In a recent interview, GQ’s Mark Anthony Green asked Young Thug if he was excited about Hy!£UN35, his debut retail album that is presumably forthcoming on 300. Thug replied, “Not really.” Under most circumstances, this could be chalked up to a rapper being either playful or standoffish during a grueling press run. But one gets the impression that the Atlanta rapper could be, simply, frustrated. Though he’s spent the last two years on the pop charts via various hits—including Rich Gang’s inescapable “Lifestyle” and Jamie xx’s “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times),” which also features Popcaan—Young Thug has failed to get a solo song to stick. In turn, his label has balked at a couple of scheduled release dates. What we have instead is Slime Season, a long, messy and frequently brilliant collection of new material and songs that were leaked earlier this summer. The video for “Power,” presumably filmed just after his instant-classic video interview in France, features hoverboard acrobatics and an improbable feat of basketball skill—or maybe rim-lowering skill.
