    Hip-Hop’s new go-to guy

Tuesday Jan 2 2:51 PM CST posted by Byron Crawford

Since when did will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas become the go-to producer for so many ostensibly hardcore rappers? Last year alone he contributed tracks to three of the year’s most highly anticipated rap albums - Busta Rhymes’ The Big Bang, The Game’s Doctor’s Advocate, and Nas’ Hip-Hop Is Dead. Who knows what he’s got in store for 2007.

What’s even more bizarre is that DJ Premier, one of the consensus best producers evar, especially when it comes to hardcore hip-hop shit, hasn’t had a beat on a prominent rap album in a minute. (Unless I’m forgetting something.) If it wasn’t for Christina Aguilera - clearly God’s gift to humanity - he might be back working at UPS or some such.

I think it’s pretty obvious what’s going on here. The Black Eyed Peas sold several gozillion copies of both 2003’s god-awful Elephunk and 2005’s god-awful Monkey Business, if not last year’s Fergie solo album. Meanwhile, who else in hip-hop’s career has been doing nearly as well. Nas, Busta, and the Game were all at fairly tenuous points in their careers in 2006.

And I say this because I can’t imagine any of them (not even Nas) sitting around the listening to “Let’s Get Retarded in Here” and thinking, “Wow, that’s exactly the sound I’m looking for my next album!” Presumably, if the Kevin Federline album had gone triple (which is the new diamond), every rapper would be clamoring to get him on their next project.

Here’s the thing: I don’t know that anything will.i.am did last year production-wise was especially successful either creatively or commercially. The track he did on the Game album was a decent enough ’80s-era Dre knock-off, but it wasn’t a single, and probably couldn’t be, which makes you wonder how it came about in the first place.

“I Love My Chick” from the Busta Rhymes album and the title track from Hip-Hop Is Dead were his two most prominent rap singles released last year, and neither of them really did anything - er, at least they weren’t nearly as popular as the crap he’s done with the Black Eyed Peas. Plus I don’t know anyone who’s that crazy about either of them.

As such, it’ll be interesting to see what the new year has in store for will.i.am. My guess is that not as many rappers will be returning his phone calls, but what do I know? Supposedly he’s got a solo album coming out; will it be as huge as his work with the Black Eyed Peas, or will it be a huge embarrassing failure like the various Pharrell Williams side projects?

something weird happened after “behind the front”. BEP started sucking cojones. being thrown into the neo-native tongues movement seemed their goal, and upon releasing “bridging the gap” and featuring de la and mos def, seemed poised to really break above ground as well as maintain integrity. well, neither happened and when i first saw the dr. pepper commercial i knew that it would never happen. who cares really, but it seems obvious to me that being a corporate whore, and in fact incorporating a whore into the group, were more appealing than staying “underground”.

as for prominent rappers featuring will.i.am as the producer, yet not as a guest emcee, well, it’s clear that they are interested in his commercial appeal as a producer and not as an actual artist with any credibility.

    According to Billboard Magazine:

Black Eyed Peas principal will.i.am was ubiquitous behind the boards in 2006, producing tracks for Justin Timberlake, Fergie, Snoop Dogg and Nas and earning a producer of the year Grammy nomination.

But his sights are now set on Michael Jackson’s comeback album, which is tentatively due before the end of the year on the Bahrain-based Two Seas Records.

In closing, at the end of the day it’s all about moving units.

Primo did do the Format joint on AZ’s album which was aight - not on the same level as usual Primo beats. He also did the New York Ryder Music joint for Agallah - again not a big name MC.

I agree with Bol and don’t see the hype - not to say that the joints will.i.am did were wack, but not anything exceptional enough to make him as in demand as it seems. The “Can’t Forget About You” joint of HHID is probably the best joint he did this year.

