Not even Weezer front man Rivers Cuomo can stop Asher Roth’s quest for hip-hop stardom. After his debut single “I Love College” leaked to the Internet some months back, Roth ran into clearance issues with Cuomo.
According to inside sources, the song which borrows from Weezer’s 1994 hit “Say It Ain’t So,” seemed to have struck a chord with Cuomo who refused to clear the sample even after Asher offered the rock star 100% of the record’s publishing. “Asher offered Rivers all of the publishing and he still wouldn’t clear the sample,” said a source from Asher’s camp, who spoke under the condition of anonymity.
Rather than abandon the record, which has gained a healthy following since it’s initial leak, Roth debuted a remixed version of “I Love College,” on his Myspace page yesterday. Asher is reportedly “thrilled” with the new version of the single, as it still maintains the feel of the original recording and is planning to shoot a video in the coming weeks. – Rob Markman

DJ Knox says:
Oh,if only it were that easy “refried”. When ur in the zone and sampling songs to make new music, and the beat’s thumping, the last thing on ur mind in the smoke-filled studio is, “Oh shit, we gotta call the sample clearance agent, son!!” Not happening, even tho, rock artists are known assholes to rappers. Paul McCartney, anyone?

Rock artists are known assholes to rappers because rappers can’t even create their own shitty music without stealing it from somebody else first.

You may want to leave those last parts out.

The Doctor says:
“Say It Ain’t So” seems to be about the fear of alcohol while “I Love College” glorifies it. Google some lyrics and compare the two. A lil’ homework never killed no one.
Rivers ain’t a hater; just passionate to his work.

The Nurse says:
I agree with the Doctor.
More importantly, Say It AIn’t So is a very personal song and the lyrics clearly indicate that as much about how a random bottle of Heineken in his icebox triggered memories of Rivers’ father’s alcoholic and abusive past “Dear Daddy, I write you, in spite of year’s of silence/This bottle of Stephen’s, awakens ancient feelings” so no wonder Rivers refused to clear sampling of his song to Asher Roth, who glorified alcohol abuse.
