DJ Drama and Don Cannon’s Court Hearing Postponed

Wednesday Jan 24 1:08 PM CST posted by xxl staff

A court hearing scheduled for this morning in the racketeering case of DJ Drama and his business partner Don Cannon has been postponed. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that neither Drama nor Cannon were present in Fulton County Superior Court this morning, and a new hearing date was not announced. Defense attorneys and prosecutors were expected to discuss the case and how it will proceed at today’s session. Fulton County Sheriff’s deputies, working in conjunction with the RIAA, raided the DJ’s downtown Atlanta recording studio on January 16 causing an uproar in the hip-hop community, where mixed CD’s play a huge role in the promotion of new and established artists alike. According to authorities, the scope of Drama and his Aphilliates crew’s mixtape business puts them in violation of Atlanta’s Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. Both men are currently free on $100,000 bail each, and face up to five years in prison and fines ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 if found guilty.

It’s really unfortunate that these men have become targets for making money. I could see if the men where trafficking drugs or something…but music? Wow. Doesn’t Atlanta have bigger fish to fry like crooked cops, the desegregation of night clubs, one of the worst states in education, high crime etc… Get a grip ATL!

DJ Fatal 1 says:

Yess!
That’s whats up! I wish all the best for these pioneering businessmen, with this case/raid/possible conviction shows that the industry is on the run! I’ve been watching this whole thing come to this (think about the Civil Rights Movement/Black Panthers/M.O.V.E Organization)! With more and more indie labels making their own rules about what we listen to as opposed to what the radio plays 40 times a day and the elephant in the room that nobody sees “payola”. With mixtapes, satellite radio, and digital downloading, the once-mighty industrial complex of music is starting to feel the burn, finally. We have starving artists that have been struggling with release dates being pushed back, sample clearance, and record companies folding under the weight of the major distribution company’s and the billboard’s pressure to commercialize Hip-Hop. Now, we have 2 of the most popular underground mixtape DJ’s getting raided? Now we have underrated artists like Talib literally giving away a whole cd! Thumbing his nose at the industry, and starting his own indie label! Hell, the whole southern explosion on the scene was due to indie labels and underground mixtapes finally getting national distribution! “A Gift and a Curse” as Jay-Z once said and as much as I don’t wish any harm come to these pioneers, I’m glad that the RIAA actually has to come off their high-horse and see our Culture for what it has been for almost 30yrs….POWER!!

Peace

Fatal 1

Should’ve got those samples cleared…wouldn’t be in this mess. Mixtapes are black market underground hip-hop anyway, shouldn’t need sample clearance. Guess when a black man is makin too much money and the guvment can’t take they piece, it’s a mu’fuckkin prolem. Let these black men make they music and quit harrassin them. Too many cold cases to solve to worry about music on the black market. Go get a donut, cop that Gangsta Grillz “Cant Ban the Snowman” and “Dedication 2″ and you will understand how powerful the movement is….don’t forget, don’t forget…cop that T.I. too. It’s Gangsta Grillz you bastards!!!!!!!1

They got too BIG.

The RIAA should also fine all of the National Chains that are carrying the mixtapes. Why hasn’t this happened?

I saw more copies of Mixtapes for the Game than actual albums at the Best Buy here in Atlanta.

New Jersey Devil may be next

deaf blaze says:

the plm is they did not follow the law.

the letter of the law requires that the name of the licensed owner of recorded music be on the front cover.

That means SONG WRITER/PRODUCER/RECORD LABEL and what not.

MIXTAPES ARE PROMOTIONAL ITEMS THAT ARE SUPPOSELY TO BE GIVEN AWAY AS A FREE BUT THE GREY AREA IS THESE ARE CD’s and IPODS DOWNLOADS.

CHECK OUT APPLE ITUNES AND U SEE THEY ARE FOLLOWING THE LAW TO A T.

DJ DRAMA AND DJ DON REAP WHAT THEY SOW. TOO BAD THEY CANT ACCESS A HIGH PRICE LAWYER CUZ THE STATE OF GA DOESNT PLAY THAT!