Speaking of producers, all the usually great street beatmakers have been making generally suspect beats of late - peep Dre on the Jay joint, RZA, Primo, etc. L.E.S. probably had some of the better beats with the Black Republican and Money Over Bullshit beats. Just Blaze did aight too, but ain’t no one come with anything that made you really sit up and take notice.

Weak lyrics, corny ass concepts, and average beats…maybe why Hip-Hop is dying…

As for will, I like his style a little bit. He’ll probably get better with time. Just dont start singing everbody’s hooks(skateboard p, swizz).

I agree with the king, alotta folks is suspect lately. I think L.E.S is corny personally. I mean he hits the mark at times, but most of his shit is too meloncholy ( hope I spelled it right). Eastside Bread Maker says:

Listen yall got Bol feeding yall a bunch of Bullshit. The Busta joint is hands down the weakest of the three songs that were mentioned, and that shit is fire. Hell I was piping my chick to that song the other night.

As for the compton song, I live in BK, NY and the first time i heard that compton shit, I wished for just once in my life that i lived in compton so that i could ride around to that shit. Cuz that shit is hard. The beat is knocking and the fact that it sounds like an old EARLY 90’s Dre beat is the thing that makes it hot. Game and Will were trying to recapture that old N.W.A. sound, which they did ever so nicely.

Nas’s joint, although it is just an uptempo Thief’s theme is still fire.

And the best beat that Will did for anyone last year was the Keep Boucing beat for Too Short and Snoop. I dont even get into the whole hyphy movement shit, I’m from NY and we too cool for that shit, but that beat is hands down one of the best beats i have ever heard. I have caught myself bouncing to that shit many times.

So just because his group is as you all say, teh ghey, that doesn’t mean that his beats aren’t banging.

Open your ears and close ya eyes, from the venom that faggot ass Bol is trying to impute on your minds!!!

BEP and will.i.am were never really any good, even in their overrated “underground” phase.

But I have to admit, man’s beats notably improved this past year. Certainly not to the point of go-to producer (no one’s even remotely close to Timbaland these days). I think it’s definitely the exposure to Brazilian sounds while doing the Sergio Mendes album that helped.

Granted, Timeless really wasn’t that good either, but you can hear the Brazilian funk influence giving his more recent hip-hop tracks some life, and you can clearly hear the favela sound in My Humps and Fergilicious, both of which are guilty pleasures for me.

Ok. Will.i.am isn’t the most g’d up producer in the game, but his beats are good. Timberland or Dre make Compton off the Game’s album and everyone who hates that song would be on their nuts. Dude from a pop group makes the beat and its blasphamy and all his shit sucks. People call Will.i.am because they like his beats. The shits cost tens of thousands of dollars. You don’t just go and get some random nigga with platinum plaques when you want a record (thats why no one is lining up to have Bow Wow for beats even though he has 3 platinum albums one of which went triple plat). And since when is rapping over the same sample twice blasphamy? Nobody shat all over Leonardo because he painted more than one picture with Jesus in it. Everyone just needs to chill, except the fact that hiphop is dead (all those classics that you love so much are never coming back thats all that means. There will never be another Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic, Ready to Die, All Eyez on Me, etc. EVER) and enjoy the music. And Bols you write some of the most unprofessional shit I have ever read in my life. Do you even have a degree? Better yet did you graduate from high school? “This track is teh gay” is not a review. IMO this shit really gets to me, I mean its obvious that america always has its favorite “token black guy”. Firstly, the neptunes (that includes chad) make beats. Pharell by himself just made one of those bad career moves, I mean I love the neptunes beats, and it didnt really bother me when he was singin on shit and whatnot, but when he’s trying to cross over into being an artist, he just killed it. Thats where Will has a leg up, he already has had some success with BEP and people wanna stand next to that. I dont particularly care for Will’s beats, and I think its just a name recognition thing at this point. But right now you gotta say that will is that proverbial “token black guy” to give other artists like Christina and Fergie some kind over crossover value, just as Justin Timberlake has done with Timbo, these artists wanna stand next to someone who gives them clout in the black community and crossover value, that used to be Pharell (see Gwen Stephanie), and now its Will.I.am, I dont think Timbo can be added to that list because he’s just executive producing and droppin sick beats always. As far as the rappers fuckin wit Will, its just to stand next to someone who’s hot to bump sales, which is IMO a big reason for Game’s success cause he made a we are the world record and put every major name and super producer he could to sell (is he even making any money?).. well that and riding that G-Unit hater wave (sheepole). I just think its all business and in the end, its really the African American superstars losing out by standing next to some white dude just to get that guac. Just my take, but an actuall decent post by Bol, wow..

