Curren$y and Wiz Khalifa ensured their fans would have an extra reason to celebrate the 4/20 holiday this year by releasing Live in Concert, their first collaborative project since their 2009 cult classic How Fly. Originally planned as a free mixtape, the reunion saw its share of delays before arriving just over a week ago as a retail release. One of the most striking elements of Live in Concert is the incorporation of long, jazzy flute solos, courtesy of Bobby Humphrey’s 1975 album Fancy Dancer. In fact, these solos get almost as much time to shine as Wiz and Curren$y. So it was only right that we get Spitta on the line for an explanation of these amazing flutes and how Live in Concert saw the light of day.—Neil Martinez-Belkin (@Neil_MB)

So what’s going on with these flutes?

[Laughs] Let’s think about what Ron Burgundy’s jazz flute did to Mrs. Corningstone. Ron Burgundy mastered that flute and it made him able to bring her to Pleasure Town on animated horses and they were fuckin’ out in the solar system and all of that. So how could we not employ the talents of Ron Burgundy and his jazz flute on as many cuts as possible for Live in Concert. Nah, man. Honestly, that is the genius that is Bobby Humphrey and his album that was put together long before me and my brother Wiz ever thought about rapping. [Laughs] I think at one point there’s maybe like two minutes of flute and nothing else. It’s for everybody’s soul, man. Some people don’t understand it immediately, but after they give it a second and third listen, they understand the music.

I know there were some sample clearance issues with this project. Are these the original songs you recorded for it?

These are them sans one record that we didn’t put on because the person who owned the rights to that record…See we have no problem paying for clearances. I got no problem with that. But this guy, not only were we going to pay him for the sample clearance but he was trying to change lyrics. Things he didn’t like that Wiz said about a chick and shit he didn’t like that I said about weed. Basically we were like “Fam, if you don’t wanna make the bread then cool. We just won’t put the record out.” So homie chose not to pick up the bread and that’s fine. We’re not gonna jump through all these hoops on someone’s behalf when I feel like what we’re doing is going to put some more light on a body of work that our listeners don’t know shit about. We want them to know about it. That’s why we went through the proper channels to do it that way, so people who do their due diligence will see what this project sampled and want to hear that whole album. Then you pick up more money. You pick up the money ’cause we paid you to clear it and then you pick up the money from the kids who go to get the original album.

When did you guys originally record this?

We had already recorded this shit all the way back when my foot was broken. This is last year when we did this. I was on crutches. So we were originally going to put it out August 9^th, the three-year anniversary of How Fly, but we realized the publishing company might come for us. Not so much on my part, because I feel like I’m still underground, but my brother done got so far up I thought they might feel some kind of way. If it was just me, it might fly under the radar, but to protect my brother we had to do it the right way. So it just took forever to get it right. This shit had been done. The only reason we went back in the studio and you’re seeing these pieces of video of us in the studio is because we recently went back in the studio like two weeks ago out in Cali just to listen to everything ’cause you know, I don’t listen to nothing that I record. So [Wiz] was like “Come on, let’s go listen to this in the studio and make sure everything’s gravy.”

What’s it like recording a project with Wiz now, as opposed to when you guys made How Fly?

Honestly, it’s exactly the same. It’s just we got way more trees to twist up and way more for everything. It used to be we got X-amount for pizza, X-amount for bud, X-amount for drink and then we gotta pay for studio time. But now it’s like… [Laughs] We just do whatever we want. It’s really the same, but we just put the cheat code in. So now we got like infinite bullets and 30 lives.

Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y’s careers flourished after the release of their 2009 cult classic collaborative How Fly. But even as the two rappers have grown tremendously, fans have long clamored for a reunion project. After some sample-clearance-related delays, the longtime pals dropped their 2^nd collaborative effort, Live in Concert on the international stoner holiday, 4/20.

