There have been a lot cliché trends in rap—New Jack Swing, the Shiny suit, “Molly” rap—and fortunately, most have died off as quickly as they became popular. But one thing that’s remained constant throughout hip-hop history is most rappers’ inability to strike a normal pose on camera. Whether it’s a music video, an album cover or even a magazine spread, nearly every rapper relies on a handful of overused poses.

Now, XXL decided to take a lot at 25 artists doing five of the most overused poses in hip-hop—the Gun Hands, the Jesus Pose, the Crouch, the Boxer’s Stance and the Prayer Hands.

Just days after releasing his long-awaited debut Excuse My French, Bad Boy rhymer French Montana went right back to work, signing GBE affiliate and recent solo standout Lil Durk to his Coke Boys imprint. In an Instagram photo posted by Def Jam’s newly-promoted Executive VP, Shawn “Pecas” Costner, fans got a glimpse of Durk standing beside French and known associate Chinx Drugz.

At just 20 years old, Durk has come into his own as a representer of the burgeoning Chicago scene alongside GBE teammates like Lil Reese and Chief Keef off the strength of his recent single “Dis Ain’t What U Want,” and his move to align himself with French’s Coke Boys is equal parts a publicity stunt and a coalition with a close friend. Much like Keef’s recent signing with Gucci Mane’s 1017 Brick Squad label, Durk has taken to partnering with a more established rapper while continuing to build his own brand.

During a recent trip to NYC, Durk stopped by the XXL offices to discuss his signing, what to expect from his upcoming DJ Drama-helmed mixtape and what’s really going on in Chiraq.

XXL: Tell me about the mixtape.

Lil Durk: It’s called Signed To The Streets and it’s hosted by DJ Drama. It’s gonna drop in the middle of June and I got a lot of crazy songs on there, a lot of features. I like to keep it real. I like real rap. Sometimes I play around with the futuristic and all that but I like real rap, something you can relate too.

What do you mean by “real rap”?

What people are going through today, what I’m going through, what I’m living. People can relate to other people and how they living. I’m not talking about no jumping in Ferraris.

Signed To The Streets will be your fourth mixtape. After it comes out, what’s the next step?

Just keep putting out music. Like how Future did it, he kept putting out mixtapes and building his buzz, and that’s what I’m going to do. I ain’t really thinking about no album right now because why would you put out an album when you’re not nationwide? Why even think about an album?

When you and some of the GBE guys shout out Chicago you call it Chiraq. What’s that about?

You know how Iraq is, so we just put it together. What’s going on in Chicago is the same thing that’s going on in Iraq.

Do you see yourself as one of the main representers of the Chi’s hip-hop scene?

Yea, most definitely. I get a lot of respect and response with everything I do so I know that they watching, and if I wasn’t important in Chicago, they wouldn’t be watching.

So it seems like you’ve distanced yourself a little from the other GBE guys and have grown more as your own artist and brand. What’s your relationship with them like now?

Everybody’s family, self made. [But] you gotta build your own face at the end. You going to have to put your own money in your pocket. I’m my own boss, I don’t wait on anybody, so I decided to do me. Get my own money and live it up.

How is it living in Chicago?

Living there, I don’t really see it from the outside looking in. But by me growing up in Chicago, I’m used to it. So it’s violence, but for the outside looking in it’s like, “I’m not going there.” And I just ask, “Why?” You know?

Do you see yourself staying there?

If I find a good neighborhood I can live in, then that’s what I’ma do.

You just got signed to Coke Boys. Congrats. What’s your relationship with French Montana?

That’s my homie, he’s like a big brother to me. He talks to me every day, I call him every day and talk about everything music-wise.

How did you two meet?

Actually we was just politicking through Twitter, then I came up here to get some Slowbucks gear. I started working with Slowbucks, then they introduced me to him.

What advice has French given you?

To stay at it and keep your style, and don’t try to follow other people’s footsteps.

How did he convince you to sign with him?

He called me and motivated me. He told me, like, “I’m not forcing you, but when you ready to move just holla at me.” The music and the stuff I’m doing is good, but sometimes you feel like you’re at a standstill and you just need that representative. Like you got to get embraced by somebody, ’cause at the end of the day it’s all about publicity. You’re going to need it, I don’t care who you are.

