Future says that Lil Wayne’s controversial Emmett Till lyric has ultimately had a positive effect on the community.

In a recent interview with Power 106, the Freebandz singer discussed the remix of his song “Karate Chop,” in which Lil Wayne raps that he, “beats the pu**y up like Emmett Till.” Although Future says the situation surrounding the lyric was unfortunate, he believes Weezy’s notorious rhyme has ultimately raised awareness about Till’s murder.

“We did the song with great intentions – I know he did the verse for the art – but speaking on the situation, I can’t speak on it,” he said. “I never thought it was going to get so much attention, but I think overall, the whole situation, he did bring light in a positive way to what happened. Even though [Emmett Till's family] probably thought it was negative, he brought positive energy to the situation because a lot of people don’t even know [who Emmett Till was] – my dad didn’t even know who Emmett was, he thought I was talking about Emmett Smith. I’m talking a lot of that are people around me, credible people, that should be like, ‘Man, you don’t even know who Emmett Till is?’ He raised awareness to people who didn’t even know Emmett Till.”

Earlier this month, it was announced that Mountain Dew dropped Lil Wayne as a sponsor in response to the controversy surrounding the lyric.

The already widely popular song, that’s already been remixed, gets “RichMix” this time.
The already widely popular song, that’s already been remixed, gets “RichMix” this time. Future gets Rick Ross, Birdman, and French Montana for the remix to “Karate Chop.” The trio bring their own swag to the song. Rich Ross talks about his hustle and his products, Birdman comes in flexin’, and French ends the song telling you how he is a shot caller. I have a feeling this is probably not going to be the last remix of this song. Listen to the track below.

DJ Scream was introduced to Doe B, Big Kuntry King and a few newer members in the crew. Tip listed out some of the features on the tape, and then shared how the tape was formed.

“It was a spontaneous idea that we all just collectively came together and just said one day, ‘Hey man.’ We were just in the studio just playing records. ‘Man, we got a bunch of shit. Let’s put this shit out, man.’ And everybody look at me like, ‘Damn, why isn’t this shit out?’,” he recalls. “‘You sure right man.’ The next day, we said we gonna do a motherfucking project and there it is. Two weeks later. It’s done.”

Tip also spoke on his upcoming tour with Lil Wayne and French Montana called “America’s Most Wanted.” Initially, Future was supposed to be on the road, but Tip says 2 Chainz replaced him.

“No, it ain’t Future. Me and Tune for damn sure,” he said. “It was Future and something happened. Future pulled. He disassociated himself from the tour for whatever reason. It’s still love.”

Nah, actually, we love it. Macklemore and his partner, Ryan Lewis, followed up his much-questioned appearance on our Freshman cover with their independent album The Heist, which debuted
at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200. But the Seattle-based duo wasn’t done: Their single, “Thrift Shop,” has become one of the biggest breakthrough hits of recent memory, just recently ending its eight-week reign at the No. 1 slot on the Hot 100. In March, the duo performed on “Saturday Night Live,” and their song “Wing$” was recently featured in an NBA commercial. In just a few months time, Macklemore has redefined indie-rap success.

danny_brown_1

Danny Brown

"A rack and a zip (of weed)."

kid_ink_2

Kid Ink

The 2012 XXL Freshman has driven the web wild over the past few years, releasing singles to YouTube, all of which have garnered millions of views. His first proper studio album, Up & Away, was released via Alumni Music Group and peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. He's since signed to RCA Records.

Future-Child

Future

After Macklemore, Atlanta rap-crooner, Future, had the second most successful year of the 2012 Freshmen. Juiced by the bow-throw- ing single “Same Damn Time,” Fu- ture’s debut album, Pluto, debuted at No. 8 on the Billboard 200, and has sold more than 280,000 copies so far, according to Nielsen. Love- sick second single, “Turn Out the Lights,” has proven to be his biggest radio hit yet, and his appearance on “Loveeeeeee Song,” from Rihanna’s blockbuster album, Unapologetic, upped his Q rating even higher. On top of all that, he worked his way into Ciara’s goodies jar. Now that’s a good year.

roscoe_dash_20

Roscoe Dash

Atlanta’s Roscoe Dash was one of the more accomplished 2012 Freshmen before he even made the cover, with guest features on hits like Big Sean and Kanye West’s “Marvin & Chardonnay” and Waka Flocka Flame’s “No Hands.” In the last year, he released a mixtape, 2.0, and continued his collabora- tion career with Fat Joe and friends’ “Pride N Joy” and Lloyd’s “Sexcapade.” But none of these efforts broke through on the same level as his earlier blockbusters. Unfortunately, the most noise Dash made in the past year was in complaining on Twitter about not getting proper credit for co-writing Wale’s “Lotus Flower Bomb” and G.O.O.D. Music’s “To the World.”

013112_don_6673_1aa

Don Trip

Sadly, Don Trip has probably had the worst year of any of the 2012 Fresh- men. The heartfelt rhymes that fueled his breakthrough single, “Letter to My Son,” showed the world his huge potential, but the Memphis rapper has yet to make good on it. He dropped a mixtape, Help Is on the Way, in October, but it made little ripple in rap’s big pond. Despite the fact that he’s been signed to Interscope for nearly three years, what was once a highly antici- pated major-label debut doesn’t seem to be coming out anytime soon.

