Royce Da 5’9″ Believes Ghostwriting Accusations Keep Drake From Being a Top Lyricist

It's no secret that Royce Da 5'9" is one of the more in-demand ghostwriters in the game having worked with the likes of Diddy and Dr. Dre. So who better to ask about the current state of ghostwriting in the game and Drake's alleged use of a writer. In an interview with DJ Vlad, Royce was asked whether the use of a ghostwriter knocked Drake from being considered one of the top lyricists in the game.

"It has to," the MC responded bluntly. "It has to. It's only fair."

Royce went a little more in-depth on his thoughts on ghostwriting and was surprised that the fact that Meek Mill revealed Quentin Miller as Drizzy's ghostwriter wasn't that big of a deal to people in the grand scheme of things.

"For me to look and see the way that everyone reacted to that, that was pretty fuckin' surprising. And it made me not care," he said. "When I first heard about it, I was like, 'What? Drizzy not writing?!' Because he's so fuckin' dope. Looking back at it in retrospect, it's a new way of creating. I guess hip-hop is evolving a little slower than other genres and if this is what it's evolving into, I accept it. I choose not to work like that. There's a certain fulfillment I get from writing myself but I do understand going out and partying, staying in tune with what's going on outside the booth while people are working inside the studio then coming back and A&R'ing the whole shit and producing the song, that's a beastly ass way of working. I just get fulfillment out of writing."

Royce's heavy media blitz is due to the nearing release of his Layers album and Trust the Shooter EP. Layers is due out April 15 while Trust the Shooter does not have a release date but will be released "very soon, before the album."
