The set of the “Love and Hip-Hop: New York” reunion show looked more like a WWE cage match yesterday, as Joe Budden and Consequence exchanged blows two times in the same night.

The on-going beef between the two emcees spilled over into yesterday’s taping of the show’s reunion episode when Cons reportedly “smacked the shit” out of Budden in response to last month’s heated exchange at Hot 97′s offices. The Slaughterhouse rapper rebuked the claims, saying the former G.O.O.D. Music rapper sucker-punched him from behind while on a smoke break with ex-girlfriend Tahiry Jose.

Budden went on to say that Tahiry even managed to land a punch on Consequence before he could run away.

Just Smacked The SHIT outta @joebudden at the #LHHReunion Everybody have a Nice Day…. #QueensAllDay

Tensions between the two didn’t end there, as Budden apparently made good on his promise to Angie Martinez to “go in the bathroom” and shoot the fair one with Consequence. After shooting wrapped, Budden intimated on Twitter that he and Cons duked it out for second time that night.

Consequence later responded to Budden’s taunts, saying that he won’t be pressing charges against the New Jersey rapper because, “Tahiry hit me harder” than Budden.

As previously mentioned, the feud began at Hot 97 after Budden approached Consequence over alleged comments that he and his girlfriend Jen the Pen made about Budden on the show.

Let’s make it clear: Azealia Banks didn’t start this Twitter feud. Although the Harlemite is known for her Twitter spats against the likes of Kreayshawn and Jim Jones, it seems like the latest artist Angel Haze interpreted one of her tweets as a subliminal shot.

Banks tweeted earlier today that rappers who aren’t originally from NY shouldn’t claim the city. “Seriously, if you were not born and raised in NY…. DON’T CLAIM NY. YOU ARE NOT A NEW YORKER.” This set off Haze who fired a few scathing tweets at Banks, specifically calling her a “charcoal skinned bitch.”

While Haze immediately deleted her tweets, Banks has kept a few of them on her timeline. You can check out screenshots of the exchange below.

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

Saigon’s recent admission that he would like to make Rick Ross and 2 Chainz eat a knuckle sandwich because he deems their content detrimental to youth during a recent interview with The Breakfast Club caught a lot of people off guard. Now the rapper is taking back what he said, saying he had ulterior motives for his statements. Sai recently took to Facebook to explain the method behind his brow-raising comments.

“I say them things on purpose,” he wrote. “If U notice I say people names at the end of the interview. In my mind Im thinking I just dropped a deep interview but I have to say some super ignorant shit to bring people to even watch it so I said a name or 2… I just been doing this for a while and I understand how the Hip Hop media works..I hope those 2 guys understand it was simply a strategy and not personal at all.. Though I DONT agree with their content. I do not want to cause them any harm or see them harmed.”

However, some damage seems to already be done. MMG rapper Gunplay has already lashed out at the NY spitter. “I dare you to do that shit.” he warned in an interview with hiphopwired.com. “To each his own, if that’s how he feel… try to punch him in the face.”

Saigon later took to Twitter for his final say on the matter, tweeting, “That real street Beef shit is right up my alley but would defeat the whole purpose of what Im trying to accomplish. I dont wanna hurt no one.”

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

The tension between Shyne and Game doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. Then again, it could all be over by tomorrow. When Shyne expressed his dissatisfaction with Kendrick Lamar’s debut LP it ruffled feathers on the West Coast, most notably Game’s who had some harsh words for Moses Levi.

The former Bad Boy rapper recently spoke with Streetkode.com and HomegrownRadio to debunk any rumors that he is no longer welcome in Cali and to address the situation with Game. “I’m certified worldwide. I don’t mob or thug on my block. I’m not local. I’m worldwide,” said Shyne via phone. “Wherever I go, I get the red carpet rolled out for me because I been about it. A lot of these dude’s that’s talking ain’t never did nothing.”

As far as the tension between him and Game, Po said he has love for Chuck but won’t take disrespect. “That’s my son. I got love for him. I always have love for him. I’m proud of him because he’s something that I helped create. …He studied me, and he aspired to be like me. …I always have love for him because he never fronted. He always paid homage to me.”

