Daddy-O of Stetsasonic Feels Offended by a Rakim Line From Almost 30 Years Ago

Stetsasonic's Daddy-O has a wealth of knowledge and stories thanks to over 30 years in the record biz. Last week, the Brooklyn native stopped by the SiriusXM studios to chop it up with Sway on "Sway in the Morning" and gave listeners a lesson in hip-hop history. Along with breaking down how Junior M.A.F.I.A. formed, the beef between Foxy Brown and Lil' Kim, the egos of Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole and who he considers the best rapper of all time, Daddy-O threw shots Rakim's way.

After mentioning that he'd be interested in serving as a mentor for rappers like Chief Keef and Rick Ross, Daddy-O explained how Rakim "told the biggest lie in hip-hop." "He said, 'it ain't where you're from, it's where you're at,'" he started, quoting Rakim's "I Know You Got Soul." "He fucked everything up, they think he's the best MC. It's always been about where you're from. Any MC worth his salt is gonna talk about where he's from...The reason Rakim can't make records now is because he has nothing left to talk about."

The OG went on to explain his stance and maintained that hip-hop artists from the "golden age" aren't producing at the same level as their peers in rock-n-roll. "So my thing is 2015-2016, Led Zeppelin makes a record, Megadeath makes another record, we know what U2 is doing, an Anthrax record—all these records. [We're] supposed to be the Golden Age—what the hell? We already started making records, so this is not about what T-Rex and them do. This is not about me and Rakim battling in some office or some hallway. This is records now. We became recording artists. Where are the records? I’m puttin’ out an album a quarter; I’m not putting out bullshit. Even my videos don’t look like bullshit, and I shoot them in a day. Come on! And if you’re not, just stop saying you’re a legend, stop saying all that shit, just go home.”

Daddy-O also said that Hov is the best rapper of all time, but he doesn't consider himself a fan. "I'm not even a Jay Z fan, but if Jay isn't the best to ever do it, then who the hell is? Knock it off. He makes records. People can talk about everything but records, but records are the way people know you. "
