clipse1.jpgCalling something “classic” is confusing. How can a journalist use the “c” word to describe an album after one listen, often three months before it hits stores? The controversial word says something not only about the quality of the music, but how it impacts the hip-hop community for years after its release. Shoot, most LPs that we would consider classic today, from The Chronic to Comin’ Out Hard, didn’t receive a flawless rating from any major publications when they were released.

Sure, XXL gave Clipse’s new album Hell Hath No Fury an “XXL” rating (something that only 5 albums have previously obtained). Still, nowhere in the review is the word “classic” used, and with good reason. While the music is arguably perfect, only time can decide its classic status. Hoping to get some insight into what they consider hip-hop’s most timeless tracks, we asked Pusha and Malice to name 10 albums (in no particular order) that they would give a classic rating to. Hindsight is 20/20, of course.

    Listen To:
    Clipse “Ride Around Shining”
    Clipse “Keys Open Doors”

    Clipse feat. Bilal “Nightmares”

All taken from Hell Hath No Fury, in stores now.

    Raekwon
    Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…
    (Loud/RCA, 1995)

Pusha: “Cuban Linx was great ’cause you had this crew coming out of New York who just set hip-hop on fire, and everybody had their own character, but Cuban Linx was just the uncut raw version. Rae really painted a picture. The album itself was just a cohesive masterpiece. I’m talking bout from production to lyrics. Lyrically, they were trendsetters—they had their own slang, and they rapped it like they didn’t care if you knew it. You had to go find out what it meant. There was no explanation. You could tell they were totally doing them.”

    Favorite Track: “Incarcerated Scarfaces”

    —-

    Boogie Down Productions
    Criminal Minded
    (B-Boy Records, 1986)

Malice: “Oh my God, yes! Criminal Minded. I remember when they came out and it was just underground. There was a couple big heavy dope dealers from New York in Virginia that we just all knew. They came to Virginia and they was cool with us. My man Reggie and Fred—they came with this Boogie Down Productions joint. It had “The P Is Free” on there, and it just wrecked my life. I wanted to be associated with New York, hustlin’, getting’ money, big chains…it was just so damaging to me. And then we have family in the South Bronx, and my cousin Snapper would just talk about what’s hot because New York had everything first. That whole album is crazy. What I need to do right now is revisit that album. I’m sure it will spark the motivation to get back into writing.”

    Favorite Track: “Criminal Minded”

    —-

    Jay-Z
    Reasonable Doubt
    (Roc-A-Fella/Priority, 1996)

Pusha: “Reasonable Doubt is definitely the best of all the Jay albums. It set a new standard and it gave a face to the whole lifestyle—the whole street culture and the actual lusting for the finer things in life. There was a whole mystique that came along with Reasonable Doubt. I was into all the rumors that came along with it. People were saying like, You see Jay-Z as the face man, they loved Dame Dash as being the brash dude, but Biggs was like the mystery man. Even he played a part in it because he gave a sense of reality. You always heard the stories like, ‘He was in the streets for real’ or ‘he won’t get in the videos.’ It just added to the mystique of the whole Roc-A-Fella situation.”

    Favorite Track: “Can I Live?”

    —-

    Kool G Rap
    Wanted: Dead Of Alive
    (Cold Chillin’, 1990)

Malice: “Kool G Rap was one of my favorites. ‘Streets of New York,’ with that piano, is one of my all-time favorite songs. It’s a nostalgia, I remember where I was at when I got that. I had just got a brand new stereo system, brand new equalizer with the drum machine with the 4 pads on it. I just remember the video where he was spitting like crazy. I remember thinking he was such an ill lyricist.”

Favorite Track: “Streets Of New York”

    —-

    Dr. Dre
    The Chronic
    (Death Row, 1992)

Malice: “I wasn’t a fan of West Coast rap—I didn’t understand it. I didn’t understand the white gloves and the permed hair. But when Snoop and Dre came on the scene with The Chronic, I could understand it and I respected Snoop as an MC. I thought he was insane, and he was so anticipated, just off that album. The music on that album, from beginning to end, you could just ride to that. It made me have a great feel for the West Coast and I really appreciated the sound from that side.”