The EP’s foundation is it’s beautiful production, built off Bobby Humphrey’s 1975 jazz album Fancy Dancer. Wiz and Spitta have long had great ears for beats, and Live in Concert is rich in soulful sounds, most notably the long Ron Burgundy flute solos that find their way into nearly every song. Sultry sax pitches and timely keys makes the whole affair a jazz ensemble production. It’s a welcoming home for the duo’s lighthearted lyrics.

Throughout, Live in Concert is a celebration of life the many pleasures Wiz and Curren$y have been afforded since they first teamed up nearly four years ago. The subject matter hasn’t changed much since then and on “The Blend”, Spitta’s in full lifestyle rap mode, rapping “Sports coupe spoiler, sipping on a bottled water/ Dead serious like the fourth quarter/ Niggas can’t get this shit, it’s on back order/ Holla at the waiting list, I’m already sportin’ them.” There’s a fun moment where Spitta recalls the duo’s earliest encounters on “Revenge and Cake,” rapping “Highed up with Pittsburgh Pimpin’/Ever since my old crib, splittin’ ounces, going half on Chinese food to flights Hawaiian, a two week cruise excursion.” Since these days Curren$y’s looking back on, Wiz has certainly found more commercial success than his partner, though his rhymes seem to have gotten much lazier. Never ending raps about how tall Wiz’s money is now make Curren$y the more impressive MC on this reunion.

Clocking in at under 25 minutes, Live in Concert is on the short side but is potent nevertheless, giving fans exactly what was expected (with the exception of these flute solos). It’s predictable, enjoyable, warm-weather music that will be embraced with open arms by Jet Life and Taylor Gang fans alike. —Christian Mordi (@Mordi_TheComeUp)

After the wild global tumult of last week, the world has restored itself to order, even while Justin Bieber continues to lose his mind in Europe. At XXL, we’ve taken some time out this week to celebrate ourselves – something we truly don’t do enough – and our longevity in this “dying” industry. When news broke that fellow music/entertainment publication Vibe would discontinue publishing in print before the end of the year, we were reminded of all of our die-hard fans and readers (you!) who have kept us relevant for this many years. Looking ahead to later this year, we’ll be celebrating our 16th anniversary in the Fall, and that’s pretty awesome.

Anyway, in music news – will.i.am released his new solo project, a disco/pop/rave LP, which we celebrated with a look back at his best hip-hop beats. We also took some time to sift through the amazing amount of talent coming from Atlanta and released a new New New, featuring rappers from the A that you need to know. Also, Mac Miller returned to the spotlight with a trippy new single and music video, West Coast producer Grip Grand put out a stellar MF Doom remix EP, and Snoop Dogg Lion released his Reincarnated reggae album.

The laid-back heavy-hitter appeared on the deluxe version of Wiz’s O.N.I.F.C., which debuted at No. 1 back in December on the Billboard charts.

Wiz Khalifa stopped by DJ Whoo Kid to chat about everything that’s going on with him right now.

The conversation touched on Juicy J’s success and his forthcoming album, Stay Trippy. Earlier this year, Juicy has announced features from everyone to The Weeknd to 2 Chainz. Now, he’s going to have Justin Timberlake to appear on his latest project.

“He’s got songs with Justin Timberlake, The Weeknd. But it’s a real hood album too,” Wiz said. “You know Juicy’s projects—he’s breaking his back to give that old sound mixed with the new.”

Back in 2006, Juicy and DJ Paul collaborated with Timberlake on “Chop Me Up.” That track also featured production by Timbaland and it appeared on the widely successful FutureSex/LoveSounds.

When it comes to live performances, Joey Bada$$ won’t be put in the corner by anyone – and that includes his fellow XXL Freshman Class of 2013 member Trinidad Jame$.

In a series of Tweets that have since been deleted, the Flatbush rapper said that he would refuse to perform as an opening act on Wiz Khalifa and A$AP Rocky’s “Under the Influence” Tour. He said that while he meant the Tweets as no disrespect to Trinidad Jame$, who appears after Bada$$ on the tour flier,  he feels that he is more of an “APEX” artist.
