that old style. You feel me?”

Desiigner recently got to talk about his grandfather’s music in an interview with Nardwuar. The Human Serviette presented the “Panda” artist with a 1963 vinyl copy of Selby’s work, which delighted the Brooklyn native.

“That’s my grandfather,” Desiigner told Nardwuar. “Shout out my grandfather, the guitar crusher… Sidney Shelby, I’m Sidney the third. That’s my grandfather. I’m a fan of him. He inspires me throughout my music career. It’s the genes of ’em, you dig?”
