Lots of West coast rappers are married to signifiers. Khaki suits, low riders, blunts, palm trees, G-funk. Vince Staples doesn't need any of them. His double-disc Def Jam debut, Summertime '06, is cold and industrial; the Clams Casino-produced "Norf Norf" is one of the album's sparsest cuts, and Staples populates it with Porches and abortions and, in the video, crooked cops. The hook ("I ain't never ran from nothing but the police") is played out to its natural end here. Vince raps from a squad car, from an interrogation room, from a line-up. Just like the song itself--and just like the clip for "Senorita"--the "Norf Norf" video is instantly memorable, and brings the young MC's bleak Long Beach upbringing to life. And is "Bitch, you thirsty, please grab a Sprite" not the coldest way to fulfill your sponsorship contract? Watch Vince chop it up with OG Maco and GoldLink as part of the 2015 XXL Freshman roundtable series.
