Sir Michael Rocks’ post-Cool Kids career is a work in progress. The Midwest native has released a handful of well-received mixtapes in the last year two years in addition to aligning himself with Curren$y’s Jet Life imprint, though neither have fully materealized in Mikey becoming the solo star he’s likely aiming to become. His anticipated retail project, Banco, is slated for release in August and with production from the likes of himself, DJ Mustard and Young Chop, that EP will likely serve as Sir Michael Rocks’ official coming out party. Until then, fans get the appropriately titled While You Wait.

There are signs of growth on “Don’t Forget,” where Mikey shares a personal story of industry woes from his Cool Kids days.” “Hold Up” and “Lookin For Da Cuff” find him in vintage form, channeling his carefree flow and buoyant energy into summer ready jams. The mixtape’s production, a balance of laid back tunes and more up-tempo beats, fits him properly. From behind the boards, Mac Miller actually delivers one of the tape’s standouts, “In A Minute,” where a lively sample meets heart-racing drums. Jersey native Da$h’s grimy flow and 2013 XXL Freshman Ab-Soul’s lyrical acumen here make it one of the project’s most impressive offerings.  Jada Gabore enlists her services on “T-Shirt And No Panties On,” which should be a favorite amongst Mikey’s female fans.

Ultimately, While You Wait is the latest mixtape in a growing line of them that show a lot of promise for Sir Michael Rocks. Whether he can elevate to that next level of stardom still remains to be seen though, and Banco will be a strong indicator of that. Luckily for him, this release is enough justification for fans to wait around a bit longer.—Christian Mordi (@MordiTheComeUp)