MGK_play_5

MGK

Cleveland’s Machine Gun Kelly was a standout per- former at the Freshman showcase concert in New York last year, but since then, he’s had a hard time matching the energy level of his live act. After a summer mixtape, EST 4 Life, his debut Bad Boy/Interscope album, Lace Up, started out strong in October, bowing at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 51,000 first week sales. But it’s only sold 77,000 since then, for a not-so- terrific 128,000 copies total. Still, thanks to his raucous live show and a strong online presence, MGK still has a devoted fanbase. The video for “Champions,” the Diddy- featuring first single from his upcoming mixtape, Black Flag, has racked up more than a million YouTube view since its February launch.

Hopsin_by_Trevor_Traynora

Hopsin

Coming off his Freshman cover coronation, Hopsin followed the path laid out by his mentor, Tech N9ne, eschewing mainstream commercial opportunities in favor of building a devoted cult audience via heavy touring and a heavier web presence. In July 2012, the Los Angeles native released the fifth installment of his “Ill Mind of Hopsin” video series and garnered more than a million views in less than 24 hours—at press time had amassed nearly 25 million. He also appeared on the 2012 Cypher at the BET Hip-Hop Awards alongside 2011 Freshman Mac Miller, Mystikal, and 2013 Freshman ScHoolboy Q.
Mountain Dew has a second controversy with a rapper this week.

TMZ reports that PepsiCo has dropped Lil Wayne as a spokesperson over his reference to Emmett Till on the remix to Future’s “Karate Chop.” In the song, Wayne raps that he “beat that pussy up like Emmett Till.” The Till family stated in April that they would go after Lil Wayne’s sponsors.

There is no word whether PepsiCo will stop running its Mountain Dew ads featuring Weezy.

Even though the song dates back to February of this year, Lil Wayne recently issued an apology to the family of Till for the lyric. However, Till’s family formally rejected his apology, saying, “While it’s commendable that he has vowed to respect the legacy of Emmett Till and his memory to ‘not use or reference Emmett Till or the Till family in his music,’ this statement falls short of an apology, as none is mentioned.”

Earlier this week, Mountain Dew pulled a commercial directed by Tyler, the Creator after it was accused of being racist.

April was a bountiful month for mixtapes and new music. On the album front, Kid Cudi put out his Indicud LP, Ghostface teamed up with Adrian Younge for Twelve Reasons to Die, and the legendary R.A. the Rugged Man put out his stellar Legends Never Die LP. The real musical highlights of the month, though, came in free mixtapes from a truly diverse group of artists leading the way for the new underground.

While J. Cole continued to show his gratitude for his diehard fans with the second installment of his Truly Yours mixtape series, emerging Southern icon Big K.R.I.T. finally released his King Remembered In Time tape, and young Chicago standout Chance The Rapper put out an instant classic with his highly-anticipated Acid Rap. The mixtape circuit also saw releases from MMG young’n Rockie Fresh, and a comeback project from sexy songstress Cassie, who reinvented herself and her sound on the new RockaByeBaby.

Check out our breakdown of April’s best mixtapes.
So far, we’ve heard Wiz Khalifa and A$AP Rocky jump on the Childish Major-produced track. Much like we’ve heard before, Chainz owns the instrumental with boasts about foreign cars, drugs and more. He’s also swaging on the beat like he’s “flamboyant.” Check it out below.

At some point in the year since the release of Pluto, Future stopped releasing mixtapes like he used to. His October-scheduled Super Future/Fire Marshall Future mixtape never saw the light of day, or maybe it was just repackaged as the Freebandz collective F.B.G.:The Movie mixtape from the top of this year. “At this point, they see every Future song as capital” said Metro Boomin’, producer of “Karate Chop”, in an interview with this publication earlier this year. “So the label isn’t really feeling him putting out 20 free songs.” If there’s any truth to Metro’s seemingly astute observation, then Future’s certainly done his best to con the powers that be by releasing music regularly under the guise of Freebandz compilations and various Atlanta DJ’s projects. So Black Woodstock is a DJ Esco mixtape, but really it’s a reason to give us seven new Future songs and a handful from his cohorts.

Future gets the heavy lifting out of the way early on Black Woodstock. The tape’s leadoff, “Keys”, sees Future tiptoeing through a beat that’s equally as weird as “Karate Chop” and slightly less fun. “We Made Our Own,” arguably a rip-off of Rick Ross’ “911”, also dabbles in the “good enough” territory, though none of the songs here really reach the “Karate Chop” or “Mark McGwire” levels of F.B.G.: The Movie. “Rehab (Amy Winehouse)” is a standout if you’re into the notoriously overlooked vulnerable and concerned side of Future he showcased on Pluto sleeper “Permanent Scar.”

As far as the sidekicks go, Future’s actually done pretty well for himself. 19-year-old Slice 9 is the most developed and polished of the bunch, showing radio instincts on “Young Nigga Problems,” his lone appearance on Black Woodstock. Future’s brother Casino plays a supporting role on several tracks that’s impressive enough and Atlanta radio DJ turned rapper Stuey Rock might have a legitimate regional hit on his hands with the Future-assisted “Blow Them Bands.” It’s a little heavy on the Stuey Rock and a little light on Future, but has Atlanta airwaves written all over it, especially if he’s able to continue playing his own music on the radio.

“Karate Chop” had humble beginnings on DJ Spinz and Pretty Boy Tank’s We Are The Radio Vol. 6 and there’s a handful of other Future game changers that first saw the light of day on releases such as these (The response from “No Love” off Spinz’ HBG 2 tape last month prompted Future to announce he’d be shooting a video for the record). Unfortunately, there really aren’t any songs of that caliber to be found here. Future’s at a point now where any new music warrants a great deal of excitement, so Black Woodstock’s mediocrity comes as a bit of a letdown. The thing is though, Future’s mediocre is still more engaging than a lot of people’s best.—Neil Martinez-Belkin (@Neil_MB)
