Macklemore

We hate to say we told you so... Nah, actually, we love it. Macklemore and his partner, Ryan Lewis, followed up his much-questioned appearance on our Freshman cover with their independent album The Heist, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200. But the Seattle-based duo wasn’t done: Their single, “Thrift Shop,” has become one of the biggest breakthrough hits of recent memory, just recently ending its eight-week reign at the No. 1 slot on the Hot 100. In March, the duo performed on “Saturday Night Live,” and their song “Wing$” was recently featured in an NBA commercial. In just a few months time, Macklemore has redefined indie-rap success.

The 2012 XXL Freshman has driven the web wild over the past few years, releasing singles to YouTube, all of which have garnered millions of views. His first proper studio album, Up & Away, was released via Alumni Music Group and peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. He's since signed to RCA Records.

After Macklemore, Atlanta rap-crooner, Future, had the second most successful year of the 2012 Freshmen. Juiced by the bow-throw- ing single “Same Damn Time,” Fu- ture’s debut album, Pluto, debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and has sold more than 280,000 copies so far, according to Nielsen. Love- sick second single, “Turn Out the Lights,” has proven to be his biggest radio hit yet, and his appearance on “Loveeeeeee Song,” from Rihanna’s blockbuster album, Unapologetic, upped his Q rating even higher. On top of all that, he worked his way into Ciara’s goodies jar. Now that’s a good year.

Roscoe Dash

Atlanta’s Roscoe Dash was one of the more accomplished 2012 Freshmen before he even made the cover, with guest features on hits like Big Sean and Kanye West’s “Marvin & Chardonnay” and Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands.” In the last year, he released a mixtape, 2.0, and continued his collabora- tion career with Fat Joe and friends’ “Pride N Joy” and Lloyd’s “Sexcapade.” But none of these efforts broke through on the same level as his earlier blockbusters. Unfortunately, the most noise Dash made in the past year was in complaining on Twitter about not getting proper credit for co-writing Wale’s “Lotus Flower Bomb” and G.O.O.D. Music’s “To the World.”

Don Trip

Sadly, Don Trip has probably had the worst year of any of the 2012 Fresh- men. The heartfelt rhymes that fueled his breakthrough single, “Letter to My Son,” showed the world his huge potential, but the Memphis rapper has yet to make good on it. He dropped a mixtape, Help Is on the Way, in October, but it made little ripple in rap’s big pond. Despite the fact that he’s been signed to Interscope for nearly three years, what was once a highly antici- pated major-label debut doesn’t seem to be coming out anytime soon.

Cleveland’s Machine Gun Kelly was a standout per- former at the Freshman showcase concert in New York last year, but since then, he’s had a hard time matching the energy level of his live act. After a summer mixtape, EST 4 Life, his debut Bad Boy/Interscope album, Lace Up, started out strong in October, bowing at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 51,000 first week sales. But it’s only sold 77,000 since then, for a not-so- terrific 128,000 copies total. Still, thanks to his raucous live show and a strong online presence, MGK still has a devoted fanbase. The video for “Champions,” the Diddy- featuring first single from his upcoming mixtape, Black Flag, has racked up more than a million YouTube view since its February launch.

Coming off his Freshman cover coronation, Hopsin followed the path laid out by his mentor, Tech N9ne, eschewing mainstream commercial opportunities in favor of building a devoted cult audience via heavy touring and a heavier web presence. In July 2012, the Los Angeles native released the fifth installment of his “Ill Mind of Hopsin” video series and garnered more than a million views in less than 24 hours—at press time had amassed nearly 25 million. He also appeared on the 2012 Cypher at the BET Hip-Hop Awards alongside 2011 Freshman Mac Miller, Mystikal, and 2013 Freshman ScHoolboy Q. He is currently preparing a new album, Knock Madness, and a collaborative EP with fellow Southern California native, drummer Travis Barker.

