Next Friday (July 24), American audiences will be able to see Southpaw, the latest film from Training Day director Antoine Fuqua. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams and 50 Cent, the film was once upon a time set to star Eminem. Though the rapper had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts as he finished his 2013 solo album, The Marshall Mathers LP 2, he had been training with professional boxers and was, by his own admission, emotionally invested in the Richard Wenk-penned script. So instead of abandoning the project entirely, he signed on to helm the soundtrack, contributing singles "Phenomenal" and the Gwent Stefani-featuring "Kings Never Die," among other appearances. Here, he taps his longtime partner in crime, Royce da 5'9", who teams up with DJ Premier as their duo, PRyhme. They tap young Def Jam talent Logic for "Mode," an anthemic cut that finds Royce deep in the beat's pocket.