    Favorite Track: “Let Me Ride”

    —-

    Mobb Deep
    The Infamous
    (Loud, 1995)

Pusha: “That was it man. Young, rebellious, Black angst. It just embodied the ignorance of youth. When it dropped, that was the best thing since sliced bread to me. I was quoting that shit line for line. ‘I use to drive an Ac and kept a mac in the engine/Windows painted black with crack sales intentions.’ I was done. The videos in the Audi, oh my God. The cups of Hennessey. It was something different. It showed a little younger side to the wild street shit. ‘Shook Ones’ was a guaranteed fight started in any club that year.”

Favorite Track: “Shook Ones Part II”

    —-

    Nas
    Illmatic
    (Sony, 1994)

Malice: “Illmatic captured the whole New York state of mind for me. It embraced everything I knew New York to be. The album had 10 songs, all of them flawless. Me and my homies got great memories of rolling around listening to that, huslin’, smokin’, chillin’. That embodied everything that was right with hip-hop. That CD never came out my deck.”

Favorite Track: “New York State Of Mind”

    —-

    Eric B. & Rakim
    Paid In Full
    (4th & Broadway, 1987)

Malice: “When Rakim came out, he just changed the climate. Like how snap music came this year and took everything over, Rakim came and made everybody just talk when they rapped. It was just smooth and mellow. He brought a lot of knowledge of self to the table. When I first started rhyming, I used to scream like Run from Run-DMC, and he showed me that you don’t have to do that. You can just talk and get your point across. He just broke through the door and was just cool with it.”

Favorite Track: “Eric B. Is President”

    —-

    The Notorious B.I.G.
    Life after Death
    (Bad Boy, 1997)

Pusha: “It totally showed the growth of Big from Ready To Die. It had so many dimensions to it. And all of them were just great interpretations of whichever lane he was in. If he was talkin’ about some gangsta shit on “What’s Beef,” or he was telling a comedic story on “I Got A Story To Tell.” “Praying On My Downfall”…there were so many great moments. Even if he went the R&B route with R. Kelly—“I’m Fuckin’ You Tonight”—he killed every vein of it. When he was recording it, he must have been like, Man, we keepin’ everything!”

    Favorite Track: “What’s Beef”

    —-

    Public Enemy
It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back
    (Def Jam, 1988)

Pusha: “It was politically charged, aggressive, but still, they conveyed it in a way that you wasn’t preachy. They made you appreciate it and love it. It was some of the most militant shit I was hearing and it was great. And they crossed genres—it seemed like everyone was listening to them, not just hip-hop. They took issues head-on, it didn’t matter, they addressed it. This particular album was in their heyday, and I think it was the highlight of their whole career.”

Malice: “I remember walking through school with ‘Black Steel’ on my headphones and thinking that I was gonna do what I wanted and the teachers wasn’t gonna tell me nothin’. Chuck D said he wouldn’t go into the military and the government were suckers, and I just felt so empowered by that.”

Favorite Track: “Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos”

I agree with mostly all of what they are saying. Cuban Linx in 95 was the truth. I was a wu fanatic then like i have been a Jay fan the last 8 years. Infamaous was that rebelous, we on the corner cutting class shit. I was in 12th grade 95-96 and those were the years. Criminal minded I use to sing, and Dope beat, and Bridge is over and South Bronx. I use to sing those getting dressed for school. P.E I think had the most hits one tape could have and 88 and 95 to me are the two best years in Hip Hop history. We know about Illmatic, But Reasonable Doubt was on another level. Niggas talked 2 for 5’s and corner hustle. But Jay talked about the emotional side of hustling. Can I live and Regrets. “In 3rd person, I don’t want to see them…one of these buyers got eyes like a Korean, its dificult to read them. Jay changed the game on that cd. Ready to Die was Grimy, and Cuban Linx introduced a lot of that talk, But Reasonable took it to another level. You knew that Jay had to live most of that because that was to autobiografic. A lot of rappers are in the game but Jay rapped like a boss and not a worker and that changed everything. All of these choices I would put in my top 15-20. I would like to see Smif and Wesson Da Shinin up in there but its a go

