The Break Presents: Mike Baker the Bike Maker
Breakout: “La La La”
Also Check: “The Chase”
And: “Food For Thought”
Name: Mike Baker the Bike Maker
Age: ’80s baby
Reppin’: Alameda, CA – Bay Area represent. (“The Tropical Island off the Coast of the Town”)
I started rapping: The summer of ’95 with Trackademicks & MoxMore of The HNRL
My style and/or skills have been compared to: A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, De La Soul, Big Daddy Kane
My standout records and/or moments have been: Moments – Releasing my first album ‘Mike Plays It Cool’. Getting on MTV with my video for “The Chase.” Opening for The Pharcyde at The Fillmore in SF when all four of them got back together real quick. Records – “Legs” feat. Trackademicks & 1-O.A.K., “Sweat!”, “Kiss The Lens” and “The Chase”
I’m gonna change the game by: Bringing a sense of individuality and originality back to Hip-Hop. Also fun. Folks take themselves waaaaay too seriously these days and nobody has a genuine good time anymore.
I’d Like to Work With: Q-Tip, Outkast, DJ Premier, Large Professor, James Murphy, The Neptunes, Mark Ronson, Questlove
My goal in hip-hop is: I want to make music that makes people feel good. I also want to make my mark by making good records that have a lifespan of more than a couple weeks. There’s a reason we listen to all these classic Hip-Hop albums from the 90’s. There was more heart, soul and care put into albums back then. That’s my goal: Timeless music.
I’m gonna be the next: Me, myself and I