The great Australian hope followed up her Freshman cover turn with a series of highlights: Signing to T.I.’s Grand Hustle Records and dropping the single “Murda Bizness,” with her new boss; rapping on Steve Aoki’s and Angger Dimas’ “Beat Down,” a dance hit in the U.K., where Iggy signed a distribu- tion deal with Mercury Records; spitting a verse in the 2012 Cypher at the BET Hip-Hop Awards; making a mixtape, Trap Gold, and a free EP, Glory; touring with the likes of Rita Ora, Tyga and Kirko Bangz; and even landing a deal with presti- gious talent agency Wilhelmina Models. But with no release date for her major label debut, The New Classic—it’s unclear whether or not Grand Hustle has secured distribution for it in the U.S. yet—her stateside buzz seems to be taking a hit.

French Montana

The bear that caught an L for the vest he wore for the cover shoot had a bad 2012, but French Montana certainly did not. Riding high off the success of “Stay Schemin’,” his hit with Drake and Rick Ross, the Bronx rapper watched his debut solo single, “Pop That,” dominate NYC radio all summer, and dropped three ac- claimed mixtapes. On a break from headlining his first tour, he’s currently putting the finishing touches on his debut album, Excuse My French, due in May, with features from Ross, Snoop Dogg and more.

In an interview with HardKnock TV, Hopsin explains how he came up with “Ill Mind of Hopsin 5,” as well as comparisons to Eminem.

Exclusive in-depth interview with Hopsin at his house. Part 1 starts with Hopsin talking to Nick Huff Barili about the making of Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 and why he choose to take a different path with his lyrics. Hopsin describes how one night he couldn’t sleep so he went down to his studio and lyrics just came to him easier than ever before. Originally intended to be more like Ill Mind 4 in that he was just planning on wild ‘n out, it was through a conversation with God that he decided to take a huge career risk and try something new on Ill Mind 5. Although he was worried that fans wouldn’t connect with his new approach, Hopsin’s faith was rewarded with over a million views within a day of releasing the music video for Ill Mind of Hopsin 5 (currently at over 12 Million). Part one of the interview ends with Hopsin talking about Eminem, whom he calls his favorite MC and says that it wasn’t until Em came along that he started to care about Hip Hop. Hopsin states that if he is going to get compared to an MC he would rather it be Em who has an elaborate rhyming style that all the trending rappers right now with their simple flows that sound the same.

Columbia, MO native Stevie Stone has had a wild ride to this point. With last week's release of Rollin’ Stone, his Strange Music debut, Stone promises to take listeners on a roller coaster ride as he continues to establish himself as a rising member of the independent outfit. The former Ruthless Records MC is currently on a record-setting tour with Tech N9ne and the Strange Music family. With his career gaining momentum, XXL caught up with Stone to discuss his love of 808s, his relationship with Tech N9ne, and connecting with the fans. —Calvin Stovall (@CalvinStovall)

On Rollin’ Stone:

“It’s a rollercoaster ride, even my slow records and my serious records are gonna have that 808 and that kick up in there. But on this album, I think it’s a very full album, it’s something for everybody. This is more one of the party records, the club type records for the album. But there’s definitely different records that’s gonna put you in a different mind frame. Like I did a record called ‘My Remedy,’ and that’s just saying that when I hit the stage, music becomes my remedy and all my problems fade away. Music is my escape. It don’t matter what happens, I been in situations where I get a bad phone call like five minutes before I hit the stage on some bullshit. But soon as I hit the stage and I give it to the crowd and they give it to me back, all that shit just goes out the window… Strap on your seatbelt when you listen to it. I definitely think it’s gonna turn a lot of heads. You gonna see on the album, you can’t necessarily put Stevie Stone in a box.”
Tech N9ne is embarking on the longest hip hop tour ever.

His relationship with Tech N9ne:

“On a day-to-day basis, that’s my big brother. My first show I ever did was with Tech in the year 2000 when him and Travis first came together to form Strange Music. Since then him and I have been friends, but we’ve actually grown a brotherly bond. I used to be signed with Ruthless, and as soon as I was out of my situation, they came and got me and brought me home where I’m supposed to be. I really came full circle, my first show was with Tech, and now I’m on this tour.
“He’s been definitely a mentor to me. They showed me the blueprint, too. Before I was even signed at all. The mentality of getting out there and touching these people and meeting these fans and politicking with the fans and building that loyal fan base. I learnt that early, by watching them and how they built it from the ground up.”

