Kid Ink, Wheels Up

With Wheels Up, Kid Ink proves that he’s another young Los Angeles-bred MC that won’t go unrecognized and is ready to fly…

Kid Ink doesn’t deliver the typical West Coast sound audiences are accustomed to hearing from a kid born in the streets of L.A. With tracks like the Megaman-produced “Get Mine,” featuring Nipsey Hussle, and the T-Nyce-arranged “What I Do,” the 23-year-old rapper gives his fans a bounce that draws from everywhere from the South, Midwest and his native coast, creating a sound ready for take off on Wheels Up.

The young MC recruits Kountdown and SDot Fire—two Florida-based producers who have worked with everyone from Soulja Boy and Roscoe Dash to Jim Jones and Travis Porter—to create “No Sticks No Seeds,“ a Luniz-sampled (“I Got Give On It”) cut that honors the classic greenery anthems that many Cali cats have crafted through the years.

On collaborations with Atlanta heavy-hitters Travis Porter (“Like A G”) and 2 Chainz (“Stop,” also featuring Tyga), Kid Ink comes with tracks that, though a bit expected in terms of point of attack, still slap. The upstart artist later enlists Hit-Boy, currently know for his work on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “N*ggas in Paris,” for his personal record, “On My Own.” The Alumni Music Group spitter’s recounting of his struggles is a rare change of pace on the project, a slower, more somber song accompanied an R&B hook.

As Kid Ink demonstrates with his growing fan base and quality projects like Wheels Up, if he wants, he has what it takes to ink a deal. —Amber McKynzie

So why is this getting an XL when there is only one XL? If this deserves an XL then “Watch the Throne”, “Section .80″, and “Premier Politics” deserve XXL. Beats don’t make the artist…

Yeah but Yo gotti mixtape and meek millz was the same so do they deserve an L and the only reason watch the throne didn’t get one is because they got XL in every category, they didn’t get a XXl in anything so they wouldn’t be deserving of that

yet there’s only 3 responses on the review? NONE of those people have a true response on whether it’s fly or not? Maybe those weren’t REAL people commenting…

and I looked at a bunch of screen names I never saw before, which makes it more suspect…word of advice for future events…

  5. brightcrayons  | October 19, 2011 9:29 pm

$yk : that was a world premiere highly anticipated mixtape release of course more people are gonna comment on it than a review a week and a half later

    • $yk  | October 19, 2011 11:08 pm

      believe I overstand that part…

yet…is a week later too long for the populous to respond to something that you say was “highly anticipated”? Shouldn’t it be fresh in the mind? I expected at least 15-23 comments trying to take Amber’s head off…

I almost have just as many replies to my comment as fam does on this thread…good luck to youngin, just looking at it like a label exec..and whomever is holding son down, although I don’t know the page views and total downloads, what I stated is something to think about…especially if those #s are high…

co-sign 2 mark! Same look: Full body tattoos, same dress style and a baseball cap. Copied and pasted from every other “so-called hot” rapper out now.

@BooRae How can you say copy and pasted? He’s from LA and thats how they do it down here. He’s had that style a long while but people are just now noticing, he was the same when he went by DJ Rockstar before he got HOTT #swagg

I enjoyed the mixtape. I’d say his previous effort ‘Daydreamin’ is much better, but its still good i found myself only skipping one or two tracks.

The kids on a come up, like it or not.