Shyne insisted that Game needs to reach out to him to resolve the situation. “I’m the big homie,” he added. “I’m the big brother. He got to reach out to me. He was the one who talked reckless. It’s a way to handle things.”

The deported rapper doesn’t expect the situation to escalate. “From what I seen and what I heard, we moving on as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

Not sure if Shyne heard Game’s latest diss before this interview. Time will tell. Stay tuned.

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

While initial reports claimed Rick Ross was involved in a confrontation with Young Jeezy at the backstage of the BET’s 2012 Hip-Hop Awards in Atlanta, further rumors have arisen stating 50 Cent’s camp was also in the midst of a scuffle against members of the Maybach Music Group.

Allegedly, Gunplay of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group had a fist fight with members of 50 Cent’s entourage. Rumors are stating that members of G-Unit have injured Ross’ protégé, with some claiming 50 was actually tangled in the brawl. Different sources are making alleged claims, with few stating that Gunplay was visibly wounded, and has been handcuffed by security guards.

While the scuffle was occurring, various members of the rap community including A Tribe Called Quest, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, and former foes 50 Cent and Fat Joe were part of the tribute to commemorate the legacy of the recently passed music industry executive Chris Lighty.

Regarding the brawl between Rick Ross and Young Jeezy, New York DJ Funkmaster Flex tweeted, “Jeezy and Rick Ross just had words backstage!! Pushing and shoving!!!” He later added, “Shots fired in parking lot!!! Gunman arrested!!! Back to the show and Club later!!!”

Atlanta’s DJ Drama, immediately took to his radio show to broadcast what he witnessed at the awards show, “Some words got exchanged, heard some what’s ups, I’ve seen the security getting a little hostile, a lot of big men started pushing and shoving, some interesting conflict between Ross and Jeezy, and it just went bad!”

The story is still developing, and as of press time no official statements were given from either the rap camps or the authorities. —Jaeki Cho (@JaekiCho)

When Shyne completed his 10-year prison sentence in 2009 for his role in the 1999 Club New York shooting, it still appeared as if he would never be able to see eye-to-eye with his former boss Diddy again. All that changed, however, when the former Bad Boy rap star reached a truce with Diddy back in March during Fashion Week in Paris. Although the truce and mere sight of Diddy and Shyne sitting side by side sent shockwaves through hip-hop, their truce was short-lived. That’s because, in August, Shyne released a diss song aimed at Diddy called, “You’re Welcome.” He would go on to tell hip-hop journalist Miss Info that he released the track because Diddy didn’t own up to his promises, which included helping him get back his US-Visa to return to the United States.

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.37.40 AM

Benzino "Pull Your Skirt Up" (2003)

Something about Eminem really rubbed Benzino the wrong way and so he released a string of diss tracks aimed at Shady, most notably “Pull Your Skirt Up,” where he made bizarre remarks about slapping Eminem’s mother and chalked his career up to “industry excitement.” He also didn’t win over his hometown of Boston with the record, saying fuck Larry Bird as a part of the diss. He also confessed “If you ask me, you really not that nice, you’re overrated.” The problem of course was that nobody had actually asked Benzino. Shady’s response, “Nail in the Coffin”, was about as disparaging as a diss record can be so Zino at least deserves credit for prompting it.

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.35.30 AM

Jay-Z “Brooklyn High” (2006)

Jay-Z’s “Brooookyln” ad-lib had nothing on Jimmy’s “Ballin” and for a Jay-Z diss track, “Brooklyn High” was a surprising let down. “We Fly High” was the biggest song of the year, making its way into NFL touchdown celebrations, and Jay’s version sounded more like a half-assed remix then a diss to be reckoned with.