On signing with Strange Music:

“We knew it was supposed to happen. When I was on Ruthless I did a tour with him, KOD tour, and his fans really adapted to me and embraced me. And me and him, we been family forever. But when I went out with them they got a chance to see me perform and how the crowd was reacting and everything. It was just a perfect fit. Like I was supposed to be on Strange Music. So as soon as we were able to make it happen, we made it happen. But we had been kicking it forever.”

On Krizz Kaliko:

“Krizz is a monster. He’s definitely a genius at what he does. I actually got him on the album, also. He’s out here politicking with these people. The fans love him. I believe they did very, very good on Billboard, and he got to number 2 on iTunes. So very, very great for an independent. The top 5 were all majors, and then you got Krizz Kalico in the mix and it’s because of the fans. It’s because of all this groundwork that Strange been doing. Getting out there, we hitting every spot. Anyone that wants to see us, we gon’ go there and we gon’ rock out. And give their best concert that they’ve ever seen. These kids love it, they soak it up.”

On Connecting with the Fans:

“Be yourself. Be honest, do music and be yourself and there’s gonna be millions of people that love that and feel it just like you do. But what they taught me was, you get out here and you touch these people. Like the meet and greets, I don’t know anyone that does a meet and greet as far as like 3-4, 3-5 every single day all these shows, the fans actually can come in and take pictures. We sign their autographs and get a chance to talk to them—that builds a connection. The fans know you. So it’s not like, they hear a song and they in love with the song. They actually know who Tech is. And what I’ve found out is the fans love that. They see you just like one of them. That’s how they become loyal fans. Touching ‘em, letting ‘em come talk to you, taking pictures with ‘em—we go to small cities. Like on this tour, we did Blackford, Idaho. We hit the big cities, too, but it’s also the other ones where everyone’s skipping over.
“It’s something that the fans will never forget. When they can be up and close and personal and talk to you. And then listen to your music, and you’re telling your life. And they feel, they can adapt, they relate to you. They love the music, but they love the person.”

It's clear by now: Wiz is a heavy supporter of the herbal essences. Well, borrowing the first four letters from Weezy's Deeweezy campaign, Wiz wins with his salute to Mary Jane. Light it up!

Behind XXL‘s Freshman Live Concert

The entire 2012 XXL Freshman Class took the Best Buy Theater stage by storm in New York City Monday night (April 9). Fans got to see Macklemore win the unfamiliar audience over, Future perform alongside his Moon Man mascot and Hopsin and Machine Gun Kelly, crowd surf, but plenty more happened behind the stage. Concertgoers walked through Best Buy’s doors roughly around 7 p.m., but XXL‘s staff arrived hours earlier to prep for the evening. Monday April 9, 2012…3:30 p.m.

As we’re arriving to the venue, we see a line of fans sitting outside. First girl in line was Ashley, who wore a Kid Ink sweatshirt. Both Ink and his manager DJ Ill Will knew her from coming to so many of Ink’s shows. The sweatshirt she wore, which Ink wore in a music video, was specially made as a replica.

Monday April 9, 2012…5:23 p.m.

A few of the XXL staffers bump into Iggy Azalea during sound check. It’s the first time some of them have seen her since the Freshman photoshoot. “Where’s Taco?” Iggy immediately asks, inquiring about the dog of Editor-In-Chief, Vanessa Satten. Most of the freshmen had gotten pretty friendly with Taco during the shoot. When hearing of Taco’s absence Iggy simulates a fit. “That’s bullshit,” she shouts, throwing her pink hoodie onto the ground repeatedly. Digital Content Director, Carl Chery, jumps in and throws Iggy’s hoodie on the floor as well.

