You remember the first four Outkast records: Big Boi was the one whose roots ran so deep you couldn't shake him out of his gators. While Andre pushed the duo farther and farther out into the stratosphere, Antwan had the requisite funk, sneer and scowl to be dropped square in the middle of East Atlanta in the '70s and no one would be the wiser. (The fifth record, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, made the divide explicit, and that was that.) But since he embarked in earnest on a solo career a half-decade ago, Big Boi has found himself growing more intrigued with today's indie sounds. Next week, this will be made official; together with Greenwich, NY electronic rock duo Phantogram, he's dropping a seven-song EP. Billed as Big Grams, the set includes contributions from Run The Jewels and Skrillex. Their latest single, "Lights On" is out today (Sept. 18), leans heavily on the Gram half, before Big Boi comes in to drop some knowledge about ADD medication. You can pre-order the Big Grams record here via Epic.