Much less the album Makaveli which has some many moods and is tight top 2 bottom. 2 Me all them Rappers are secretly chasing that album on the DL cause it had it all. I haven’t gotten the Hell album yet but I about 2 break down and cop dat cause I am hoping that something can touch or at least get wit’ the Game album which will be a classic hate 2 say. Muthafuckaz b killin’ me. If that nigga would have moved 100,00-200,000 that shit would have been the first post on this muthafuckin’ site today! My thing is this, if u gon’ critique a nigga when he do bad, congratulate him when he do good. This nigga just brought the East coast back single-handedly and niggas ain’t mentioned shit on here. Where all the niggas talkin’ about how much of a shit sandwich is was gon’ be?? Where the niggas that was ridin’ Game dick and sayin’ he was gon’ outperform Jay? Like my man said: DIG A HOLE!

Where is Tupac, and Snoop in thier top ten classics. They left out two of the greatest of all time to put Mobb Deep, and Raekwon in their. I’m not hating, both these CD’s were good, but Doggystyle is one of the greatest CD’s ever made. You can listen from the begining to end, and not get sick of it. I still got it on rotation now, and they could have said any Tupac CD because all he made was classic music. You can tell that Clipse were influenced by eastcoast rap. Me personally being from the mid west I have always liked both coasts equally.

Good list here. Not sure i agree with “Life after Death.” I loved that cd but to me, it was no where near “Ready to Die.” Also great to see “The Infamous” by Mobb Deep. I love bumpin’ that Mobb shit from the 90’s (The Infamous, Hell on Earth.) Anyways just bought Clipse album. Its a good album but I just dont think its a classic. Maybe its because im not big on Neptunes production. But Malice and Pusha’s lyrics are sick.

Sometimes by the vitriol from Georgia, I wonder where the south begins and the north ends or do they even consider VA as the south. I never hear a person from Georgia represent the east coast. they act like they’re just strictly southern all the time. Why can’t you be both? That’s how the rest of the country sees the state of GA, the southEAST.

    AJTHROWBACK says:

What people have to realize is that the Clipse were asked to name 10 albums that THEY thought were classics to THEM, which entails naming 10 albums off the top of their head that they thought were classics. I’m pretty sure that they did want to put Pac or somebody who may have been left out, but they basically were naming 10 albums that were classics in their mind. Additionally, if you know ANYTHING about the Clipse, y’all would know that all the people they mentioned were people who influenced their style of rapping, as well as people who they felt put out classic material. Everything is a matter of perspective, people.

To Baybidness, just a little FYI for you: maybe the reason why the Clipse is trying to be like New York because they were born there. They lived in Harlem for a good period of their childhood before moving to Virginia, so it’s kinda in their blood, homey. They might’ve lived in VA most of their lives, but since their family is from New York, that kind of pride for the city doesn’t exit your system, especially if you’re old enough to remember.

OK I feel the list Ready to die is better than life after death but of course this is all opinion. But I am afriad there album is still not a classic it is good dispite the neptunes homo thug club sound but it isn’t a classic. because critics can talk all the shit they want but a classic has to do several things:

    1. Be a good album start to finish (with little to now skip points)
    2. It has to change to game make folks say damn this wasn’t happening like this before then he came through and crushed it.
3.It generally gets excepted by both indie and mainstream on some level(note all classics don’t go platinum in there time but they do eventually because they are timeless)

All I am gonna say is that u peeps on here is so wrapped up in HOV, that even if his album is OK, u will still try to act like its the best thing. Kingdom come aint even close to how he used to be. He still nice, but at this point, the game has plenty of room for other rappers to come up. Clipse are lyricist, and if yall quit hating, take HOV di$k out ya mouth, and LISTEN to what CLIPSE is saying on this album, u’d see what im saying. While some of the beats could have been better on HHNF, it really aint bout that. Them dudes wanted SIMPLE ASS beats so that people could actually listen to what they were saying instead of getting hype off beats. Thats one of the problems in hip hop today, so called fans hear a good beat and call a song dope when behind that beat, a lot of rappers aint talking that talk. WAKE UP MY N’s… wake up. Clipse still nice, and if they work with other producers next album, its gonna be really off the chain. Still in all, they havent been out for a while, and they the type that focus on lyrics and not CLUB bangers, snap music, or special beats. BAYBIDNESS, A-West, GO GET SOME MONEY, A GIRL OR SOMETHING, and quit hating so damn much!