This is some of the most disgusting commentary I have
ever read in my life. You should be ashamed to call yourself a fucking writer. A black man gets in a position to better his family and love ones and all you
want to do is pull him down. Will I Am is an extremely
talented producer and songwriter. Obviously you don’t
know what a chord structure is or the difference between A John Lennon and A Stevie Wonder. Do your
history before you hate. Check out Atban Klan. And remeber Will was signed to the late great Easy-E’s Ruthless records you ignorant son of a bitch.

Bol is the reason Hip Hop is dead.

Why? Becuase he doesnt understand the history of the artist that are doing this music. Will.I. am was a back up dancer for Eazy-E. He’s been doing this for 15+ years, he is HIP HOP. Dont forget will produced a song on the 1st John Legend album. There are many talents to the mans production ablity, not just B.E.P. You can take one piece of work and judge him on it.

IT PAINS ME TO SEE BLOGGERS NOT KNOW THEIR HIP HOP HISTORY..DAMN BOL DO KNOW DIDDLY

“hip hop is dead” can’t touch “thief’s theme”…its catchy as hell but NaS ain’t even come with the heat (what’s with that f’in with the first verse?) until the chanting at the end. And will.i.am’s crooning on the hook is corny as hell.

Credit where its due, “can’t forget about you” is hot…one of the best songs in NaS’ discography.

But I don’t really care if will.i.am used to polish dre’s piece…he’s still totally wack. Even worse if he has talent and does the b.e.p.s just for the money.

BTW, Eazy-E’s backup dancer? I ain’t never seen anybody poppin’ er lockin’ to 187′um or boyz in da hood…and Eazy was a punk, anyway, needing ghost writers and jacking cube and dre for money.

[...] After a big 2006, will.i.am remains one of the hottest producers in hip-hop. I have no idea why he’s the producer of the moment (perhaps the same people that like Eminem’s beats are his fanbase), but it looks like he’s using his success to work on Michael Jackson’s comeback album. The Black Eyed Pea is also advising Jackson on ways to use social networking sites and technology for the album. The album is expected to be out by the end of 2007. will.i.am tells Billboard.com he has been doing “a lot of talking on the phone, a lot of brainstorming” with Jackson so far. Their conversations, he says, involve more than just music but also figuring out how Jackson can use new technology, particularly social networking sites and download outlets, to his advantage. But Jackson’s next musical direction remains a primary concern. “Man, he still sings like a bird,” will.i.am says. “He could go anywhere. I think we have a real opportunity to do something here. It’s either gonna be really big or nobody’s gonna care. Ain’t no middle ground on this one.”            [...]

so what if will.i.am does something different from your regular gangsta genre personally music shouldn’t be confined to any one form and if the rappers feel he has something to offer them then let him do his thing. ummm..what kind of “music” journalist are you BYRON CRAWFORD??…that you havent noticed…in the Peas music there are a Ton of old school/golden age hip hop references…musically and lyrically

The reason the more “classic” style rappers go to Will for beats.. WILL.I.AM is HIP HOP!! the peas are Breakdancers…Will is a DJ…he still chops up samples in the beat making process..

the black eyed peas are More Hip hop than any new rapper you can name…they just happen to make party music that translates to a popular audience..don’t try to downplay that the Peas are a Hip Hop group first..
