Outasight, Figure 8

Yonkers singer slash rapper Outasight has established his unique blend of rap, pop and soul with a series of free projects in recent years. Still, mainstream success continues to elude the multi-talented act. With his latest free EP, Figure 8, he aims to change that.

The hooky title track is destined for radio play, blending gentle piano, synth whooshes with hyper hi-hats as Outasight laments the circular motion of modern life. As an emcee, the up and comer won’t making Rakim lose sleep, but his rapping is serviceable in the context of these catchy, carefully constructed pop songs. He is a far better singer than rapper, with a smooth croon often reminiscent of Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. Another strength is the Warner signee's ability to flow fluidly between the singing and rapping. On the organ-fuelled “So What,” Out breaks up his rapped verses with a soulful shout of a chorus. The melodic, Phoenix-esque “Everything” is the standout, as Sight questions the never-ending nature of desires over a bouncy bass line and ska guitar.

Brief, bright and poppy, Figure 8 is an equally ideal listen for the new-age hip-hop fan and the those with Top 40 tastes. The release will help to build momentum and bodes well for Outasight’s forthcoming major label debut. —Aaron Matthews
