Dorrough Music, Highlights
There’s nothing like scoring a highlight, and Dorrough Music tries to bag a whole bunch of them on his new mixtape, Highlights, presented by DJ ill Will.
The Dallas, Texas MC jumps into the 19-set compilation with the title track, “Highlights,” which features 2012 XXL Freshman Kid Ink. The energy picks up, but the assists continue on “That Lowend (Remix),” which features Ace Hood, Nipsey Hussle and Yo Gotti alongside Dorrough over a synthetics-charged Jahlil Beats production.
“Pretty Feet,” which features Twista, has Dorrough and the Chi-town quick-tongued rhymespitter rapping about their affection for women with the right shoe game that pamper their feet. The record falls flat. Bun B, Maino, Juvenile, E-40, YG, Shawty Lo, Wale and Paul Wall also throw Dorrough assists on the mixtape. The latter, Paul Wall, appears on “Funny,” samples Johnny Kemp’s “Just Got Paid.”
While the production is fairly strong throughout the compilation and it’s impressive that Dorrough was able to draw features from all over the map—East, West and down South—the problem in often having so many capable guests is that the main artist becomes a guest on his or her own album. Dorrough falls victim to that on his latest offering. Highlights? More like moments. —Mark Lelinwalla