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.48.16 AM

Max B “Umma Do Me” (2008)

Wavie Crockett’s several attempts at dissing the Dipset capo never materialized into anything substantial, though Max’s gripes were certainly justified. Jimmy allegedly screwed Max out of his publishing rights in exchange for bail money when Biggavelli caught a murder charge in 2006. Perhaps it was Max B favoring his signature melodic crooning instead of heavy handed punch lines that resulted in his string of less than impactful diss tracks. On it, Drake fired subliminal shots toward Common to which the Chi-town rhyme slinger retorted with his own verse over the same instrumental. (The rumored friction between them was Serena Williams, the tennis superstar, who publicly dated Common, before being seen with Drake). On it, Com referred to Drizzy as “sweet,” a “bitch” and “Canada Dry.” It wasn’t as if the rhymes were lackluster. It’s more that nobody believed a true beef between these two. Rappers and even rap fans laughed it off for the most part. The two MCs would later squash their beef.

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.39.20 AM

Canibus "J. But with all due respect, it’s been a long time since fans embraced Canibus as that same guy. Therefore coming out and dissing J. Cole, easily regarded as one rap’s best lyricists today, threw hip-hop for a loop. According to Canibus, he respected the way Cole shouted him out as a heavy influence in past interviews, but didn’t appreciate not featuring the grizzled veteran on a track together. “You said my name so much they think you’re being honest/It’s more than that, we could’ve recorded the track/You could give me a stack for a verse just like that,” ’Bus rhymed on “J. Clone.” Forreal, man? Come on, son! Nobody’s trying to hear that. Less than 48 hours removed from issuing the diss track, Canibus apologized.

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.43.12 AM

Havoc "Separated" (2012)

Mobb Deep had an album called, Hell on Earth, back in 1996. What the diss track coincidentally arrived in the wheelhouse of Diggy also releasing his debut album, Unexpected Arrival, which only moved 21,000 units its first week. Fans could deem the diss track as a way for Diggy to generate much-needed buzz for his album. Although, Cole and Diggy later squashed their beef, they re-hashed it earlier this month, with Dig answering a Cole jab with another whole diss record, this one called, “Fall Down.”

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.41.03 AM

J. Soon thereafter, the two squashed their beef and all was good…until Cole decided to re-open the verbal back and forth via a freestyle during Kendrick Lamar’s show. “Picture me hating on a young nigga with talent/Album flopped, but it’s cool/He caked out on his allowance,” Cole spit on stage in North Carolina earlier this month. That led to Diggy recording another diss track aimed at Cole in “Fall Down.” Cole, whose Cole World: The Sideline Story album, hit the No. 1 spot on the charts last year and who is the older out the two, should have just let this beef die when it started. He has a good thing going with his career and didn’t need to re-open their dispute. Please don’t respond to Diggy’s track. Enough’s enough.

Screen shot 2012-09-24 at 11.36.45 AM

Jay-Z “Supa Ugly” (2001)

Standing on its own, “Supa Ugly” is a pretty cutting diss. However, in the greater context of the Jay-Z-Nas feud, it’s a fail, serving as a disappointing follow up to arguably the two greatest diss songs of all time, “The Takeover”, and”Ether.” Despite being a graphic and particularly vulgar account of Jay’s affair with the mother of Nas’ child, it didn’t match the impact of “Ether”, leading to the overriding opinion that Nas had won the historic battle.

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

50 Cent has made his displeasure about the work ethic of Lloyd Banks and Tony Yayo clear in the past few months.

The two G-Unit members have remained relatively silent, until Saturday (August 11), when it seemed like Yayo had finally had enough.

“Who started Gunit me that’s who,” Yayo tweeted.

Former G-Unit member, Game, caught wind of the tweet and took the opportunity to poke fun at Yayo.

“uh oh, 50 gone cut off yo health benefits & stop ya Vitamin water shipments u keep it up lol,” Game wrote on his Twitter that same day, after re-tweeting Yayo’s statement.

But, when websites and blogs were beginning to bubble with the news that Yayo was sending a subliminal shot at ’Fif, the Real Talk of New York set the record straight the next day.

“Why would I blow shots at 50 the media want see Gunit fail so bad we won to much in front of niggas everybody running with our format,” he continued.

Perhaps 50’s prior statements about him and Banks prompted him to set the record straight.