For everyone on here saying that Eminem hasn’t made a classic you need to quit hating the guy just because he is white. When the Marshall MAthers LP came out it was all over the place. You could hear it comig from cars in the suburbs, and in the hood. Everyone was playing it. To me that is a classic. Something that his widely accepted, and you can just push play and listen to the whole CD. Not to mention that Eminem has sold more CD’s in his short career than people like JAy Z, Nas, Em has even outsold Dre on solo projects. Give the guy some credit

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Took every single word outta mah mouth EVERY SINGLE LETTER…and ohhh yeah to who ever that’s hatin them for their list…That’s their taste….Why the fuck ya’ll beefin for..shit if I’m gonna be beefin’ some of ya’ll should take That “Get Rich Or Dye Tryin” down a couple of notches, or not off period…and if any Em’s album on the list They should’ve put “The Slim Shady LP” or “The Marshall Mathers LP” there not “The Eminem Show”,ohh don’t even think about “Encore” That was a disapointment, And his last one is more of a greatest hits so it don’t really count as an “original” album….to those that did show Clipse love for their list even though they have their own taste…good lookin for not hatin on it cuz i think is a good list too not to mention they put some old skool stuff in there. With that list it not just show what influence them,it also show they respect their HIP HOP roots, because without them you wouldn’t have your 50 cent,Em,or any of the artist we listen to right now…ooohhh yeah to homeboy that’s dissin’ on Kool G Rap,PE,and Rakim…man do your fuckin homework..they help build the foundation, and set the bars for all the Lyricist we have in HIP HOP today. I’m sorry for the long “essay” but I have to get some things off my chest, I would say more, but then I would take up the whole web page..hahahaha..and to Clipse good list, haven’t got the album yet but I’ma copped it real soon,..and to everybody else IT’S HIP HOP ALL DAY EVERYDAY NO MATTER WHERE IT’S FROM…KEEP REPPIN..

Yo… nowhere is there a mention of Pac. He was THE BEST rapper of all time. Nobody put out a classics like he did. Tell me who can rip it like on Dear Mama? Outlaw? I can name 60 more tracks on this level. Mama’s Just a Little Girl? Shoot. If you want an album, Makaveli: The Don Killuminati or Me Against the World, or All Eyes On Me. Those are all timeless classics. It seems they only gave the Westcoast 1 recognition, and that is the Chronic. All of his posthemeus albums have even been classics [minus the one Em dropped, cause Em just wasn't the fit producer for that type of material, minus a few tracks]. In any case, you guys are straight up hatin on the Westcoast.

I also feel that Lupe’s album shoulda been on that list, but its not as should have Commons last album. They did not sell 1 million, but thats cause of faggots downloadin his shit before it comes out.

Yo, I’m looking at some people’s lists of albums on here and just shaking my head. Me personally, that marshall mathers LP is a better album than the eminem show and I was always a little more partial to doggystyle over the chronic but that’s just splitting hairs.

However, REAL TALK, whoever said you coulda taken out Rae and The Infamous and put in any Pac album had to be in diapers in ‘95 or just straight up fuckin stupid. This very magazine did a feature on “Cocaine Rap” last month and didn’t even really give Cuban Linx… it’s due. That shit changed the whole fuckin culture. Pac as Makavelli… Big as Frank White… Nas Escobar (see Verbal Intercourse). The persona and concept for every record of the last ten years comes from that album. Say what ya’ll want in hindsight about Pac, but NOBODY has had more impact on this rap shit then them boys from Staten Island.

No group before them ever got solo deals as part of their contract.

Before Jay and Puff ever even thought of having their own clothing line, there was Wu-Wear. And not just in Macy’s or no shit like that, son. They had a whole fuckin store in New York. Brothers to this day are still rockin Clarks off of that shit.

