St. Louis rapper Smino drops a new song titled "Blkoscars" to celebrate the six Black actors who were nominated at the 2017 Academy Awards.

He teams up with Jay2 from the Zero Fatigue crew on the Monte Booker-produced track.

"Deserve a Oscar the way a nigga been on his role," Jay2 spits as he opens up the record. "Love letters like how you feel, I been on this road."

The second verse is taken over by Smino and he floats on the beat viciously. "Run and tell them blank white canvases the artist back/Sweet music from the Viola Davis like Sammy Son Jr. in this bitch/The damage done," he raps. The vibe and feel of the record is fast-paced but the bars can be relatable to someone who's really out here grinding to get their own.

The song's inspiration comes from Smino being inspired by the controversy surrounding the 2016 Academy Awards. Controversy erupted due to the fact that some critics and movie buffs felt they were deemed "so white" and not enough Black actors were nominated, which prompted the #OscarsSoWhite hashtag. The hashtag went viral and may be the reason behind more major Black films like Hidden Figures, Fences and Moonlight being nominated this year.

"Blkoscars" is the follow-up to his recently released track "Anita." Smino opened up about the record, which is also tied to race and ethnicity. "We know we're Black, but what does that mean?" Smino asks. "Anita" was created to help and inspire Black women all across the globe.

His forthcoming Blkswn album, which will feature the self-titled track, is a full-length project that serves as the follow-up to his previous blkjuptr EP. Blkswn is set to release in the spring.