After telling Big Boy’s Neighborhood that his fellow G-Unit members “need to get themselves together” early last month, 50 recently told XXL that he thinks he has disabled Banks and Yayo.

“I did so much for them that they don’t have a continuous work ethic,” 50 offered.

Although the G-Unit general acknowledged that Banks and Yayo both dropped mixtapes—Banks with V6 and Yayo with Sex, Drugs & Hip-Hop—he was mystified that they didn’t accompany their tracks with videos to complement them.

“They got both of those tapes out there, but did you see any visuals? Anything?” 50 said. “There’s certain things that the new guy is doing to create momentum or energy. They just sit there and wait. When someone works for you, you have the habit of dealing with things by not dealing with them. You may get in the regimen of coming over and doing it for them.

“Dropping mixtapes…that was my ’02 strategy,” he added. “That’s 2002 marketing. That’s old. You did nothing if you did that. If you’re going to just wing it and drop a mixtape…pick the highlights that people like most and shoot ‘em. Go shoot the video.”—Mark Lelinwalla

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

Last year, Young Jeezy voiced his opinion about being over the beef with Rick Ross, dismissing it as strictly a music thing.

Now, with Rozay currently promoting his God Forgives, I Don’t album, he sounds like he’s over the feud with Jeezy as well. In addition, the Bawse went as far as to leave an open door to possibly collaborate with the Snowman.

“As far as I’m concerned, bring that money bag, let’s shake the world up, that’s what Double M-G is about,” Ross exclaimed on MTV’s RapFix Live on Wednesday (August 1).

Ross explained that he never took any of the tension with Jeezy personal.

“I’m always ’bout business; that’s why I’m here,” Ross added. “I haven’t taken nothin’ personal since I came in the game and I think if you in this business and plan on having longevity in this you shouldn’t take nothin’ personal. Ain’t nobody stepped on my Jordans yet, not out here.”

The Bawse’s statement comes after he expressed that the beef with Jeezy is dead following an appearance on The Russ Parr Morning Show.

“You know where I’m at and the position I’m in right now, I don’t have no beef with nobody,” he said. “I’m chasing that crown right now…right now ain’t the time for that. We staying focused.”

Last November, while also appearing on MTV’s RapFix Live, Jeezy downplayed the feud as a situation of Ross catching feelings over “Death B4 Dishonor,” a freestyle the Snowman dropped over the instrumental for Rozay’s street smash “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).”

“With rap, it’s a funny thing,” Jeezy explained. “You can say things, and people can take ‘em the way they wanna take ‘em. But in my mind, in my heart, I just killed the verse [on "Death B4 Dishonor"]. If I killed the verse and you took it personally, then that’s on you.”

Jeezy added: “I felt like it was about selling records. It’ not about you, about me. We could’ve stepped in the corner and chopped it up. So right then and there, I knew it was about records, so I was cool with it.”—Jakinder Singh

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

In the midst of Riff Raff dropping three music videos yesterday (June 18), a possible beef between him and former affiliate, Soulja Boy began surfacing.

The first shots were fired yesterday afternoon, when Soulja Boy took to his Twitter account tweeting, “riff raff is not in sodmg.” Shortly after, he followed up with “Riff Raff was never in Sodmg for real he faked and used our name to promote his garbage you owe us money pussy and u a cokehead.”

XXL caught up with Riff Raff to get the scoop on the war of words between the two that took place yesterday.

“I was in Vegas just a few days ago and we talked on the phone late at night. Riff Raff explained. “He was telling me, ‘I thought you were still loyal to SODMG’ and [I] told him it wasn’t like that. I still wanted to do an album together and all the other shit we had planned.”

“Then [yesterday] all of a sudden people started hitting me up asking about this Soulja Boy thing and I had no idea what people were talking about,” he continued. “Then I saw the tweets. I’m not even tripping over it because I’m doing bigger things now anyway, but it’s kind of like you had a LeBron James on your team, and now he no longer plays on the Cleveland Cavaliers, so he’s upset. But how are you so mad? You weren’t even mad when Lil B stopped repping SODMG, so I don’t even get it.”