What French Montana has always lacked in technical ability, he’s made up for with personality. French is a stone cold charmer; a Waka Flocka Flame with less energy in many ways. Like Waka, his approach to music is similar to that of a high school football jock who decides he can do anything—act in plays, do well academically, and invevitably, rap— so he does it all in an earnest and sincere way. Even when it’s ridiculous, he’s still going for it. French has been able to stick around all these years because he’s a likable guy who everybody (from Raekwon to Nicki Minaj to The Weeknd, all of whom appear here) wants to hang out with, even if he isn’t really breaking any new ground.

But, none of this is to say Excuse My French isn’t good. As an artist, he’s got swag to spare and enough of a presence to carry songs on his own (a bizarre recurring argument that doesn’t stick). He’s also got a knack for beat selection, however the absence of French’s longtime producer Harry Fraud on the album is confusing. Standouts include the gritty banger “Marble Floors,” swag anthem “Ballin’ Out” and the album’s darkest and most introspective track “Gifted.” The Max B-featuring “Once In A While” is an epic opener, though it’s a high-point that sets up listeners for an experience French can’t quite deliver on for the remaining 17 tracks. But to be fair, maintaining such a high energy level is an impossible feat – how do you build to anything when your entire record is one long climax?

For every artistic, deep-thinking rhymer in hip-hop, you need someone like French Montana, who can balance out the ratchet equilibrium of the genre, so taken at face value—as a fun record filled with turn-up anthems—Excuse My French is a good album, possibly the best one the Coke Boy could make. There’s enough big boasts and big beats here to carry French’s charm, which is really all you could ask for with a debut LP from the Bad Boy. —Dan Buyanovsky

French Montana belted out his signature “HAAAHNNN” from backstage of his Webster Hall Excuse My French album release party at approximately 1:56 a.m. This perfect climactic break followed the anticipation that mounted just moments before: DJs Funk Flex and Bobby Trends scrambling with (seemingly) late playlists, entourages staking their territories on stage and a general social media quiet storm brewing. Hot 97 had the task of keeping the packed crowd entertained for three hours prior, including a Summer Jam tickets dance contest hosted by Cipha Sounds that ended with a winning split and a hand-stand.

Stepping up to the stage, French Montana found himself next to his Bad Boy Boss, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Introducing the evening as a “Celebration of a NY nigga,” Diddy acted as Montanas’s hypeman while making it rain on the crowd for the heavily rotated single “Aint Worried About Nothin.”

Following the second track, “9000 Watts,” with Coke Boys affiliate Chinx Drugz, French took a minute to pay homage to the special day of his album release: “Today is a real special day,” Montana noted. “Happy birthday to my nigga Max B; happy birthday to my nigga Biggie Smalls; and happy birthday to me when my album came out in the game, nigga!”

The concert continued as a true hip-hop royalty celebration. First up in surprises was Swizz Beatz. He made his way to the top of the stage to congratulate the Coke Boy before singing along to his produced Jay-Z shocker, “Open Letter,” and Busta Rhymes’ “Stop The Party.”

Moving things along for the “bad bitches in the building,” Montana introduced Wale to his audience of devoted fans for a treatment of “Bad.” Uncle Murda came out off the strength of his and French’s collab, “Money Work.” And Fat Joe followed suit showing support after French assisted him with snippets of “Lean Back” and “My Lifestyle.” Before stating why the two had more in common than just love for the Bronx, French stated: “When I was down and out, this one of the niggas that helped me out.”

Raekwon (The Chef) made an appearance with “Ice Cream” and their latest collab, “We Go Where Ever We Want,” featuring Ne-Yo. Hit songs “Pop That,” “Ocho Cinco” and “Paranoid” wrapped up the successful night while Bad Boy’s Andre Harrell presented French Montana with a glass-encased Platinum Plaque for “Pop That.” One million records sold. Best birthday, ever? —Jasmine “Jazzi” Johnson (@bubbleMAMI)
