Method Man
4:21…The Day After

MethodMan.jpgPerhaps Method Man jumped the gun back in 1998 when he named his sophomore set Tical 2000: Judgment Day. The Iron Lung’s moment of reckoning seems to actually be now. After the backlash from 2004’s Harve Pierre–heavy debacle Tical 0: The Prequel, the Wu-Tanger’s shine has dimmed considerably. With his back against the wall, Mr. Meth appears hell-bent on bringing the pain once again with 4:21…The Day After.

Meth makes his intentions clear from jump on the opening track, “Problem.” Over Erick Sermon’s cosmic funk, he declares, “Look, I ain’t come to bone you chicks, not this time/I got a bone to pick.” The Shaolin spitter’s slick wordplay continues on the sinister “Walk On,” where he and Redman run through the rock ’n’ roll-–charged track like a pair of hyperactive hyenas. However, Meth’s most potent bitch slap to his critics comes on the defiant “Say.” Backed by a Lauryn Hill vocal sample and an acoustic guitar, he barks, “The last album wasn’t feeling my style/This time my foot up in they ass, bet they feeling me now.”

Despite Meth’s lyrical strengths, some of his beat selections show signs of weakness. The lifeless “Let’s Ride” sounds like a Tical 0 reject, with its bland hook, courtesy of Ginuwine, and Mr. Porter’s overly simplistic instrumental. A similar fate befalls the Obi & Josh–produced “Ya’meen,” a monotonous electronic bounce that wastes otherwise solid cameos by Styles P and Fat Joe.

The Ticallion Stallion regains his stride, though, when he reconnects with his fellow Clansmen. The posthumous appearance of ODB on “DirtyMef” makes for a nostalgic duet, while RZA’s downscaling synthesizers on the weed-scented “420” bring da ruckus. Although not the commanding backhand to skeptics he intended, The Day After is still a step in the right direction, and gives hope that the Meth of old will come out tomorrow.—MATT BARONE

  • Sushi K

Wu ain’t dead, their best shit is simply back underground. Masta Killa and GZA both had great albums in the past couple of years and Raekwon’s Vatican mixtape was the shit.

Ghost is consistently great still, with moderate sales by big label standards (and great press reviews), while the RZA had a decent album with Birth of a Prince (love that Fast Cars track though).

Overall they ARE tired and grizzly. More fire needed under their asses. Still looking forward to picking up this Mef album, as everything I’ve heard so far’s been sick.

This album is hot it leakesd a few days ago and it has no wack tracks maybe 2 lacking out of 20. Scott Storch actually hit the keyboards good on “Is it Me” and gave us some Still Dre type shit. It has a few club tracks but all have tight Mef lyrics. All the good Wu shit is underground where they apreciate it. Check out Masta Killa new album and Gza droppin shit in October.

the wu is very awake right now, alot of niggas just don’t read production credits. ghostface is diffently doin, method’s 4:21 tracks are hotter than that tical 0 crap. he regain he’s pisceanism wit me, plus he never fell off lyrical. gza, masta killah had ill albums. reakwon is taking over the vatican. the rza just finished scoring the protector, a illy karate flick starring that kid from ong bak, he also scored the kill bill soundtrack and did a flick called derailed which by the way was a good flick. now u god and inspector deck aren’t making no dents for the wu, i can agree to that.

Care to respond to all the comments above (which seem pretty unanimous). Was at in incomplete pre-release that you “reviewed” here? If so, WHY NOT MENTION IT AND ISSUE A DISCLAIMER?

  • Sincere

For M-E-T-H-O-D Man, this is the “Don’t call it a come back, I’ve been here for years!!!” return to form, lyrically and production wise. It could have been a little more melodically tight but nontheless this is a nice solid album from Johnny Blaze…Flame on!.

  • Hass-sizzle

seriously, fuck XXL (aka G-Unit Quarterly). i was suprised that they gave Banks an L though. it seems like everyone out of the south catches an XL these days while real hip-hop catches L’s and M’s. who the fuck wrote this bullshit ass review? this is arguably one of the better recent Wu albums, next to Fishscale and Grandmasters. from now on (if i do ever pick up another XXL), i’m gonna look for the album with the worst reviews and pick them up, cuz this magazine doesn’t know what they’re talkin about no more. fuck XXL

  • http://xxl s. bagswell

fuck you xxl for this bitch ass rating. i listened to this album, intro to last song. your fuckin crazy, this shit is gas and it just shows how lame the machine surrounding hip hop is. i dont expect you people to like everything i like. thats not the point. the point is that this is good fuckin product and you are really shittin right now. im not proud of hip hop right now.

  • Sushi K

Ok I picked this up and listened a couple of times. One side of me can see how they gave it an L, but then again if you think about it, it makes no sense. Here’s the thing, if Mef had trimmed about a third of the tracks, it would have been an excellent all-around album. As is, there is filler, but…

The high points (of which there are many) are simply an awesome return to form for Mef and make it well worth repeated listenings. An EASY XL by any consideration.