On the partnership that never fully materialized between Riff Raff and Soulja Boy, Riff Raff added: “ I wanted to be with SODMG at first, but once I got over there, I saw he wasn’t gonna push me or promote me in the way I needed, so obviously I had to move around to where the money was at. It’s a job. You’re gonna wanna go where you’re treated properly and where there’s more money.”

Riff Raff denied any hard feelings from his end, concluding: “At the end of the day it’s business. If he comes back tomorrow and says he wants to do the Riff Raff Soulja Boy album, I’d still do it because I think people would like to hear it. I’m not mad. You never gave nothing to me and I gave nothing to you”

Tonight, Riff Raff and Diplo will be celebrating his move to Mad Decent with an official signing party at BLOK nightclub in Los Angeles. – Neil Martinez-Belkin (@Neil_MB)

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

50 Cent hasn’t spoke to Lloyd Banks in nearly a year. During an interview with Big Boy’s Neighborhood, ’Fif recently revealed that he and his G-Unit soldier have not been in communication.

“I haven’t spoken to Banks in nine months,” 50 said live over the air. “And this is not the first time this has happened.”

“He goes through these things where there’s no communication and he goes off and does what he wants like as far as…it’s set at that point because I’ve spent marketing dollars promoting him and he could go wherever he want to go and actually go do shows and make money and do different things,” 50 said. “At that point, it’s fine for him to move around and go do it by himself. Because I want them to be individuals and operate away from me, I’m fine with it. I’ll tell his lawyers, because his lawyers call me, and I’ll tell him to make sure that he does things that I know… his ways of dealing with things is not dealing with it.”

50 even detailed a past situation in which he lost touch with Banks for several months.

“If you notice before this, this is the second time that this has actually happened,” 50 explained. “Banks tucked away for almost a year after his father passed. His father passed away, he just went home. I was like, ‘Did anyone tell him that the bill collectors are going to keep coming?’ Imagine what would have happened if Kanye West just went home after his mom passed because it happened right in the heat of the…a key point for his music.”

Upon reflecting on the lack of communication, 50 seemed to perhaps accept a bit of blame himself.

“I kind of felt like I was insensitive to the situation because I didn’t have parents,” said ’Fif about Banks dealing with the loss of his dad. “I don’t know who my father is and my mom died. I use my grandparents as references, but he was like, ‘You don’t what that is because you don’t…’”

Having said that, he expressed trouble understanding anything that could stop one from making money.

“It might be true, it might be true on some levels, but I haven’t seen any situation that made you not…I’ve lost close friends and homies that I grew up with and we didn’t not come outside to get money,” he continued.

Having said all that, 50 seemed to leave an open door for communication with Banks unlike former G-Unit members Young Buck and Game.

“Yeah, we could get on the phone together,” 50 said about him and Banks talking. “He’s a baby. He’s the youngest in the actual G-Unit and he got really rich at 19. Both him and Tony have made over $9 million. I think when the stars line up, it will be all good.”—Mark Lelinwalla

Brown’s been flirting with his rapping chops for some time, and his bars have proven to hold clout. The record sounded all good, until some subliminal lines very possibly aiming at his ex-girfriend, and fellow pop sensation Rihanna caught the attention of listeners. Take a look at the flagrant bars:

”Don’t fuck with my old bitch, it’s like a bad fur/Every industry n**** done had her/Shook the tree like a pumpkin just to smash her/Bitch is breaking codes, but I’m the password”

Ouch! Breezy must’ve seen his ex’s recent roundabouts. When the news reached Rihanna, she wasn’t having any of it, and soon did the ’12 version of rejection—she unfollowed him on Twitter. But is that it? Is she just going to have her ex-boyfriend run his mouth out in the wild? No, she won’t! *After extensively pursuing her team, XXL was able to get an exclusive listen of RiRi’s diss track. Here’s what we heard:

NOTE: This is completely fictional. It’s unclear whether Rihanna will ever record a diss track against Chris Brown, but we can always hope.

[The instrumental for "Man Down" comes on, and Rihanna exhales a blunt.]

