iLoveMakonnen has used his Drink More Water mixtape series shrewdly; the last installment, his most recent release, has cemented him as something more than a two-hit wonder. But the eccentric singer decided to hearken back to his breakthrough, self-titled EP for his latest video. "Rumors" is stark and minimal, comprised almost entirely of performance footage. Though he blew up off of famous co-signs and high-concept singles, this is an argument for the Atlanta upstart as an artist who can work in close quarters, without high production value. He most recently contributed his voice to Brodinski's latest effort, as well as his own "Super Chef" video. His influence was felt on A$AP Rocky's At.Long.Last.A$AP; the New York rapper says it was Makonnen who provided the LSD that guided the album's spiritual development. (Wild orgies never hurt a rap record, either.) Fans can catch Makonnen at Pitchfork Music Festival this Friday (July 17) in Chicago.
