Joey Purp Releases ‘iiiDrops’ LP

After years as part of Chicago's SaveMoney collective, Joey Purp is finally stepping out on his own for his first full length solo project iiiDrops.

The 11-song offering features guest appearances from Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa, and also Mick Jenkins, Saba, Teddy Jackson and theMIND.

This project has been a long time in the making. XXL spoke with Senor Purp back in 2014 when he was still trying to conceptualize the album. He had big plans then.

"It was originally gonna be titled Eyedrops, but I think I’m gonna name it Performance Art ," he said then. "I guess it would be somewhat be theatrical in the sense, seeing as I have a lot of different influences, I can take it anywhere. I can make some shit like 'Irie Trill Vibes,' like some super hard heavy shit, or something like 'Don’t Stop' where it is like introverted, boom-bap-based, hip-hop. It is based off lyricism. With the title Performance Art and with the attitude of making performance art and just that energy in general, I want people to know, like, lack of better words, deeper than rap.”

Obviously, JP went with a different variation of his initial title, but it appears he has thematically stayed the course.

Hours before the release of the record, Purp took to Instagram to offer his thoughts on the monumental occasion. "Right now I am less then 24 hours from the release of my debut project. Regardless of what happens after this point, I'd like to say thank you. To any and every person who sees this. Friend or foe, I'm doing it for you," he wrote.
