Houston is home to veteran MCs like Scarface, Bun B, Slim Thug and Trae Tha Truth. But don’t forget Paul Wall. The People’s Champ reps hard for H-Town on his new DJ Drama-backed mixtape, No Sleep Til Houston.

On the 16-track compilation, Paul Wall calls on some of Houston’s finest to stand up for the fourth largest city in the country. That list of features includes Bun B, Michael "5000" Watts, Slim Thug, Z-Ro and Houston newcomers Kirko Bangz and Marcus Manchild.

Paul seems to have the most chemistry with Slim Thug, who appears on the mixtape via three different songs. One of those collaborations, “Ballin,” has the two MCs most comfortable, with Wall describing his lifestyle with lines like, “Hi hater, what it do, you remember me?/Candy pomegranate, crawling like a centipede.” And later, “Different chains every day like it was underwear/Matching grills, homie, I got diamonds everywhere!”

The Marcus Manchild-assisted, “She Likes It” bumps hard, while Paul gets throwed alongside Kirko Bangz on “KnowmtaImbout.” “That’s The Way Luv Goes” has the People’s Champ flying solo and doing his best rendition of Janet Jackson’s, “Thats The Way Love Goes,” just his particular version is chopped and screwed.

The track serves as a good break before Paul gets right back to hustling later on, “Money.” “I’m getting more cream than a coffee cup, man hold up I got more than cream up in my coffee cup/I’m poured up and I’m leaning, I got big money, I’m grinding/My clothes covered in dro smoke and wrist covered with diamonds,” he spits with extra personality on the track. It’s only fitting that the project closes out with a track called, “Houston,” which has Paul Wall, Slim Thug and Z-Ro rapping over a drum-infused version of the Sunday NFL on Fox football theme.

Although the production becomes lackluster at points, Paul Wall streamlines his sound and lyrics well on, No Sleep Til Houston. H-Town stand up! —Mark Lelinwalla