Foolish chump, you forget the shits you’ve done?
Be glad Jay never sent Ty Ty, to make you bye bye.
You mad? That I live the pop life now?
But wait! You can get popped right now!
I got a little two-two, I call it Peggy Sue,
When I catch you, my guards will pull it out they shoes.
I can transform ya, you thought you got it poppin’,
But you stopped every second—when we had it poppin’.
That’s why now I am rocking, with men who use their weapons,
Justin Bieber said he got more goonies than you brethren. (Ah-ha!)
Boy, stop it! You see me, up on movies, making millie, (Battleship coming soon!)
Got goons from Philly to New York City.
Your hair dye looks pissed on, straight clown,
You want to hear a sequel for “Man Down”?
I got you!
But you might have to take it back, and run it,
No Juelz Santana’s going to save you with a budget,
RiRi, does the fuck she wants, believe me,
There’s a reason why they call bitches, Breezies, easy.

[Multiple gun shots, and a Funk Master Flex bomb drops in the end.]

Chorus:

Brrrat-buck-buck-buck! Brrrat-buck-buck-buck! Brrrat-buck-buck-buck! Chris Down!

Lil B has a bone to pick with A$AP Rocky. After hearing A$AP throw a jab his way in an interview last year, the Based God was none too pleased.

B recently spoke to XXL to give his thoughts on the swipe, especially since both rappers work with the same producer, Clams Casino.

“I just talked to Clams a couple days ago,” B said. “Clams about to do my new single. He about to drop one of my singles off my new mixtape. It ain’t no problems because I go the hardest. I’m the rawest. I’m eating anybody. I don’t even want no problems. It’s like everybody gotta stay in their lane and don’t come in my lane and don’t come anywhere near my plate because we eating big in Based World. We doing it big, and they know Lil B is the rawest rapper ever and will demolish anything in his path, baby.

“[Rocky] doesn’t realize I’m like the young Lil Wayne of the generation for us, minus the money,” he added. “I been in the game so long, I got the most songs in the rap game. I got the most videos. I got the most views. I’m the most talked about rapper in the world. And this has been going on for years.”

B’s comments stem from an interview A$AP Rocky did with Complex last October, in which the Harlem MC threw shots in the Based God’s direction for naming his controversial mixtape, I’m Gay (I’m Happy).

“Don’t get it twisted: I don’t fuck with Lil B or that ‘I’m Gay’ shit,” A$AP told Complex. “He wears my grandmother’s earrings. [Laughs.] I’m just being serious. It’s not going down. I mean, I can’t talk but this nigga be wilding. The nigga said, ‘I’m Gay’ and [in parenthesis put], ‘I’m happy.’ Come on, Brandon. What are you doing? That’s all I can say.”

Having said that, Lil B, a 2011 XXL Freshman, says all eyes are on him.

“Everybody is watching me,” B said. “Watch when I take it to that next level. Everybody is scared of me in the rap game.”

Lil B’s new mixtape, God’s Father is coming soon.—Jesse Gissen (@JesseXXL)

Serena is a bad chick with curves for days and a booty worth the fight. Oh, and we hear she's got a great personality and a heart of gold, too. Sounds like a win-win!

But 'Rena isn't the only famous lady that's been caught in the middle of lyrical beef. But if that wasn't true, Drizzy's subliminal tweets at the tennis great were probably enough to bring the battle out of Com, the latter who is clearly still in love with the bootylicious celebutant.

Pros: Serena has thickness for days. She also makes her own money and is at the top of her game.

Cons: Although her voluptuousness is what initially draws men in, it can also be considered a negative for Serena, since she might actually be too bulky for some. She clearly also has a temper (think back to last year when she yelled at the umpire during one of her matches.

rihanna-image

Rihanna

Shortly after leaving Chris Brown following the 2009 Grammy fiasco during which Brown left her with a busted lip and lumps on her face, Rih-Rih was spotted at a New York bowling alley playing kissy face with none-other-than Drake.

