As Kanye West drags his feet in preparation for his seventh solo album, fans might be encouraged to go back through the Chicagoan’s catalog. With the benefit of hindsight, it seems obvious that “The hood love to listen to Jeezy and Weezy—and oh yeah, Yeezy!” would give way to a flood of phonetic imitators. On that note, it seems that Eazy season is upon us. As West did in 2013 with the truncated rollout for his sparse, industrial Yeezus, the Bay Area’s G-Eazy is packing an awful lot of promotion into a very abbreviated timeline. His as-of-yet untitled sophomore album is tentatively due out next month, so it’s high time the carefully groomed MC drop a single—or three. Today (Sept. 16), Eazy let loose of three new cuts, “Need You Now,” “Say So” and “Friend Zone.” The trio of cuts shows the artist’s range, flitting back and forth between “Friend Zone”’s woozy lounge music and the sharper drums on “Say So.” Stay tuned to XXL for more news on the album.