All the ice rockin, pasta eatin, cosa nostra, gun totin alias shit was born of a that, and whether they know it or not, most of these cats are still trying to remake that album.

    Respect Power.

Everybody mad about Pac. Maybe they wasn’t influenced by Pac thats why he aint on there list. Im a Philly dude and im from the same era of the clipse age group which was the same era that most of there 10 was out 88-2001. In philly in the mid 90’s pac wasn’t our (my friends) influence. Not saying he aint great, but that wasn’t our flavor. Raekwon and Nas and Mobb and Big and Jay and Bootcamp was our outlet. Snoop and them killed it, Pac too, but when these dudes came out it was that east coast shit. They resembled us. East coast talk, life, and style. And you dickheads forget thats what the clipse are from. We wasn’t wearing flannel shirts and house shoes. We had tims, style flavor, polo, pelle pelle, fast life shit. So when these dudes came out and if your a hustlin dude they will be in your top 10. And pac named drop Jay and Mobb and them and yall think thats ill? He was a pupet them last years for Suge. He didn’t no none of them personally and yall think that was street? Big said thats Hustlin Backwards. Pac tried to fit in EVERYWHERE he went, including NY until them Brownsville BK niggas (real street niggas) did him dirty and he realized not to be down with just anybody. I like pac but I aint listen to that and then we stood on the corner or sit on the steps or at school like did you hear that Pac. Maybe where yall from, but we were quoting Big,Rae and Ghost, Jay, because that was us.And thru all the people I heard and all of them got a gift. JAY is the best of all time. Too much flow and style and his music is also timeless.

    Crazy H says:

BBron, Pac was from New York. Thats where he was born, and that where he was raised up to a certain point [hence the name "MC New York"], but as far as Jay being the GOAT, Im not so sure. You hear a song like song cry, and then you here a remix that Pac was never on to begin with using the exact same being with Pac’s lyrics just dropped on the beat, and your like “whoa… he killed it far more than Jay did, and that wasn’t the original beat. Hell, dude ain’t even alive and he still killed it further than Jay did” [this is bout the Better Dayz remix on the Green Lantern remix CD].

“He was a pupet them last years for Suge. He didn’t no none of them personally and yall think that was street? Big said thats Hustlin Backwards. Pac tried to fit in EVERYWHERE he went, including NY until them Brownsville BK niggas (real street niggas) did him dirty and he realized not to be down with just anybody.”

…. Umm, he mashed they ass cause they were trying to open their mouths on a topic they knew nothin about. About hustlin, shoot. Pac knew all about it. That’s why he sold over 6 mill in like one month. BIG only sold 1 million. Also, BIG never had to live the “real street life”. Even his mom said that in an interview. She said that a lot of his lyrics were based entirely off fiction, making me think that what Pac said about him [i.e.: BIG] takin Pac’s life in his songs. I ain’ tryna start nothin between BIGGIE and Pac fans. Just wanted to clarify some facts. I think that the two people/groups that should NOT be on the list are:

Mobb Deep, and Raekwon. I used to spin them back in the day, but come on. The only song you can bump of Mobb Deep till this day is “Shook Ones” and “Trife Life”.

Raekwon, “Rainy Dayz” and “Ice Water”.

When I think classic, I think of an album that has EVERY song that can be listened to, no matter what time period you in, like “All Eyes On Me” album, or the “Makaveli” album, or The Black Album, or both Illmatic and Stillmatic {Which I think is a very underated album}, etc. [I could repeat the rest of the list but don't wanna :)]. But too each his/her own opinion right? :)

    Take care y’all.