XXL - Hip-Hop On A Higher Level

Nas’s career came full circle in 2011. On “Nasty”—the lead single off of his 10th LP, Life Is Good— fittingly titled after the nickname the Queensbridge MC favored during his early years—God’s son spits raw lyrics over stripped down Salaam Remi production reminiscent of hip-hop’s golden era.

This year, the babyface MC also celebrates a quartet of anniversaries—each milestones reflecting a crucial stage in his stellar career. His introductory verse on Main Source’s “Live At the Barbecue” marked the arrival of rebellious new school lyricist looking to leave his mark in the game 20 years ago. It Was Written, released 15 years ago, was the official coronation of a rap superstar. Stillmatic—released in the wake of a series of commercially successful, yet critically panned LPs, 10 years ago—finally saw God’s Son find his footing between record sales and acclaim. Meanwhile, Hip Hop Is Dead documents Nas evolving into an elder statesman holding MCs accountable for what he perceived to be a declining rap scene at the time.

Mr. Jones briefly spoke about the two latter offerings in XXL‘s November issue. With Stillmatic and Hip Hop Is Dead respectively celebrating 10 and five-year anniversaries next week, XXL offers outtakes that didn’t make the magazine. Here, Nas says he and Jay-Z never talk about “Ether,” remembers getting Game on a Dr. Dre track when the two were at odds and reveals that Natalie Cole appeared in his “Can’t Forget About You” video free of charge.—Carl Chery (@cchery)

XXL: You started calling yourself ‘God’s Son’ on Stillmatic, 10 years after “Live At the Barbecue.” So in 10 years, you went from going to hell for snuffin’ Jesus to being God’s son.

Nas: That’s what that was for me, big time, 100 percent.

How do you feel about the word “Ether” transitioning from being your song title to becoming slang?

That’s what hip-hop has always been. We have our own. It’s a culture thing. It’s a community thing, but it’s also a young people thing, and it’s also, it’s just the way. It’s the way things are. That’s how it’s always been in hip-hop.

Even though Eminem came out with the song “Stan” first, after you called Jay-Z a stan on “Ether,” people started using it in that context.

I never even thought of that. Wow! Yea, man. I don’t even take credit for it. That’s hip-hop. That’s what hip-hop does.

You and Jay are friends now. Do you ever talk about “Ether?” Like, “Oh, you got me with that line.”

Not really. I mean, I think right now anybody who’s made it from the ’80s era, the ’90s, got into hip-hop and still stickin’ around and still here, still feelin’ great about life… I think that’s enough. I think anybody today, any peer of mine is just appreciative of the life that we’ve made for ourselves. We didn’t know anything. We didn’t know that this was gonna be the outcome, that we’d be around at this time doing what we’re doin’. I think everybody’s just on that page.

Canibus releasing an online video apologizing to J. Cole 48 hours after dissing him? Fuck outta here, man! While XXL acknowledges Canibus for being man enough to apologize and retract his diss track “J. Clone,” he should have never dissed J. Cole in the first place. Never. Cole has done nothing but compliment and big Canibus up in all his interviews and what does Canibus do in turn? Diss J. Cole. Come on, son! What are you doing, fam? One of the things Canibus took offense to was his belief that Cole “speaks about me like I am dead.” Well, fans haven’t exactly heard from you in a minute, dog. So, was LL, right? Ninety-nine percent of your fans don’t…ehh, let’s not take it there. Let’s stick to the facts: Cole is a rapper built off lyricism, no gimmicks. What’s there not to like, my dude? You jumped off the bridge for that one, homie. What were you trying to do with that diss song? Get a little attention because nobody is checking for you? Damn, Canibus. If you had 48 hours to live, just think…you’d diss J. Cole and take it back. Damn. For Jermaine, who had the No. 1 album in the country earlier this year, it’s Cole World, not to mention Gold World (after his debut LP The Sideline Story reached gold certification). For you Canibus, it’s just a cold world. Frigid. Below zero. Frozen tundra. You definitely had your moment as one of the nicest MCs ever and nobody could take that from you, but that time is long gone, so make music if you want, but before you ever try to diss someone nice and talented, do what you said in your apology and sit your “old ass down some where.”