The fiery and introspective lyrics are as good as he’s ever been. The music (when great) is riveting and Mef never stops spitting insane quality flows. No doubt he can go toe to toe with anyone in the biz. 80s babies step your game up.

  • Bugs

Have to agree if Meth Dropped like 5 or 6 of the joints that were filler this would have been a XXL.

    ^^^
Thing is by giving Rick Ross POM an XL, they are showing how “with” the times they are as far as the album (and magazine) buying youth goes. Rick Ross sells, the kids LOVE THE SHIT (“I’m really hustlin every day, YAAAAAH”), therefore write good about RR POM and you will sell more magazines. Duh…

Are we out of touch or do they not have any taste? Actually, like MEF said, “is it me…” Which is also what makes this a GREAT album thematically.

Granted I’m a seventies baby, and may be out of touch, but Rick Ross kind of crap existed back in the eighties and nineties and I STILL never liked it (though, Ice Cube’s best albums are my GOAT, so I’m certainly not averse to gangsta shit), so I’d like to think that everyone else has gone crazy. In fact I have a theory that ever since Bush stole the 2000 election, we have been living in an alternate reality of shit…

  • A.T.S.

I’m really gettin sick of this shit. Number 1, Rick Ross joint wasn’t even worth consideration, much less an XL. That was the most garbage ass joint I’ve heard in a long time. Number 2, Method Man’s joint is easily one of the BEST albums of the past year and I personally thought it was good all the way through. All you programmed ass clowns need to open your ears up. Most importantly Number 3, whoever the fuck said Wu is dead needs to have a mudhole stomped in his ass. Wu is just as alive and relevant as they’ve ever been. What, just because they ain’t being played on rap city or faggott ass 106 & Park they dead now? Oh I get it, they aint on the radio or droppin club shit so they dead, ha? Wu Tang has the LARGEST and most LOYAL fanbase in the WORLD. Not in the A, not in Texas, not in Cali or NY, the WORLD. You ever been to a WU concert? I bet not and until you go, shut the fuck up talkin about Wu Tang. And as for XXL, FUCK YOU HOMOS…your mag and entire staff are sellouts and have commited a crime against hip-hop….

  • Sushi K

    ^^^
If Wu Tang just keep making good albums and touring, they will be the… Greatfull Dead of hip hop.

    Gulp. I said it.

… and they will be able to sustain a lucrative living with touring alone for decades. Just ask the myriad of old-ass rock bands still touring with heart tickers and oxygen tanks in tow, raking in millions. Wu forever. Just don’t suck.

  • http://www.myspace.com/classycriminalrecords Curtis Day

I felt that this album brought back more of the orginal Tical feeling by getting “back the to basics” so to speak. The day after brought back features like Carlton Fisk and the usual Wu Tang members, where as the Prequel had more Canadian features such as Sacratees and Kardinal Offical. This gave me the warm fuzzy feeling that I used to get when I’d buy a new Wu album and bump it for the first time. I just fear that it’s gonna be under-rated by the typical public due to tha fact that they usually wanna hear mainstream hip hop and this is far from it.

  • Sincere

There was never no doubt Meth had the lyrical skills, it has always been the poor choice in production. “Is it Me?”, “Gotta Have It”, “Fall Out”, “Say”, “Ya Mean”, “Everything” and “Walk On” are the best produced tracks on the album. Running up is “Problem”, Somebody Done…”, “Dirty Mef” and I’ll go on and say “4:20″ (this was just aiight from the RZA). The tracks produced by RZA were the less melodic and inviting beats on the album and don’t really compete with real bangin’ and head nodding production. Now look, RZA has produced some nice music, just not lately. And those who know Hip-Hop’s history know what is really bangin’, even if it varies.

You guys are f***in ridiculous. How dull! You give that lazy, simple ass Rick Ross an XL and you give Meth’s LP a L?! You guys don’t know anything about real music, period! I’m sorry but someone’s gotta speak up on this. I’m tired of people accepting someone who barely rhymes and uses Miami in the Scarface light and get an XL. Meth’s LP is hot and ya’ll need to get a grip! Change the damn ranking!

  • Black B

Now as for the album, a few ‘Def Jam’ songs should have been left off. But Jay-Z and Co. forced Meth to put those track on, so ’4Ever’ and ‘Let’s Ride’ stay. But RZA’s beat are tight. They don’t knock you down, but ’420′ is hot. Meth just ride RZA’s beat and they make sense. ‘Problem” and ‘Somebody Done F***ed Up’ are straight up Wu-bangers. ‘Presidental MC’ is the Wu cut we need. This is a hot album, and you jealous south niggas need to stop hating on NY. Ya’ll ain’t the only ones with hot shit