Monday April 9, 2012…5:39 p.m.

Roscoe Dash and his crew go through sound check. Some chord not properly arranged on stage upsets Roscoe’s spazzing hypeman; who is somewhat reminiscent of Pastor Troy. “We just got off a flight right now, and I’m hungry! I don’t need y’all unprofessional…” the hypeman ranted. Roscoe, however, carried himself calmly and politely consulted with the sound crew. He apologized for his hypeman’s rowdy antics, while also presenting his team’s concerns.

Monday April 9, 2012…7:37 p.m.

As the XXL staff relaxes in one of the three dressing rooms, Kid Ink arrives with his entourage, and staffers leave the room ’cause the rapper needs to blaze.

Monday April 9, 2012…7:54 p.m.

During a meet and greet featuring Hopsin, Kid Ink and Don Trip, a fan spots DJ Alamo of Brand Nubian fame—now working with Ludacris’ Soul Headphones—and shouts, “2 Chaaaaiiinnzzz!” “Negative,” Alamo, who sports long dreads like Tit, replies.

XXL Freshman Live Tour Wraps Up in New York City

All 10 XXL 2012 Freshmen showed and proved last night (April 9) at New York’s Best Buy Theater. The final show of the 2012 XXL Freshman tour included special appearances by DJ Khaled, Tech N9ne and ScHoolBoy Q and showcased the diverse range of MCs in this year’s class.

Memphis Tennessee MC Don Trip set things off with “Letter to My Son” before jumping into “This is the Life.” LA’s Kid Ink built on Trip’s momentum with a healthy set that included his rising hit “Time of Your Life.”

The Best Buy Theater began to reach capacity as Iggy Azalea prepared to hit the stage. The Australian MC was poised as she led the crowd through energetic renditions of “Pussy” and her latest single“Murder Bizness,” sans T.I., before spending the final moments of her set hugging diehard fans in the front row.

Iggy’s set got the crowd’s blood flowing for Roscoe Dash, who sent them into a frenzy by performing a medley of his most memorable hooks. “No Hands” and “All the Way Turnt Up” got love, but it was Big Sean’s “Marvin Gaye & Chardonnay” that really got fans turnt up.

Seattle’s Macklemore formally introduced himself to NYC with a high-octane set that included a live trumpet. The “Otherside” MC had the foreign crowd on his side by the end of the set thanks to his stage presence and the help of phenomenal trumpeter Owour Arunga.

Next up was the white-eyed Hopsin, rocking his distinct contact lenses, who performed the entirety of “Sag my Pants” while crowd-surfing on the Best Buy audience. The room exploded when Hop brought out the evening’s first surprise guest, Tech N9Ne, to perform “Am I A Psycho?” off of Tech’s All 6’s and 7’s. It was the first time the two shared a stage together.

Speaking of eccentric emcees, Danny Brown took the stage next in a Tiger-inspired, ruler-looking track suit, and brought out a special guest of his own. Newly-signed Interscope recording artist Schoolboy Q took the stage to perform “Hands On The Wheel,” before Danny closed his set with “Blunt After Blunt,” from his 2011 mixtape, XXX.

Accompanied by a dancing Moon man, Future was up next, performing club smashes “Tony Montana,” “Ain’t No Way Around It,” “Racks,” and “Same Damn Time.” The Atlanta rapper closed out performing his hooks off of Rick Ross’s “Ring Ring,” and Rocko’s “Squares Out Your Circle.”

With an introduction from host Cipha Sounds, New York’s own French Montana took the stage, and in typical Frenchie fashion flooded it with an entourage of dozens. Wearing a ski mask, the Bad Boy signee launched into hits “Choppa Choppa Down,” “Call It Dat,” and “Shot Caller.” Amongst his entourage were Red Café and DJ Khaled, who performed “All I Do Is Win,” and “I’m On One,” respectively. Montana closed out his set with “Stay Schemin.”

