Millions of God fearing Muslims, as Islam prescribes, practice moderation. Extremism is un-Islamic. Suicide bombing is also against our religion. The tiny percentage who harm or kill innocent people and call themselves Muslims have high jacked our religion and have succeeded in getting 100% of the US news coverage. There is no balance with the media, Very rarely are we, the millions of Muslims of all colors, races, cultures, etc. shown for our positive contributions.

Hip Hop, the culture, with Afrika Bambaataa as its world ambassador, was always open to everyone of all colors, genders, races, cultures, religions - giving it worldwide appeal. Islam has worldwide appeal because anyone can become a Muslim - it is open to all colors, genders, races and cultures.

Muslims have always been in Hip Hop. When emcees included Islamic themes or words in their rhymes in the 80s and early 90s, it was not out of the ordinary and fans sang along whether they were Muslim or not. No one segregated the Muslim rappers into the “religious rap” section at stores.

I can’t speak for what the rap industry has become but I don’t appreciate the misogyny, materialism, sexism, glorification of criminal behavior, racial slurs and explicit content etc. that I hear. If Lupe is rhyming about some different themes and anything positive, and gaining fame…Good for him! Good for us! Good for the industry! Rap was so much better when everyone had their own unique sound, style, flavor and message. There was room for everyone and at least the negative was balanced out by the positive. Conscious emcees becoming the chart toppers will , of course, be a threat to individuals and companies who have benefitted financially off of promoting social ills and vices.

If there was any violence over the past 1400 years, it was against Muslims. Study the accurate history of the creation of Israel. The Prophet Muhammad (May Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him-PBUH) said that “the pen of a scholar is worth a thousand times more than the blood of a martyr,” and “killing one innocent human being is like killing all of humanity.” He preached the same teachings of peace and humanity as Jesus (PBUH) and Moses (PBUH). Karen Armstrong, who said “if Christianity is a religion of peace, then surely Islam is a religion of social justice.” Racism is not tolerated and should not be tolerated in any society anywhere in the world. Similarly, the respect one should have for people of faith should be as important if not more. Religion is an identity and comparing all Muslims to terrorist is the same as comparing all Caucasians or Christians to the KKK. Finally, I may not know Lupe Fiasco nor may ever meet him; however I feel the right to defend him and my faith because he is a brother in Islam, and that is our identity.