this is funny! guy, the clipse are just some artists that were asked to name 10 albums that they viewed as classics. not to mention there is two of them so you probably got five from pusha and five from malice. either way, everybody got they opinion. if you really wan to get into it you have to define what a classic album is. and it cna’t jusgt be off of record sale. because some albums I have sold millions but I can only stand about tree or four out of thirteen to fifteen songs. so sales don’t make a classic. I think it should be based on content, listening appeal and overall influence. honestly there are not that many artists or albums that can do that. the clipse do a good job of pointing some truly classic hip hop material. that’s it. people trippin’ because they some east coast cats so their choices are biased, of course they are. them and everybody else! grow up! most of you south people would choose scarface, outkast ludacris, TI & UGK; west coast people would choose Pac, snoop, dre, cube, game, i’s all the same! I’d like to see a hip hop committe formed and get together and do a non-biased rating for classic albums and give indetail reason behind each rating.

and just to show some of you youngsters how unbiased I am (a 30 something hip hop fanatic who’s been around to hear most of these albums) I’ll pick ten albums that I think are classic for the three reasons I stated before:(no order)

Public Enemy - “It Takes a Nation of Millions …”
Eric B. & Rakim “Paid in Full”
    Dr. Dre - “The Chronic”
    NWA - “Straight Outta Compton”
    Jay-Z - “The Black Album”
2Pac - “Me Against the World”
    Nas - “Stillmatic”
    Eminem -”The Marshall Mathers LP”
    OutKast - “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik”
    Wu-Tang - “Enter the 36 Chambers”
LL Cool J - “Bigger and Defer”

these are not my top 10 albums of all time, just ten joints that I know I can personally call classic because of their influence, listening appeal and content.

And there’s still more to name I’m just giving you a tip of the iceberg. first that fool Escobar obviously came down with Pac envy years ago.
Eminem dont belong on the list dummies. 50’s gay ass either. Jay’z new album? On everything I didnt even know it came out and dont know anybody who has it… And one time man I really couldnt say the top 10 album really but just use common sense lets say u mean best performing album. If All Eyez On Me is like one of the only double albums to go HOW MANY TIMEZ PlatiNUM??? REally though man check on it see how many times its platinum.A DOUBLE DISK. And I aint gonna lie I bought a Jay-z album but It wasnt one of the ones ya’ll talkin about. I was like 14 and one of the songs on there was MoneyCashHoesw/DMX. Are u fools retarded? Damn thats by far J’s best.Oh see BlueBluntz is smart. if u from the west you’ll pick pacdre and snoop,South, outkastluda and Face, east, b.i.g. nas and J. See now I’d pick mostly West cuz I know we the hottest and do it the cleanest. Stop hatin on us ya BITCH !!!hahahahha
And J makes songs 4 bytchez anyway so hes like an R+B album so dont compare him 2 Game man. It aint the same. And doubt we the cleanest? Check record sales on Pac, Snoop, Dre, and Game after a few more months 4 him. And DJ Quick + Too $hort were platinum in the 80’s. Yeah check on that. really though the west didnt start with Pac.
And J is really not the best from NY. It’s Nas or B.I.g. or somebody b4 my time. shit aint Puff the king there? think about it though he been doin it hella big for how long??? member that fool said ‘10 years from now/still b on top’ ?? he really wasnt lyin 2 ya’ll. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOh the point?? All Eyez On Me, double-disk, multimultimulti platinum. How could that not be in most of ya’lls top 10? what ya’ll really need 2 do is stop hatin on the Golden State.thats it.

    The Truth says:

Why is everyone hatin on the Clipse list? It’s their own personal opinion, although I do feel like The 7 day theory is one of the greatest albums of all time, I’m glad an artist shows enough class not to ride Pac just because he’s dead. The Clipse released a sure classic and aside from the vets of the game like Jay, Nas, Styles P (SUPPORT TIME IS MONEY!!), Jadakiss, and Eminem, they are the best rappers out. C’mon folks were talkin about hip-hop here, artistry over sales, in this day of big business we forgot what we are about. The best albums of ‘06 were realesed this month, Styles-Time Is Money , Nas- Hip Hop is Dead, Jay-Z - Kingdom Come (a classic he’s still got it), and The Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury, this is hip hop not pop, Lyrics over spins, get your minds right.

I like their choices which are on point and I also agree with BBRON with the Shining being another option. These were definitely the finer times of Rap within Hip Hop where lyrics were essential and part of the game. We getting back to it with vets like Ghost, Sean P and others carrying the torch!