Chants of “MGK” had been filling the theater all night and when Machine Gun Kelly finally appeared, the crowd erupted. With the backing of a live drummer, MGK launched into “LTFU” and “Invincible.” He even performed a cover of Blink 182’s “What’s My Age Again,” bringing a couple of female fans —and one shirtless male fan with an exposed Lace Up tattoo on his chest— onstage to share in the moment. After some stage diving of his own, MGK closed out the night with “Wild Boy.”

The 2012 XXL Freshman frenzy isn’t over quite yet.

Today at 3 p.m., the 2012 XXL Freshmen mixtape, hosted by DJ Whoo Kid, Diddy and T.I., will drop exclusively on XXLMag.com. This is the third year in a row that Whoo Kid has hosted the release, which includes music from each of the ten artists featured on this year’s cover (on stands now), as well as some special features.

A few hours after the tape drops, each member of this year’s class—Danny Brown, Don Trip, French Montana, Future, Hopsin, Iggy Azalea, Kid Ink, Machine Gun Kelly, Macklemore and Roscoe Dash—will be converging on New York City’s Times Square for the third annual Freshman Live Concert, hosted by Hot 97. The show will be rounding out this year’s Monster Energy Outbreak Tour Presents XXL Freshman Live, which also included dates in Austin, TX at SXSW, as well as in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Atlanta. A result of the authentic and soulful sound, though, were that the song didn’t pick up as much as K.R.I.T. and the label probably would have liked, failing to crack Billboard.

The West held it down last night (March 27) at San Francisco’s Regency Ballroom for XXL‘s Freshman Live showcase. Headlined by acts like current 2012 Freshman Hopsin and last year’s alumni Kendrick Lamar, the XXL-stamped artists delivered quite the show at the multi-level venue.

As the energetic lyricist he is, Hopsin kicked the night off by dishing out his arsenal of potent tracks including the brash “Illmind of Hopsin 4,” the cheeky “Baby’s Daddy,” and the scathing “Kill Her”—the latter during which he commanded the packed house to chant, “Fuck Ruthless Records!”

But the momentum in the room hoisted-up another level once Compton star Kendrick Lamar hit the stage.

“Fire burning inside my eyes, this the music that saved my life/Y’all be calling it hip-hop, I be calling it hypnotize,” he spat while entering with Section.80’s gripping opener “Fuck Your Ethnicity.” “Don’t mistake me for no fuckin’ rapper/They sit backstage and hide behind them fuckin’ cameras/I mosh pit/Had a microphone and I tossed it/Had a brain, then I lost it.”

After seguing into the breezy “Hol’ Up”—another cut off the critically-acclaimed 2010 project— K. Dot took things back a bit as he appeased long-time fans with performances of select fan-favorites “P&P,” “She Needs Me,” “Cut You Off,” and the rousing “Michael Jordan,” which he dedicated to the late Trayvon Martin, howling “There will be fucking justice.”

Needless to say, the TDE rhymer had the crowd at the palm of his hands. “KENDRICK, KENDRICK,” chanted fans who packed the entire venue while devotedly hanging on to the rapper’s every word.

“Let me tell you what my Pops once told me,” he roared. “Be spiteful than a motherfucka,’” Kendrick bellowed before the instrumental to “The Spiteful Chant” clamored throughout the house. Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any more exciting, KL hurled more tricks up his sleeves as he slipped into joints like the tranquilizing “A.D.H.D.”, “Blow My High (Members Only),” “Rigamortus,” “Chapter Six,” and the atmospheric “HiiPower.”

As the night drew to a close, K. Dot finished things off with a first-ever performance of his Gunplay-assisted “Cartoons & Cereal;” the rapper said it best with his last verse.

“Everybody wanna know my life/How did I make it past yours/Well let me tell you like this/I’ve been running this shit since I asked for it.”

Both Hopsin and Kendrick put on for the left coast’s Bay Area. The XXL Freshmen Live tour’s next stop will be in Atlanta, GA on April 1^st featuring performances from 2008 Freshman Wale and current 2012 class members Don Trip and Roscoe Dash. Get your tickets here. —Ralph Bristout
